Folkestone Invicta were out of luck again at the Buzzlines Stadium as they went down 2-0 against in-form Worthing in their final home match of 2008.
Invicta were again left to reflect on chances that went astray as they disappointing recent home record continued.
The Folkestone side has now won just one of its last eight home matches in all competitions, that a 2-0 win over Corinthian-Casuals on October 25th in the final match before some players had to leave the club due to its well-documented financial crisis.
But this was not a bad performance from Invicta against a good side.
The home side hit both the crossbar and the post but were beaten by goals from visiting strikers Ross Treleaven and Mickey Demetriou.
TRELEAVEN opened the scoring in the 29th minute when he forced the ball over the line despite the attentions of a defender after home goalkeeper Charlie Mitten had made a one-handed save to deny Demetriou who had broken down the left hand side of the penalty area.
DEMETRIOU himself made the points safe in the 87th minute when he drilled the ball in after substitute Richard Greenfield had caught Invicta on the break and played the ball across from the left hand side.
Worthing had started the game with a succession of early corners, one of which led to a melee in the Invicta goal mouth.
Treleaven then shot across the Invicta goal from a tight angle on the left hand side of the penalty area in the 23rd minute.
Invicta were close three minutes later when Frankie Chappell headed over a Jimmy Jackson ball in from the left hand side.
There was a scare for Invicta after 27 minutes when the ball was allowed to reach Treleaven inside the penalty area, but Mitten came out to save despite not being fully fit.
Worthing were though ahead a minute later when Invicta lost possession.
Invicta’s best moment of the first half came during stoppage time when a Jackson shot skimmed the top of the crossbar following a good interchange of passes with Darren Smith inside the penalty area.
After the interval, a 53rd minute Demetriou shot flashed across the Invicta goal after striking partner Treleaven gained possession down the left hand side of the penalty area.
At the other end, a Smith corner from the left on the hour led to a scare in the Worthing goal mouth but the ball just stayed out of the goal.
Worthing threatened again in the 63rd minute when Treleaven was given on-side and went round Mitten down the right hand side, but centre half Liam Friend cleared when the striker attempted to play the ball across to substitute Enzo Benn.
Invicta’s Josh Vincent had to go off with a head injury to be replaced by Kieran Byrne.
Visiting striker Demetriou hit a good 67th minute strike which flashed past the far post from the left hand side of the penalty area.
But the home side were pressing for an equaliser as Smith hooked his shot over from a 70th minute Jackson corner and a great Jackson ball put Byrne clear inside the penalty area a minute later, only for goalkeeper Chris Winterton to save at the expense of a corner.
An 81st minute James Everitt header was just wide when Smith played the ball in. The versatile pair had switched positions as Everitt moved up front and Smith reverted to right back.
Demetriou’s late second goal ended Invicta’s hopes of saving the day.
And the home side were denied a consolation when Smith struck the post with a 25-yard free kick in the 88th minute. It was the third consecutive home match in which Invicta had struck the post at the Town End.
There were bookings for Invicta’s Micheal Everitt and for Worthing’s Paul Kennett, Jamie Brotherton and captain Ben Andrews.
