SMILES!
Smiles seem to be breaking out again over at the Westbourne stadium. It's amazing what a couple of wins can do to everybodies confidence.

Neil Cugley has recently addded some important names to his squad; Steve Norman, Kevin Watson, Paul Sykes and Andy Burke. At the very least this should ensure our survival in the Ryman Premier, unfortunately the only cup competitions we remain in are the Kent Senior Cup and the Ryman league cup.

Important Message from Clive of Westbourne

This year we have a Grand Xmas Draw for the first time. The income from the Supporters Club is steady during the season with a big boost at the end with Boot Fairs and Easter Draw.

This year at the AGM we decided to boost the playing budget with extra fund raising. We have put 1000 in so far and this has really helped with extra players to cover injuries.

Every pound profit will go to the playing budget.

So every ticket you sell really helps. If you cant sell tickets donate a prize all gifts will be used.

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU

Clive. (FISC)

Invicta 3 (2)-(0) 0 Kingstonian
Invicta manager Neil Cugley, celebrated his birthday with a win and a fine display from his latest scratch team. He was deprived the use of Lindsey (suspension), Chapman and Lamb (injuries) but was able to introduce latest signing, experienced defender Steve Norman who was very solid on the left side of defence.

First blood to top scorer Jim Dryden as he lobbed the keeper in the 38th minute, Jim was then concussed after banging heads with someone and didn't come back on until the 2nd half..

Paul Sykes was showing what a class act he is and volleyed past the despairing keeper in the 43rd minute for his first ever goal for Invicta. After 5 minutes of injury time. HT 2-0.

The second half saw the game open up a bit, the first half had realised only two or three shots on target, and Munday capped a fine diplay with Invicta's 3rd goal in the 79th.

A well deserved 3 points for Invicta and hopefully a change in the clubs fortunes.

RM's report will not be available until Tuesday.

INVICTA: Kessell, Watson, Sykes, Flanagan, Guest, Norman, Everitt M, Munday, Dryden, Burke, Glover. SUBS: Coleman, Everitt J, Nielson, Walker, Morrin.
KINGSTONIANS: Zawadski, Sanders, Alimi, Taylor, Rifat, Coke, Collyer, Ahmad, Ruggles, Rose, Timothy. SUBS: Coke, Williams, Tchankou, Muscat, Hughes.

RECENT ARRIVALS
The arrivals lounge at the Westbourne has been busy of late. Most recent arrival is striker Paul Sykes aged 28 from Dartford and several Kent clubs prior to that. Paul was cup-tied for the Trophy so he will be added to the squad on Saturday when high flying Cheshunt are the visitors.

Kevin Watson joins us from Welling Utd. A right sided defender he appeared against us in Chelmsford colours in August. A former Charlton schoolboy, youth and reserve team defender, he enjoyed three good seasons with Team Bath, scoring 20 goals when they won the Screwfix Direct Western League Premier Division in 2002/03. He has been capped for both the England Students and British Universities teams.

Attacking midfielder Luke Gedling has joined us from Worthing. A former Southampton youth team player, he originally progressed from Worthing's reserves to the first team before moving to Lewes. He played in the Conference with Gravesend and Aldershot. He signed for Horsham in September before re-joining Worthing.

Recent signing Andrew Burke has impressed Neil Cugley, his fitness has improved, he was out of the game for a couple of seasons, and he is now scoring goals, one in each of the games against Cray Wanderers. Cugs really feels that the former Spurs youngster could be an important signing for the club.

NEXT FIXTURES
Invicta have Ryman Premier games at the Westbourne for the next two Saturdays, Cheshunt (13/11) and Kingstonian (20/11). Adam Flanagan and Simon Glover should both be available for selection but Martin Chandlers knee injury will keep him out of action until the specialist advises otherwise.

OCTOBER PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Paul Lamb who has been chosen as the FJ Fullick & Co Player of the Month for October.

Friday October 31, 2004

Word has it that Neil Cugley, after meeting with the board, has been given permission to strengthen his squad.

At least we can be grateful that some of the problems are being addressed early in the season so we have the time to reach a position of safety in our new league.

However throwing money at a problem will not always save the day, we have to take a long hard look at ourselves and learn lessons from past mistakes.

Why not attend the Shareholders meeting on Monday 7.30pm (Stripes), find out what's happening at the Westbourne stadium and see if you can help the club establish itself in the Ryman Premier Division.

NEW LOOK INVICTA
Neil Cugleys decision to move Mark Munday into the forward line to add a more physical presence to the side paid off with an equaliser goal, a draw and an improved performance from the team. Drew Watkins played his last game for the club and is likely to reappear in Cray Wanderers strip soon (but not against Invicta in the Trophy). New boy Andy Burke is getting better with each game and looks as if he is going to be an important player for the future of Invicta.

Lets hope we can now move on and get a few wins under our belts, the Ryman league seems to be anybodies for the taking this year and our position of 15th doesn't truely reflect some of our performances. We have been in charge of games for long periods but just failed to score the all important goals.

Come along to the Westbourne on Saturday, breathe in some fresh air and encourage the team.

AN INTERVIEW WITH SANJAY
I have just completed the fourth of my celebrity interviews with an Invicta Fan. This time it is Jurno / Supporters Club stalwart Mick Cork. I caught up with Corky on the bus on the way back from Raynes Park.

Favourite other team: West Brom

First Folkestone game: Folkestone Town v Dartford - c1953 (we won 4-0)

Best ever game: Difficult - Woking 8 Invicta 4 takes some beating, though the atmosphere and everything else about the home game when we drew 3-3 with Tamworth was quite brilliant.

For the old club it would have to be Dover 0 Folkestone 1 (FA Cup, October 14, 1989 - my wedding anniversary, that's how I remember).

The cup tie when won 1-0 with seven men at Redhill was memorable too.

Worst game: That dreadful league cup defeat at Dover last season. Come to think of it, any time we lose to Dover is a nightmare

Favourite Player: Whoever scores our next goal!!! Seriously, and this is hard, probably Frank Ovard and Nicky Dent when they were at their best.

About you

Age: 58 Ill soon get in for half price!

Job: Sports Editor, Folkestone Herald (and Dover Express)

Food: I enjoy a good fry up now again - eggs, bacon, fried bread, mushroom, tomato.......

Drink: You know I do! Real Ale mostly - Old Speckled Hen when I can find it

Hobby: Watching Folkestone Invicta

Music: Very broad tastes, hard to say what's my favourite these days. Anthing from Blondie, to ZZ Top, some Rod Stewart, some old rock n'roll (particularly Eddie Cochran), Booker T (Green Onions etc), Tim Hardin (Reason to Believe), Lynyrd Skynrd (Down Home Alabama etc) - really anything that's good of its kind.

What about your own football career? Wonderful left foot. Good pace over ten yards if there was a beer at the end of it. Once burst a mate's blood vessel when we were having a kick about on the sands - and he was due to play in a big game a couple of weeks later. Perhaps my worst tackle. I've always managed to be mates with those a lot better at sport than I am, most of whom went on to to play for Folkestone at whatever game it was.

Being called Sanjay? Strange that a few fans always get us confused you work for The Hythe Courier our rival paper. We just have the same views.

Touchliner? Coming back soon!

Tell me the Chippenham story. Now that is one to forget thrown out twice in one game I was also almost booked at Cambridge City!

Ever thought about writing a book ? Still trying to peruade Cugs to do one which I'll 'ghost'.

Holidays? Only having a couple of days in London with the missus this year.

Hopes for the future: That Folkestone Invicta win a lot more games than they lose and get onto as sound a financial footing as possible.

Many thanks Corky have a good one. Gita and I look forward to having you over for dinner again soon

Sanjay.

FINAL SCORE

Folkestone Invicta 2-2 Braintree Town
Invicta welcomed back keeper Tony Kessells into their ranks, albeit on the bench as backup. He is training and will hopefully be fit enough for a full return to the action on Saturday 16th Oct at Northwood. The club is very grateful to Mo Munden for providing instant cover at the drop of a hat.
Luke Colemans father (Asst Manager at Lewes) persuaded Neil to take a closer look at Andy Burke and he played all but the last 5 minutes when he was replaced by Luke Coleman.
Jim Dryden shot Invicta into the lead in the 25th minute connecting with Invctas first corner kick. The visitors were unable to take full advantage of a strong wind at their backs but by the interval Louis Riddle had levelled the score. HT 1-1.

Five minutes into the 2nd half Mark Jones put Braintree into the lead, however he was to take an early bath (67min) when referee Andy Legg lost patience with him (foul and abusive language).
Correction: Mark Jones was sent off near the end of the first half (43 mins) and Braintrees 2nd goal was scored by Burgess in the 67th minute ... Dave (Ed)
From hereon the 10 men were in control and threatened to increase the lead until Jim Dryden popped up with Invictas and his 2nd goal in the 90th minute.

Neil Cugley was becoming quite animated towards the end of the game, his frustration at his mens inability to pass the ball quite evident. Invicta will clearly have to improve on the basics, keep the ball on the deck, pass and move. The present failings are less about finance, and more about skill and tactics. If we are to win some games we are going to have to put in some hard work on the training ground.

This really was 2 points lost by Braintree and one point snatched by Invicta.

INVICTA: Munden, Watkins, Lamb, Flanagan, Guest, Lindsey (Chandler), Burke (Chandler), Munday (Walker), Dryden, Everitt, Glover. SNU: Dyson, Kessell
BRAINTREE: Gay, Burgess, Jones (SO), Adedeji, Lorraine, Quinton Martin), McGowan, Good, Avans, Barker, Riddle. Other Subs: Porter, Sodje, Abbott, Maynard.

A SLOUGH OF DESPOND ... not for long surely
Since our early exit from the FA Cup against an improving Ryman Premier side the Cheriton Road terraces seem to have slipped into a "Slough of Despond".

We can take the view that our season is finished and get engulfed in the mire (just going thru the motions as it were!) OR we can pull ourselve up by our boot straps and aim for the higher things.

It could be argued that we have carelessly let 10K slip through our fingers but nobody has a God-given right to win all football games.

The season is still young, 31 league games to be played and only a couple of wins adrift from the league leaders. Perhaps a slice more luck in the FA Trophy will come our way, and there is always the Kent Senior Cup.

We have many of the ingredients for success, a determined management and experienced squad, some very talented youngsters in the wings, and greater than ever cooperation between the board and the supporters club . The one ingredient in short supply is money but we will have to make do with what we've got and hope that the plans for a regenerated Folkestone will have positive spins offs for the club. Lets face it a positive attitude all round benefits everyone.

Folkestone Invicta 1-1 Harrow Borough
RM Oct 5, 2004 Attendance: 315 Folkestone Invicta suffered penalty shoot out heartache for the second successive season as they went out of the F. A. Cup on sudden death in Tuesday night's 2nd Qualifying Round replay against Harrow Borough.

With an inviting 3rd Qualifying Round at home to Flackwell Heath the prize for the winners, this was a costly defeat for Invicta both in financial terms and potentially for the momentum of their season.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN!
Invicta return to FA Cup action this weekend in the shape of a 2nd Qualifying round tie away to Ryman Premier side Harow Boro. Neil Cugley, his management team and the squad are anxious to make up for the disappointing failures at Harrow at the end of September (Invicta lost 1-0) .

Neil should have a full squad to pick from, Mo Munden will continue in goal, John Guest returns from his one match suspension. John Walker and sixteen year old Luke Coleman will almost certainly make important contributions. Lets hope that we are in the hat for the 3rd qualifying round, (matches played Oct 16th) and that it's a home tie. If a replay is required it will be at the Westbourne on Tuesday night (Oct 5).

THE SUNDAY PAPERS
Luke Coleman (16), has not only written himself into the FA Cup record books and Invicta's records with his two goal appearance at Raynes Park Vale on Saturday 18th Sep., he has also appeared on the back page of this weekends national NLP (Non-league Paper) pictured with his proud dad Jimmy under the headline "Record-boy Luke gunning for his dad".

Schoolboy striker Luke Coleman shot himself into the Folkestone Invicta and FA Cup record books last week to keep alive his dream of a ding-dong date with his dad ... aged 16 years and 49 days when he came off the bench to score twice during he Ryman Premier club's 6-0 first qualifying round demolition of Raynes Park Vale.

It gave the A-level student his own spot in history as the youngest player to score in the Cup for the Kent club - and the youngest known player to have bagged a pair in the competition nationally, according to FA statistician David Barber.

... level-headed Coleman continued his form with two for the youth team 24 hours later and another pair for his school on Wednesday, is eyeing a match-up with Conference South Lewes where dad Jimmy is assistant- manager ...

"We've got Harrow Borough away in the next round and that will be tough," said Coleman. "We've got a really good side so hopefully we can get thru and stay in the draw to get Lewes perhaps ... my dad is a conditioning coach and has helped me so much in the last couple of years, but it would provide a bit of family rivalry."

US News - ANOTHER VITAL JOHN AYLING GOAL
Penmen Rally For OT Win Over Bryant

MANCHESTER, N.H. (Sept. 15, 2004) Graduate student John Ayling's (Kent, England) golden goal 2:37 into the second overtime lifted the Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Bryant University today at Dr. George J. Larkin Field on the SNHU campus.

Sophomore David McGuire (Glasgow, Scotland) set up the game winner, as he sent a pass to Ayling on the left flank after eluding several defenders in the midfield. Ayling's blast from 25 yards out deflected off the hands of Bryant goalkeeper Alex Bissias (Harpswell, ME) and just inside the far goalpost. It marked the first action of the year for Ayling, who was delayed in coming over from England.

Mo Munden

YOUNG MO BACK FOR VITAL FIXTURES
Crowd favourite, 40 years young Maurice (Mo) Munden, has agreed to turn out for his old team-mate Neil Cugley now that keeper Tony Kessell is sidelined for three weeks with ligament damage to his collarbone. Invicta have some very important games comimg up , Saturday we travel to Eastleigh (always a tough league fixture) and the following Saturday (Oct 2) we have been drawn away to Harrow Borough in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying round with a possible replay on Tuesday 5th.

Squad news is that Scott Lindsey has still not fully recovered from the rib injury but Cugs is hoping he will be fit enough to face Eastleigh as John Guest will be missing from the defence (one match suspension due to accumulation of bookings). Cugs will be relying on some of the young men who have forced their way into the squad this season, namely Walker and Coleman.

Oct 02 - FAC2Q Harrow Boro v Invicta 3pm KO

Invicta have now got an early opportunity to gain some revenge over Harrow Borough for the away defeat they suffered on August Bank Holiday weekend. Goalkeeper Tony Kessell was missing from the lineup that day (serving one match suspension) and will probably be missing again (dislocated collar-bone) and four days before we had put in our best performance when we travelled to Leyton and scored four goals. It will require the Leyton type performance if we are to emulate last seasons FA Cup run. It seems that we are destined to play our cup games away from home, never mind we'll just have to roll our sleeves up and keep on winning away from home.

THE ROAD TO CARDIFF - well we can dream can't we!

Neil Cugley is very upbeat about tomorrows FAC 1st Qualifying round tie up at Raynes Park Vale and is confident that we can do well.

Skipper Scott Lindsey didn't train yesterday but Cugs expects him to be in the starting line-up tomorrow afternoon. Everybody is raring to go and will want to start this game. On-loan Ian Pulman is cup-tied by Margate so won't be available. John Guest will miss the next game as a result of his penalty points so lets hope that we don't have to replay on Tuesday night! We started last years cup run at Raynes Park last year (2-0 victory), a friendly club but not too keen on our drummer boy.

SPONSORS WANTED for Testimonial
The next scheduled home game is the Neil Cugley/Dennis Hunt Testimonial against a Gills first team on Thursday Oct 7th (Admission 5 (3 concessions). Neil and Dennis have both made massive contributions to the club as players/managers over the years and now we need to thank them, so if you can offer some sponsorship please call Neil on 07770 558 578.

FINAL SCORE
Folkesone Invicta 3-0 Wealdstone
This match was played in memory of Allan Simmonds, a disabled man who was a lifelong supporter and still managed to get to almost every home and away match. He would certainly hae enjoyed the way we started the game. A goal up through Glover in the 13th minute, then a brace from Everitt in the 33rd and 37th minutes meant the game was effectively won by half time. The balance of the side was disturbed by Scott Lindsey's departure at half-time, Mark Munday missing due to work commitments. No further goals. Pulman and Wolf lost their tempers and were red carded where a yellows each would have sufficed. FT 3-0.
INVICTA: Kessell, Watkins, Lamb, Flanagan, Guest, Lindsey (Pulman), Chandler, Everitt, Dryden, Walker (Spearpoint), Glover (Coleman). SNU Dyson, Morrin.

ALLAN SIMMONDS

Our players will be wearing black armbands today in memory of Allan Simmonds who sadly passed away on Monday.

For those of you who didn't know Allan by name, he was the chap in the wheelchair who would defy all the odds and somehow get to all of our away games (by rail and taxi) and who helped out selling admission tickets to the Wilf Armory Stand on matchdays.

A former "Supporter of the Year" in 2001/2, he was justifiably proud of the large number of raffle tickets he sold for the supporters club. His enthusiasm for all things Invicta will be sadly missed. Funeral arrangements are not yet known.

Mon 06 Sep 2004 Premier Division
Chelmsford City 0-1 Hendon
Kingstonian 0-0 Dover Athletic.

Folkestone Invicta (1) 2-0 (0) Tonbridge Angels
Att: 445
Hugely enjoyable match, the Invicta defence made short work of Tonbridges attacks, and the Angels defence got more and more petulent as the game went on and the referee had little option but to hand out a few yellow cards to the visitors.
Glover swept in the first goal in the 18th and Flanagan headed in the corner in the 54th minute.
The only disappointment was that we didn't score more goals and that there were only 445 kent souls to witness this victory. I thought this fixture was going to be a local derby!

INJURIES BITE INTO SQUAD
Skipper Scott Lindsey joined the ever lengthening injury list when he turned his ankle last Saturday on the meadow that passes for a pitch at Harrow Boro. It was a poor game by all accounts and nobody came through the game with much credit, inconsistency has been a real problem so far this season. Manager Neil Cugley is hoping that his coach will be able to return to the fray for Tuesday nights game at the Westbourne when Tonbridge Angels are the visitors.

Simon Glover and John Ayling both went into the Bank Holiday monday match with Windsor & Eton carrying injuries. This was to be a much more spirited performance and we more or less matched our opponents who look like being one of the high flyers in the Isthmian. This was definately going to be Johns last hurrah as he flies to the USA tomorrow (Friday), thanks for everything John and good luck with your studies.

There is further pressure being exerted on the Invicta squad in the shape of Mark Munday's absence due to work commitments on Saturday Sept 11th when Wealdstone are the visitors to the Westbourne Stadium.

The early season cuts in the squad coupled with injuries have put Neil into difficulties selecting teams and often the team has picked itself, those left standing are in the team. Neil will be trying to persuade his board to allow the purse strings to be stretched to enable him to bring in some cover, always assuming the players are available.
