Folkestone Invicta went out of The Alan Boon (Ryman League) Cup when they conceded two late goals in Wednesday night’s Third Round tie at Ryman Premier League club Lewes.

Josh Burchell had brought Invicta level to make it 1-1 in the 80th minute, but substitute Michael Malcolm restored Lewes’ lead in the 86th minute and Nic Ciardini increased the home side’s lead during stoppage time.

Striker Paul Booth had given the former Conference club a first half lead.

On their first senior visit to The Dripping Pan, Invicta brought striker Richard Atkins back into the starting line up in place of Roland Edge, with Simon Austin occupying the deeper midfield role he had finished Saturday’s when he scored twice against Bognor.

Invicta made a positive start as Atkins played a ball in from the left beyond James Everitt at the far post in a move also involving Ryan Moreby and Atkins and the ball carried to Lewes goalkeeper Fabian Spiess after striker Everitt got in behind the home defence after a Darren Smith ball.

Lewes’ Italian-born Christian Nanetti cut in from the right in the 17th minute and won the game’s first corner when Liam Friend blocked his shot.

And Frankie Chappell intercepted an attempted ball in to striker Bayan Fenwick when Jamie Cade played the ball to Nanetti down the right a minute later.

Smith played another ball forward in the 21st minute to send Micheal Everitt away but the ball over-ran slightly and the Invicta captain collided with Spiess, the Lewes goalkeeper on work experience from Notts County.

At the other end, a Max Howell shot deflected at Delo when Matt Somner played the ball up to Cade on the left.

And BOOTH opened the scoring in the 35th minute when he hit a well-struck shot across goal into the far corner of the net from the right hand side of the penalty area after Nanetti had run down the middle when Invicta lost possession in midfield.

Howell then cut in from the left and shot at Delo as Lewes used both flanks.

For Invicta, striker Everitt headed a 39th minute Moreby cross from the left wide in a move also involving Atkins and Josh Vincent cut in from the right and hit a high shot into the side netting during first half stoppage time.

Burchell headed away a far post Fenwck shot in the 47th minute after a Nanetti corner on the right.

But Invicta were playing well and Moreby shot against the post and out for a goal kick a minute later when a Vincent cross from the right found him in a move also involving striker Everitt and Smith.

Moreby then won Invicta’s first corner of the night when his shot deflected and Moreby shot just wide when Smith’s subsequent corner on the left fell to him.

Howell cut in from the left hand side and shot over in the 51st minute after a crossfield ball from Nanetti on the other flank.

A 55th minute Nanetti shot deflected off Cade at Delo, but Invicta were close at the other end a minute later when Spiess touched over the crossbar to deny Atkins when Chappell met a James Everitt throw on the right.

Micheal Everitt blocked a 67th minute Nanetti shot when he cut in from the left after a good ball out wide from Cade.

But Invicta were closing in on an equaliser as Spiess saved a 73rd minute Everitt shot when the striker raced onto the ball after Vincent had played the ball up to Atkins.

Lewes right back Lewis Hamilton then had to clear off the line a minute later when Atkins went round goalkeeper Spiess down the right hand side of the penalty area after a Vincent ball.

Austin then tried his luck with a 77th minute volley after a Vincent cross in a move also involving Burchell.

And it was BURCHELL who equalised with a screamer from the edge of the penalty area after a throw in from the right had worked itself across to him.

It was now anybody’s game – with penalties looming – and a home defender blocked an 84th minute Moreby shot after Somner had given the ball away to Atkins and he found Austin on the left hand side of the penalty area.

But Lewes went 2-1 ahead in the 86th minute when MALCOLM slotted the ball home after Hamilton and Ian Draycott had exchanged passes.

Delo then held a 90th minute Draycott cross-shot from the left after a ball from fellow substitute Malcolm.

At the other end, Spiess claimed the ball to deny Invicta striker Everitt down the left hand side of the penalty area during stoppage time.

And CIARDINI curled the ball in from the right hand side of the penalty area deep into stoppage time to make it 3-1 when a Nanetti ball fell to him after Invicta had over-elaborated in getting the ball out of defence as Smith took the ball from Delo and Vincent ran into trouble.

Invicta captain Everitt was the game’s only booking for bringing Nanetti down in the 43rd minute.
