Folkestone Invicta 1-0 Burgess Hill Town
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 20th September, 2008

A 56th minute header from Nick Humphrey was enough to give Folkestone Invicta all three points against Burgess Hill Town in the Ryman League Division One South on Saturday afternoon.

Defender HUMPHREY (right) headed in captain Lee Gledhill’s free kick from the right hand side for what proved to be the only goal of the game.

It was Invcita’s fourth successive home win and a third consecutive clean sheet at the Buzzlines Stadium.

The game was a tight affair and never a classic on a sunny afternoon.

There had been few chances during the early exchanges before Humphrey shot over when Jimmy Jackson played the ball in from the right after 22 minutes.

But Burgess Hill enjoyed their fair share of possession as Nick Fogden played the ball through to Richard Greenfield on the right but Charlie Mitten came out to save.

Invicta defender Humphrey then cleared from close to his line in the 33rd minute after a dangerous run by Kane Louis down the left hand side of the penalty area.

Louis then hit a low shot wide from the edge of the penalty area and Greenfield headed over in the 42nd minute from a deep Louis cross on the left after Dan Beck played the ball out wide.

But Invicta were close in the 45th minute when Craig Stoner saved with his feet from James Everitt after a big kick from home goalkeeper Mitten into the visitors’ penalty area.

There were chances at both ends in the 47th minute as Stoner denied Everitt again and Mark Green was close with the follow up, while Lloyd Cotton shot over from the left hand side of the penalty area for Burgess Hill.

Ben Johnson headed wide for the visitors from Matt Piper’s cross on the right after 54 minutes, but Invicta soon broke the deadlock.

Reuben French shot wide from the edge of the penalty area for Burgess Hill in the 64th minute.

But Invicta threatened again after 67 minutes when Stoner held a well-struck James Dryden shot at the second attempt following a Micheal Everitt (left) ball.

Humphrey got into the Burgess Hill penalty area again in the 77th minute when he fired over from the right hand side.

There was a scare for Burgess Hill goalkeeper Stoner after 84 minutes when he brought Dryden down outside the penalty area on the touchline near the dressing rooms. But there were plenty of covering defenders and referee Nolan Wilde waved a yellow card.

Micheal Everitt shot at Stoner after a good 87th minute run into the penalty area, while Cotton shot over from the right hand side a minute later.

There were also bookings for Invicta’s Micheal Everitt and Burgess Hill’s Greenfield and substitute Steve Harper.
