Folkestone Invicta were beaten 2-0 away to third-placed Fleet Town in their final away match of a troubled 2008-09 season at as sunny Calthorpe Park in Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.
Top goalscorer Mark Anderson opened the scoring for the home side in the 18th minute and substitute Steve Hemmings made it 2-0 in the 61st minute.
Invicta had gone into the game with an enforced change as James Everitt (hamstring) had to come back from injury to replace striker Jacob Arnold-Smith who had missed his coach pick-up point to the game.
It had been Arnold-Smith who had scored the only goal of the game on Easter Monday in the home match against Ashford Town.
Invicta made a good enough start on Saturday as captain James Dryden hit the post on his 50th starting appearance for the club so far this season.
But it was Andy Sinton’s side who broke the deadlock when ANDERSON found the net after a Mark Paterson header following a free kick.
The home side then had another chance when striker Ed Smith fired wide after being put through by goalscorer Anderson.
Fleet have the best defensive record in the Ryman League Division One South this season and needed victory to confirm their place in the play offs.
With Michael Smith pulling their strings in midfield, Fleet increased their lead following a disputed corner just after the hour mark.
Invicta centre half Frankie Chappell was pushed as he shepherded the ball out of play and the players ran back expecting a free kick to the visitors. But the referee awarded a corner and substitute HEMMINGS headed in Tyron Smith’s subsequent ball over.
There were bookings for Fleet’s Douglas and Hemmings and Invicta’s Josh Vincent.
