Folkestone Invicta 0-0 Worthing
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 21st November, 2009

Honours were even as the Ryman League Division One South's top two sides in the table could not be separated at the Buzzlines Stadium on Saturday afternoon in front of a season's best crowd of 365 in the division.

It was a keenly fought encounter as Invicta kept a tenth clean sheet in 19 matches in all competitions so far this season against the division's leading goalscorers.

The Folkestone side have not exactly been full of goals at the other end so far this season but thought that they had opened the scoring in the 13 th minute when James Everitt did well to turn and find the net inside the penalty area.

But the ‘goal' was ruled out for offside by an assistant referee's flag which had been up for some time when the ball came in after a move involving Jimmy Jackson and Josh Burchell.

Invicta kept an unchanged starting eleven for a fifth successive match, with centre half Liam Friend making his 150 th starting appearance for the club.

The Folkestone side started well as following Everitt's disallowed effort, striking partner Simon Austin got up to meet a 19 th minute cross from Josh Vincent on the right but visiting goalkeeper Alan Mansfield was able to save.

A 24 th minute Jackson free kick then carried just in front of centre half Frankie Chappell to goalkeeper Mansfield.

At the other end, Invicta midfielder Darren Smith made a vital 30 th minute clearance when Luke Denton played the ball in from the right hand side towards Ross Treleaven.

A fierce shot from Ben Williamson was then well kept out by home goalkeeper Jack Delo three minutes later.

Treleaven did well to make room for himself in the 38 th minute and his shot from the edge of the penalty area deflected off the post and out for a corner.

Invicta responded as a left-footed James Everitt strike was then deflected for a corner at the other end a minute later.

Delo then came out to smother from Brett Patton before half time.

Worthing striker Gavin Gordon was booked for catching Jackson late in the 52 nd minute, an injury which the Invicta playmaker was unable to shrug off.

Jackson was replaced by striker Peter Williams, with James Everitt dropping back into the centre of midfield alongside elder brother Micheal.

When Gordon caught Smith on the hour, referee Ian Bentley called Worthing captain Glen Woodburn over as he issued a final warning.

Ben Johnson shot high and wide from the left hand side of the penalty area in the 56 th minute when he ran at the Invicta defence following a breakaway by Treleaven.

Mansfield came out to claim in the 66 th minute when Austin played the ball in from the right towards captain Micheal Everitt and substitute Williams.

Vincent then got up to head wide two minutes later when Burchell played a deep ball in from the left.

Invicta then had some defending to do as Chappell cleared from under his crossbar in the 70 th minute for a second successive corner.

Johnson picked his spot three minutes later but his left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area was comfortably dealt with by Delo.

Gordon headed wide in the 80 th minute when Johnson did well down the left hand side and sent the ball over.

Visiting captain Woodburn was then booked for bringing down Williams.

Woodburn then got forward to head wide at the far post after a free kick from Johnson on the left.

By the end, neither side would have been too disappointed with a point apiece as Worthing recorded their first draw in 17 league matches so far this season.

Teenage goalkeeper Owen Ridley, son of former Invicta striker Steve, was an unused substitute for the first time at senior level, having being in the squad for the previous weekend's postponed game at Croydon Athletic.
