Eastbourne Town 1-2 Folkestone Invicta
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 19th August, 2009

Goals from Micheal Everitt and David Cory gave Folkestone Invicta their first Ryman League Division One South win of the 2009-10 season at Eastbourne Town on Wednesday night.

The club's longest-serving player Everitt opened the scoring just before half time and summer signing Cory restored the visitors' lead after the interval having set up the first goal.

It was a deserved victory for Invicta on a pleasant summer's evening at The Saffrons which was in complete contrast to the constant rain of last season's visit in a 2-2 draw.

Invicta kept the same starting line up which had begun the season with a goalless draw at home to Dulwich Hamlet and the Folkestone side dominated the first half.

Following some early possession play for Invicta, centre half Frankie Chappell sent a long ball forward to Josh Vincent, whose third minute shot was saved by Russell Tanner, with the home goalkeeper reacting again to hold the ball and avert any further danger.

Invicta had the ball in the net in the ninth minute, but Cory's ‘goal' was ruled out for offside when the striker converted Michael Yianni's shot from the right hand side of the penalty area at the far post in a move started by midfielders Everitt and Darren Smith.

Hopes of an away victory would have been raised by the opening exchanges.

Josh Burchell had a shot charged down when Jimmy Jackson sent over the game's first corner in the 25 th minute and Vincent was close with a header when Yianni played the ball across from the left.

Micheal Everitt tried his luck from a 30-yard strike in the 28 th minute but goalkeeper Tanner was able to hold comfortably.

It had been all Invicta, but the home side finally threatened on the half hour mark when a good ball from Adam Davidson found Mark Goodwin on the right hand side and his cross flew in front of Terry Payne in the middle.

Burchell got across to clear the danger when the ball broke to Goodwin inside the penalty area in the 37 th minute and Ben Putland headed over a Danny Simmonds free kick two minutes later following a foul by Chappell on Jamie Salvidge.

But Invicta were rewarded for their first half pressure in the 41 st minute when Cory beat his man down the left hand side and played the ball back for captain EVERITT to sidefoot a low shot firmly into the net.

Both sides had further chances before half time as a Salvidge shot deflected up at goalkeeper Jack Delo and the battling Cory shot wide from close range.

But Invicta were pegged back at the start of the second half when a 48 th minute ball from Davidson found SALVIDGE down the right hand side and the striker's well-taken lob over Delo brought the home side level.

Invicta made a quick response though as CORY headed in a 53 rd minute Vincent cross from the right to open his account for the club.

Cory threatened again six minutes later but was pulled back by defender Matt Sellick, only for the referee to wave play on as the striker got a shot in at Tanner.

Smith was booked for leading the Invicta protests as the home side broke and Payne shot over after running to the edge of the penalty area.

There were chances at both ends in he 64 th minute as Sellick headed onto the roof of the net at the far post from Eastbourne's only corner of the game and home goalkeeper Tanner touched a Yianni shot over the crossbar for a corner after the Invicta player had raced pats Sellick and shot with the outside of his boot.

Burchell cleared off the line for Invicta in the 74th minute when Goodwin broke down the left hand side and pulled the ball back for Jack Dixon on the edge of the penalty area.

Invicta gave a Ryman League debut to substitute Billy Sommerville and threatened again in the 78 th minute when Tanner made a good save with his feet to deny Cory.

Tanner then made another one-handed save over the crossbar in the 82 nd minute to deny Cory after initially saving from James Everitt following a Chappell ball.

Everitt then should have scored two minutes later when he did the hard work to create a clear opening but shot wide after a great run from striking partner Cory.

Smith beat Peter Featherstone down the left hand side of the penalty area in the 88 th minute and Everitt volleyed wide from the subsequent cross.

Teenage striker Jon Driscoll came on during stoppage time and was involved in a flare up on the final whistle after challenging goalkeeper Tanner to a through ball.

Eastbourne's Featherstone had been booked for dissent in the 73 rd minute.

Invicta will now feel that their season is up and running after a turbulent summer of uncertainty off the field.
