Folkestone Invicta suffered a heavy defeat away to Ryman League Division One South leaders Dulwich Hamlet at the Champion Hill Stadium on Tuesday night despite taking the lead through Josh Burchell.
Two goals in a three-minute spell from Sanchez Ming around the half hour mark put the home side 2-1 up at halftime and two goals in four minutes from centre forward Ishmail Kamara early in the second half put Dulwich firmly in control.
Invicta pulled a late goal back from a Darren Smith penalty, but Dulwich struck again through Andre Costa deep into stoppage time.
The Folkestone side opened the scoring in bizarre circumstances in the 14th minute. Home goalkeeper James Tedder came out to meet Smith’s ball over the defence but found himself outside his penalty area and slipped when attempting to head the ball away to allow a BURCHELL touch to roll into the empty net.
Tedder grabbed Burchell’s leg as he attempted to recover and had the ball not gone in then the home goalkeeper would have been facing a red card.
MING equalised in the 31st minute when he hit a well-struck shot into the net from the right hand side of the penalty area when Kamara broke after Invicta captain Micheal Everitt had lost possession following an Invicta throw in deep inside the Dulwich half.
It was MING who soon put the home side 2-1 ahead in the 33rd minute when his shot from the left hand side of the penalty area went into the roof of the net off Invicta goalkeeper Jack Delo after a ball from Ethan Pinnock.
KAMARA made it 3-1 in the 53rd minute when he converted in the middle of the penalty area after a Costa cross from the left.
And KAMARA struck again in the 56th minute when a Josh Vincent attempted clearance cannoned off fellow defender Frankie Chappell into the striker’s path and he duly scored from close range.
SMITH pulled a goal back with a 90th minute penalty after goalkeeper Tedder clattered into James Everitt after Burchell had played a high ball into the penalty area.
But COSTA made it 5-2 when he drilled the ball in off Delo from the right hand side of the penalty area after Costa himself had played the ball out to substitute Frankie Sawyer on the left hand side.
The main concern for Invicta at the moment is the amount of goals that they are leaking. Their last six matches in all competitions have produced 36 goals – 16 for and 20 against.
The Folkestone side’s goal difference of 32-24 after 17 matches so far this season is in stark contrast to their incredible promotion-winning season of 2009-10 when Invicta scored 54 and conceded a meagre 23 goals in their entire 42-match league campaign.
Invicta made one change to their starting elven as Simon Austin came in for Richard Atkins in attack.
A tenth minute shot from Dulwich’s Peter Adeniyi down the left hand side of the penalty area was cleared for a corner at the far post by Invicta central defender Liam Friend.
And Invicta were soon gifted their opening goal.
The visitors went forward again in the 19th minute when an Austin shot was blocked by a defender after the striker had turned inside the penalty area and Smith blasted the follow up over the crossbar from outside the penalty area.
But the game turned with Ming’s two quick goals.
Kamara then made room for himself in the 35th minute but his shot from the edge of the penalty area was comfortably saved by Delo.
A Costa shot was then blocked by Vincent a minute later as the home side stepped up the pressure.
And Delo did well to save in the 38th minute when Dean Carpenter and Adeniyi combined to find Kalvin Morath-Gibbs in the clear on the right hand side of the penalty area.
Smith ran through the middle for Invicta in the 54th minute but could not get enough power on his shot either side of the two Kamara goals that put distance on the scoreline.
Pinnock tried to pick his spot from the edge of the penalty area in the 65th minute but shot over the crossbar after a Costa ball down the left.
For Invicta, substitute Atkins shot high and wide three minutes later when a Roland Edge through ball sent him clear in a move also involving striker Everitt.
There were chances at both ends in the 77th minute as a Kamara shot rolled against the far post when Morath-Gibbs and Costa combined down the left hand side and Edge headed at Tedder after a ball to the far post from the right hand side.
Invicta were awarded their late penalty when Tedder was booked after himself receiving treatment when he clattered into Everitt.
Junior Kadi had earlier been booked for a 21st minute challenge on Liam Dickson as the Invicta left back surged forward.
But Costa completed the scoring for Dulwich and Invicta barely had time to kick off again before the final whistle.
