Folkestone Invicta’s first away Ryman League Division One South game of the season ended in a disappointing 3-1 defeat way to Corinthian-Casuals on Tuesday night.
Glenn Boosey opened the scoring for the home side just after half time and then two goals in a three-minute spell in the final quarter of the game left Invicta 3-0 down.
New striker Stuart King pulled goal back and then hit the post right on the final whistle but there was to be no way back for Neil Cugley’s side.
The home side had earlier missed a penalty during the first half at King Georges Field.
Invicta went into the game with Roland Edge and Paul Jones back in the side in place of Liam Dickson (work commitments) and Ryan Moreby, with James Everitt starting the game in midfield.
Home centre forward Joel Thompson shot tamely wide in the sixth minute when he made space for himself after good work by Darren Chalke.
At the other end, King broke down the left hand side of the penalty area and forced the game’s first corner from goalkeeper Matt Mann and an Edge cross from the left led to a scramble inside the home penalty area that resulted in Mann saving from James Everitt.
A 23rd minute Boosey shot was deflected for a corner after a move also involving Tommy Williams and Jamal Carr down the right and another Boosey shot flashed wide of the Invicta far post two minutes later.
King chipped at Mann in the 28th minute when James Everitt played him through after Luke Blewden had won the ball.
But the home side then had the chance to open the scoring when Liam Friend brought Thompson down after the Invicta central defender did not get enough on his attempted header back to goalkeeper Jack Delo.
Fellow centre half Frankie Chappell was booked for kicking the ball away as he claimed that the foul had taken place outside the penalty area, but Invicta were given a reprieve when Kane Sergeant put his 34th minute penalty over the crossbar.
Sergeant shot over from just outside the penalty area in the 45th minute after combining with Carr when a Josh Vincent ball was intercepted and the home midfielder was to make his mark during the second half.
The home side broke the deadlock in the 48th minute when BOOSEY shot past Delo and inside the post after Carr had pulled the ball back from the right hand side.
Striker Jones was then fouled right on the left hand edge of the home penalty area two minutes later and King’s free kick was deflected for a corner.
Edge shot just wide after combining with strikers King and Jones down the left hand side of the penalty area in the 57th minute and King was just wide with an overhead kick three minutes later after a Jones shot had been charged down.
Delo got down to save in the 63rd minute when Carr pulled the ball back to Boosey again, this time from the left hand side of the box.
Matt Hollyoak blocked in the 68th minute when Thompson pulled the ball back to Boosey after bundling over Friend.
A Moreby shot was blocked by Williams at the other end a minute later when the Invicta substitute combined with King.
James Everitt then headed just wide at the far post when Jones curled the ball across.
But Corinthian-Casuals increased their lead in the 74th minute when BOOSEY was credited with the final touch in the middle after Sergeant had sent the ball in from the right hand side when Chalke played the ball out wide from the heart of the defence.
Invicta responded by giving a first senior outing to substitute Richard Atkins in place of Vincent.
It was soon 3-0, though, when goalkeeper Mann threw the ball out wide to Sergeant on the right and he took the ball on before curling an absolute beauty into the far corner of the net in the 76th minute.
Invicta made an immediate response as KING made it two goals in two games with the club as he placed a good finish into the corner of the net after a 79th minute after combining with Atkins.
Atkins himself headed over when Edge crossed from the left in the 87th minute after Jones had pulled the ball back.
And King hit a 25-yard strike against the post deep into stoppage time.
But Invicta had left themselves with too much to do.
The Folkestone club had not conceded three goals in a Division One South fixture throughout their promotion-winning season of 2009-10.
