Folkestone Invicta 2-0 Dover Athletic
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 26th January, 2010

Two goals from striker Simon Austin gave Folkestone Invicta victory in their Kent Senior Cup Second Round tie against local rivals Dover Athletic at a cold Buzzlines Stadium on Tuesday night in front of a season's best 536 crowd.

28-year-old Austin opened the scoring in the 21 st minute and doubled the lead to seal victory in the 56 th minute.

Dover's attitude to the tie was reflected in their line up as almost their entire strongest starting eleven was rested for Saturday's big F. A. Trophy tie at Stevenage Borough and manager Andy Hessenthaler was not even present, leaving assistant Darren Hare in charge of team affairs.

Invicta manager Neil Cugley has always had more of a liking for the Kent Senior Cup, but was himself forced into a rare change as striker Peter Williams came in for only his second start in place of defender Liam Dickson who broke a nose and was left black and blue after a facial injury sustained against Chipstead on Saturday.

Chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges before AUSTIN broke the deadlock when he struck home from close range in the middle of the penalty area after centre half Frankie Chappell had headed on a James Everitt throw in from the right hand side.

The goal was followed by a couple of bookings as Dover right back Matt Game was cautioned for a late challenge on Invicta playmaker Jimmy Jackson and Invicta captain Micheal Everitt followed him into referee Paul Kelly's notebook for an aerial challenge on Connor Coyne.

Dover goalkeeper John Whitehouse then came out to save from Austin when Darren Smith played a 39 th minute ball in from the right in a move started by Micheal Everitt.

The visitors had threatened little during the first half, with their best moment coming in the 45 th minute when Lee Browning got a shot in from the left hand side of the penalty area, but home goalkeeper Jack Delo was there to save.

AUSTIN increased Invicta's lead after half time when he slotted the ball in again after an exchange of passes between striking partners Williams and James Everitt.

Invicta right back Josh Vincent then got forward to head wide at the far post in the 58 th minute.

The game's first corner did not arrive until as late as the 73 rd minute when Whitehouse touched the ball round the post to deny Williams after a good move involving Smith and James Everitt.

Whitehouse saved again in the 74 th minute when a Jackson cross from the right fell to Chappell in the middle.

Dover won their only corner of the game in the 81 st minute when a shot from Dean Grant – who had a spell with Invicta earlier in the season – was deflected over the crossbar. Substitute Jordan Miller's shot was then blocked at the far post.

At the other end, James Everitt was very close with an 84 th minute header after a corner on the left and Chappell shot wide across goal from the follow up.

Williams then broke through the middle in the 89 th minute, but Whitehouse came out to save.

Invicta gave late substitute appearances to the returning Lee Spiller, himself a former Dover player, Gillingham youngster Olly Bartrum and goalkeeper Luke Stonebridge.
