Folkestone Invicta kept up their remarkable run in the Ryman League Division One South with a 2-1 win away to Leatherhead at a windy Fetcham Grove on Tuesday night.
Invicta remain second in the table on goal difference behind Worthing but with two games in hand. The Folkestone side remain unbeaten away from home in all competitions so far this season, have suffered just one defeat in 16 league games and have now taken 19 points out of their last possible 21.
It was again a case of Invicta grinding out a win thanks to an early goal from Simon Austin and a late winner from striking partner James Everitt which ended Leatherhead's unbeaten home record in the league during 2009-10.
The team news had been positive as playmaker Jimmy Jackson was passed fit after a nasty shin injury sustained in Saturday's top-of-the-table clash at home to Worthing which meant that Invicta were unchanged for a sixth successive match.
And the visitors got off to a perfect start playing against the wind as AUSTIN struck as early as the second minute with a cracking shot from 25 yards which dipped under the crossbar.
But the Tanners were level just four minutes later courtesy of an equally good strike from Kev TERRY who let fly from the right hand side and found the far corner of the net.
Many had predicted a low scoring affair between the two sides with the best defensive record in the division, but the early goals put paid to that.
Invicta midfielders Micheal Everitt and Darren Smith then combined to send James Everitt away through the middle, but a home defender got back to clear.
And Leatherhead came straight down the other end to create a good chance of their own as striker Dominic O'Shea headed over in the middle when Josh Smith did well to get the ball over from the right hand side.
Jackson chipped at home goalkeeper Colin Harris after earlier taking part in a move which also involved Josh Burchell and Austin.
At the other end, an O'Shea shot sailed just over the Invicta crossbar from the right hand side of the penalty area after a touch from Smith.
Invicta central defender Liam Dickson then cleared his lines when the ball came into the visitors' penalty area towards Terry.
The Folkestone side threatened again at the start of the second half when Leatherhead left back Rob Hill got in to prevent Josh Vincent from scoring at the far post when Burchell had gone past Tom Williams and played the ball across goal after receiving it from captain Everitt.
But the stalemate was to continue for much of the second half as Terry shot at Invicta goalkeeper Jack Delo and O'Shea hit a low shot into the side netting after Billy Joe King played the ball across from the left.
An unusual scenario saw an assistant referee have to leave the field injured and home committee member Ray Lewis, himself a referee, had to take over running the line.
O'Shea played a high ball across the Invicta goal from the right hand side of the penalty area.
But Invicta won the game thanks to their best passing move of the match as they worked the ball from left to right and low passes from Smith and Austin presented a chance for EVERITT who coolly slotted the ball into the net.
Everitt is now Invicta's leading goalscorer so far this season with four goals.
Delo came out to claim a through ball to Leatherhead substitute Tommy Hutchings.
But Invicta came close to increasing their lead deep into stoppage time when substitute Peter Williams latched onto a big clearance from goalkeeper Delo but shot just wide of the post.
There were bookings for Leatherhead's Dan Dean, Tommy Williams and King and for Invicta's James Everitt.
