Folkestone Invicta 3-1 Burgess Hill Town
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 28th November, 2009

Folkestone Invicta continued their excellent run in the Ryman League Division One South as goals from Frankie Chappell, Darren Smith and Josh Vincent gave them victory over Burgess Hill at the Buzzlines Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The statistics make happy ready for the Folkestone side which has now taken 22 points out of their last possible 24 and gone nine league matches unbeaten since their solitary reverse at home to Godalming Town.

Invicta kept an unchanged line up for a seventh successive game and enjoyed one of their more comfortable wins of the season.

But it was the visitors who had a good early chance when Matt Percival was put through down the right hand side in the fourth minute, only for home goalkeeper Jack Delo to save with his legs.

Having survived that early scare, Invicta began to create chances of their own as Chappell headed over from close range in the seventh minute after Jimmy Jackson played the ball in from the right hand side following the game's first corner.

Smith was then put through two minutes later but visiting goalkeeper Joe Adams recovered to smother his shot after the midfielder had gone round him and Lloyd Cotton cleared for a corner.

CHAPPELL opened the scoring with a 17 th minute volley which goalkeeper Adams got his hands to but could not prevent from crossing the line after Jackson sent the ball into the penalty area.

And SMITH made it 2-0 in the 27 th minute with a great strike into the bottom corner of the net to round off a good move when James Everitt played the ball back to Simon Austin who threaded it through the middle.

Smith and Chappell thus join James Everitt on four goals as Invicta's leading goalscorers so far this season.

Invicta were now well in control of the game and playing with confidence as Smith let fly again from 30 yards over the crossbar on the half hour mark and a good ball in from Josh Burchell flew just in front of Austin in the middle four minutes later.

But Burgess Hill were thrown a lifeline in the 39 th minute when referee Mick O'Keefe pointed to the penalty spot for a nudge by Invicta captain Micheal Everitt on Percival after a John Lansdale cross from the right hand side.

And LANSDALE himself reduced the deficit from the subsequent spot kick.

James Everitt had the ball in the net early in the second half but for a second successive home Saturday was denied by an assistant referee's flag which had long been up.

Jackson hit a free kick from the edge of the penalty area over the crossbar on the hour after a foul on Burchell.

And Invicta restored their two-goal advantage in the 63 rd minute when right back VINCENT got forward to convert a deep cross from Burchell on the left hand side at the far post.

With the win now back well within their grasp, Invicta created further chances as captain Everitt headed over a 66 th minute Jackson corner on the right and a 77 th minute Jackson shot was plucked out of the air by goalkeeper Adams.

Landsdale had looked the visitors' main threat and his 81 st minute shot from the edge of the penalty area flashed just past the far post after a ball from captain Tom Edmonds.

Vincent then got forward again to hit a low 86 th minute shot at Adams after a move involving Burchell, Liam Dickson and Smith.

Will Berry drilled a low stoppage time shot wide across the Invicta goal from the left hand side of the penalty area.

But Invicta were able to complete their first league double of the season and the final corner count of 12-1 in their favour reflected their dominance.
