Folkestone Invicta made it six Ryman League Division One South wins out of six during December with a 4-2 victory over Corinthian-Casuals at the Buzzlines Stadium on New Year’s Eve.

Neil Cugley’s side has scored 17 goals in their four home matches during that run and again gave their supporters plenty to cheer in their first outing since their astonishing 8-0 Boxing Day derby win over Hythe Town.

Invicta kept the same starting line up from Boxing Day but had to wait until the second half before taking control as they found Corinthian-Casuals to be stubborn opponents during the first half.

In the opening exchanges, visiting captain Wayne Finnie headed at Invicta goalkeeper Jack Delo when Danny Green sent the game’s first corner of the game over from the left hand side.

There were chances at both ends in the sixth minute as Casuals goalkeeper Matt Mann held a looping Frankie Chappell header after a Josh Burchell free kick and Delo denied Joel Thompson when the striker dribbled inside the box after the Invicta goalkeeper had smothered a Steve Barilli shot.

A seventh minute Finnie header then caused more problems inside the Invicta penalty area after another Green corner on the left.

But it was Invicta who opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Darren Marsden found Liam Dickson in space on the left hand side and captain Darren SMITH volleyed in the latter’s subsequent cross from close range.

The lead was not to last for long though as Saheed SANKOH made it 1-1 in the 16th minute when he slid in at the far post to meet Matt Ellis’ free kick from the right after Chappell had been penalised.

The visitors could have gone ahead in the 28th minute but Gavin Quintyne fired wide with a clear chance on the right hand side of the penalty area when Sankoh played him through in a move started by Jamel Carr.

Thompson then put the ball wide after a 30th minute Green free kick on the left.

At the other end, a 35th minute Burchell cross was allowed to reach Roland Edge in the middle of the penalty area but the Invicta player-coach’s shot was blocked.

Chappell had to block from Quintyne in the 43rd minute when Thompson eventually crossed from the right when Sankoh and Green played him through.

Invicta restored their lead in the 48th minute courtesy of a Stuart KING penalty after the striker himself had been impeded by Finnie.

It was the prolific striker’s seventh goal in Invicta’s last three home matches and his 15th goal in 13 starts for the Folkestone side.

Delo saved from Barilli at the expense of a corner in the 58th minute when Sankoh dispossessed Josh Vincent down the left hand side.

But Invicta increased their lead in the 61st minute when BURCHELL drilled a low shot in from 20 yards when a Marsden ball just evaded Quintyne in a move also involving Smith and James Everitt.

An Everitt shot on the turn was then touched round the post by goalkeeper Matt Mann after an Edge ball a minute later.

Chappell blocked a 75th minute shot from visiting substitute Ross Defoe after a good run from Sankoh.

But Invicta were now in control and Mann had to touch over an inventive strike from Smith two minutes later.

And the home side made it 4-1 in the 77th minute when James EVERITT was credited with the goal as the ball went in via a defender in a crowded goal mouth after a Burchell corner on the right.

It took Everitt’s tally to six goals in the last five matches and to 19 for the season so far, but he then reverted to right back when striker Richard Atkins replaced Vincent.

With the game entering its closing stages, SANKOH scored his second goal of the game in the 89th minute when he converted from the penalty spot after substitute Micheal Everitt had pulled down Barilli.

Everitt was booked in the process to join the visitors’ Scott Hassell and Defoe in referee Adrian Oldershaw’s notebook.
