An 83 rd minute winner from substitute Peter Williams took Folkestone Invicta to the top of the Ryman League Division One South table as they edged out Walton Casuals 3-2 a windy Buzzlines Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
WILLIAMS showed good composure when Darren Smith picked him out with a great pass to the left as he took the ball on and dinked it over goalkeeper Chico Ramos and into the far corner of the net.
It was only Williams' second substitute appearance for Invicta and his first in a home match, but his was to be the decisive contribution.
Both sides had gone into the game among the lowest scorers in the division, but served up a five-goal thriller as Invicta won the day despite conceding two goals in a game for the first time so far this season.
The Folkestone club kept the same starting line up which had drawn 1-1 at Merstham in midweek as goalkeeper Luke Stonebridge continued to deputise for Jack Delo (away overseas for the weekend).
But it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the seventh minute thanks to a 25-yard free kick from Anthony GALE.
At the other end, centre half Kristian Webb cleared from close to his line after a headed touch to a Jimmy Jackson free kick on the right.
Nick Burton volleyed over for the visitors after a Martin Grant cross from the line, while Invicta's Simon Austin's shot was saved by Ramos after defenders Josh Burchell and Liam Friend had combined down the left hand side.
Invicta equalised in the 31 st minute when right back Josh VINCENT scored his first home goal for the club by converting a Smith ball at the far post in a good move also involving captain Micheal Everitt.
Friend then did well to pick out Austin in the 43 rd minute, but the ball went off Burton for a corner.
Jackson hit a well-struck shot at goalkeeper Ramos at the start of the second half when Austin played the ball back to Vincent.
For Walton Casuals, Grant then volleyed wide when Paul Marney ran at the Invicta defence.
Ramos made a good 58 th minute save when Invicta defender Liam Dickson got forward to meet a Jackson free kick.
But the home side went ahead when Smith's subsequent corner from the left came back out to the edge of the penalty area and was met by a second spectacular JACKSON strike of the week.
Ten different players have now scored for Invicta so far this season, but Jackson becomes the first to score in two different matches.
The visitors responded and Stonebridge denied Grant from close range on the hour mark at the expense of a corner.
And Walton Casuals were level in the 67 th minute when striker James Rose met a corner from the right and GRANT got a touch at the far post.
Invicta were chasing a winner, but the winner carried the ball out for a goal kick at the far post when substitute Dean Grant played it just in front of Smith in the 82 nd minute.
But Smith was to turn provider for Williams' moment of glory a minute later after the substitute had replaced defender Dickson.
Walton Casuals, though, were not finished as an 85 th minute shot from substitute Scott Harris was deflected for a corner.
And Invicta had goalkeeper Stonebridge to thank for a close range stoppage time save to deny substitute Craig Davies after Harris had chipped the ball through.
