Faversham Town 1-2 Folkestone Invicta
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 20th July, 2010

Goals from Josh Burchell and Paul Jones gave Folkestone Invicta victory in their first official pre-season friendly of the summer away to Faversham Town at Salters Lane on Tuesday night.

Left back BURCHELL opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute when he latched onto a ball forward from central defender Liam Friend and slotted the ball into the net.

Dane LUCHFORD equalised for Kent League champions Faversham in the 22 nd minute when he shot past Invicta goalkeeper Jack Delo after hesitancy in the visitors' defence when Michael Dodsworth played the ball into the penalty area.

But JONES restored Invicta's lead with what turned out to be the winning goal in the 64 th minute when he get clear of the home defence to meet another ball from captain Friend and apply a confident low finish.

Jones had looked sharp on his return to Invicta colours and visiting supporters also got a first viewing of player-coach Roland Edge back at the club from Maidstone United and new signing Rob Kember from Bromley.

Invicta had won a low-key friendly against Canterbury City on Saturday.

The Folkestone side made a good start as both Kember and Jones tried their luck with shots from outside the penalty area in the opening couple of minutes.

And Jones was put through in the third minute but was held up and home goalkeeper Rob French was able to save.

But Burchell's strike gave Neil Cugley's side an early breakthrough and striker Simon Austin then cut in from the right hand side and shot at goalkeeper French in the tenth minute.

At the other end, a 14th minute Luchford shot was blocked for a corner.

And it was Luchford, younger brother of manager Justin, who shot the home side level.

Darren Smith hit a 32 nd minute free kick over the crossbar for Invicta and Jones shot on the turn at goalkeeper French six minutes later.

Faversham's Steve O'Brien shot at Invicta goalkeeper Delo when Andrew Miller played the ball into the penalty area.

But Invicta had another chance just before half time when Austin's header was touched round the post for a corner by goalkeeper French after a Smith free kick on the left.

Inivcta started the second half strongly as Austin flicked over when Jones played the ball in from the right, centre half Frankie Chappell headed at the goalkeeper and Kember was just unable to convert in the goalmouth.

Austin then drilled a low shot across goal from the right hand side of the penalty area after being picked out by striking partner Jones in the 59 th minute.

Sam Callender headed wide with a good chance for Faversham in the 62 nd minute when O'Brien did well to play an inviting ball over from the left.

But it was Invicta who scored the only goal of the second half through Jones.

Delo had to save for Invicta in the 65 th minute when the ball came off Roy Guiver and into the path of striker Richard Sinden and Callender could only hook his shot back across goal a minute later when Luchford played the ball over to him at the far post from the right hand side of the penalty area.

The customary second half substitutions saw Invicta give a run out to midfielder Michael Hollidya, striker James Waters (cousin of defender Chappell) and young goalkeeper Owen Ridley (son of former Invicta striker Steve).

An 82 nd minute Waters shot was blocked after he latched onto a Josh Vincent ball.

And another Waters shot was charged down in the 90 th minute when the skilful Olly Bartrum played a good ball across from the left to James Dryden at the far post and the ball came back across the penalty area.
