Folkestone Invicta cruised into the next round of the Kent Senior Cup by recording their biggest win for over ten years on a confidence boosting night for Neil Cugley’s new look side.
Micheal Everitt, James Everitt, Jimmy Jackson, Kieran Byrne, James Dryden and Taylor Thomas were the six different Invicta goalscorers at a Maidstone Road ground where the Folkestone club had gone out of the F. A. Trophy this season and the Kent Senior Cup last season when expected to win.
It was Invicta’s biggest win since February 1998 when striker Dave Arter had himself scored a club record six goals in an 8-1 home victory over Lordswood in the Kent League.
Invicta dominated Tuesday night’s First Round tie from the start and were 2-0 up within ten minutes courtesy of goals from the Everitt brothers, the first time they had both scored in the same game for their hometown club.
Elder brother Micheal had come back into the side from suspension, with Byrne and Thomas also adopting attacking roles in a 4-4-2 formation as they came in for Scott Lindsey, Mark Towse and James Corbett (achilles) after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat against Merstham.
Captain James Dryden hooked the ball at home goalkeeper Daniel Ellis within the opening minute when the ball came in from the right hand side following a throw in.
And Micheal EVERITT opened the scoring in the fourth minute when he took the ball through the middle and planted a great strike into the corner of the net.
It was something of a collectors’ item as it was only Mev’s 12th goal in 282 starting appearances for the club and he will strike few better.
And younger brother James EVERITT rose to head Invicta further ahead in the tenth minute when Jackson sent the game’s first corner over from the right.
Dryden was then wide with another clear 13th minute chance from close range when Thomas played the ball in from the right.
At the other end, Chatham seemed set to pull a goal back on the quarter of an hour mark when Charlie Mitten made a great save with his leg as Mark Brooks was poised to pounce.
But it was Invicta’s night as Josh Vincent shot at goalkeeper Ellis from the edge of the penalty area in the 21st minute and Dryden volleyed wide when Jackson played the ball in from the left a minute later.
Dryden then volleyed over again in the 39th minute from a Jackson free kick on the right after a foul on James Everitt.
Simon Austin tried his luck from 25 yards when he shot at Mitten in the 42nd minute, but the visitors maintained their two-goal lead into the half time interval.
Invicta then also made a strong start to the second half as they won a succession of corners, with Thomas playing a dangerous ball in from the right and centre half Liam Dickson going close in the middle.
Dryden shot over in the 51st minute when Byrne burst down the left hand side to set up the chance.
And it was 3-0 in the 55th minute with another JACKSON special direct into the corner of the net from an inviting looking free kick after a foul on Dryden.
Goalscorer Jackson immediately switched to left back was Josh Burchell (groin) limped off to be replaced buy player-coach Lindsey.
A 57th minute Vincent shot was charged down as Invicta threatened again following a Jackson corner.
Lindsey was then booked for dissent in the 64th minute after a foul on Dryden went unpunished.
Substitute James Taylor won a corner for the home side in the 70th minute when under pressure from Frankie Chappell close to goal on the Invicta’s centre half’s 50th starting appearance for the club.
At the other end, Dryden fired wide from the left hand side of the penalty area a minute later.
It was 4-0 in the 74th minute when Micheal Everitt played the ball out to Dryden on the left and when the latter drilled the ball across goal, BYRNE was there to convert at the far post.
Chatham’s Taylor should have scored at the other end a minute later when James Everitt gave the ball away to Dominic Elmes and the substitute played the ball across goal from the left hand side.
Invicta could afford the luxury of giving first senior outings to teenagers Alex Conyers and Jon Driscoll in place of Mitten and Byrne.
And the visitors had not finished adding to their tally.
Chatham’s Justin Ascheri was booked for a challenge on Thomas and Jackson’s subsequent 84th minute free kick was headed in by top goalscorer DRYDEN, who at last found himself on the scoresheet.
And THOMAS completed the scoring by opening his account for the club in the 90th minute when he drilled the ball across goal into the far corner of the net from the right hand side of the penalty area.
