Chatham Town 3-2 Folkestone Invicta

Date:   13.11.07
Competition:   John Ullman Kent Senior Cup
Venue:   Maidstone Road
Attendance:   97

Folkestone Invicta's poor recent run reached a new low on Tuesday night when they went out of the John Ullman Kent Senior Cup 3-2 away to Chatham Town in their First Round tie at Maidstone Road.

Invicta trailed 3-0 after an hour before they hit back with two goals from substitute Ellis Remy.

The Folkestone side has now gone eight matches without a win after an unbeaten run of 11 matches and are clearly in need of some kind of confidence boost after going out of all four cup competitions which they enter in under a month, three defeats of which have now been away to clubs from the Ryman League Division One South.

Invicta responded to Saturday's disappointing defeat against Maidstone by recalling local players Martin Chandler and Roy Guiver from their spells at Kent League club Herne Bay for their first appearances of the season in Invicta colours.

Guiver played the first half in attack alongside Damian Abel before switching back to centre half in the second half when substitute Remy partnered Mark Saunders up front.

Chatham partnered recent signing Andy Constable and young Justin Ascheri in attack, both making only their second appearances of the season for the club. And it was Ascheri (2) and Constable who scored the goals to put Chatham 3-0 up.

ASCHERI opened the scoring in the 35 th minute when the ball was nodded down to him and he caught goalkeeper Charlie Mitten by surprise with a half volley from the left hand side just outside the penalty area.

And striking partner CONSTABLE made it 2-0 in the 40 th minute with a well-taken header when Mark Brooks played the ball in from the right.

ASCHERI struck again with what turned out to be the winning goal in the 59 th minute when he headed in a corner from the left hand side.

REMY reduced the arrears in the 62 nd minute when the ball was played in to him down the left hand channel and he found the far corner of the net despite substitute goalkeeper Dan Ellis getting something on the ball without preventing it from going in.

REMY completed the scoring with ca well-struck 87 th minute shot to make him Invicta's leading marksman so far this season with six goals.

Earlier, Mitten had saved from Ascheri after 13 minutes when the Chatham striker attempted to stab the ball past him.

At the other end, James Everitt had the ball in the net four minutes later, but his header was ruled out for offside after home goalkeeper Miroslav Oravec had kept out a Guiverr header following Ben Sly's ball in.

But Chatham's two first half goals piled the misery on for Invicta and goalkeeper Oravec preserved his side's two-goal advantage when he touched a Saunders header round the post for Invicta's first corner after 41 minutes following a ball in from the right.

Substitute goalkeeper Ellis touched the ball over for a corner when Sly drilled the ball in from the right hand side after 56 minutes, while at the other end Constable played in a dangerous low ball from the left a minute later just before Chatham's third goal.

Mitten saved from Craig Govey in the 65 th minute when Ascheri showed great tenacity to set up the chance and Mitten saved again nine minutes later when he denied Constable following a good break which saw Ascheri square the ball across goal after a good run and pass from Okeosieme Okeahialam.

James Everitt shot over for Invicta following a Remy ball and Abel then also fired over in the 79 th minute when he ran at the home defence following a Saunders touch.

An 82 nd minute Saunders shot was blocked by a defender after a Remy touch and Abel then shot wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Kevin Watson shot wide from just outside the box following Saunders' 86 th minute touch before Remy's second goal raised Invicta's hopes of saving the day as they played nearly six minutes of stoppage time.

Invicta's Guiver was booked for a 59 th minute challenge.

The first winners of the Kent Senior Cup in their first ever game at Maidstone Road way back in 1889, Chatham had not won a game in the competition for five years since Leigh Bremner scored twice in a 4-1win over Fisher Athletic.

Bremner is now, of course, an Invicta player but had to watch from the sidelines with a hamstring injury, along with fellow absentees Micheal Everitt (suspended), Roland Edge (cut forehead) and Samuel Kola Okikiolu (calf), with James Corbett (migraine) also missing.

Young John Ellender took his place on the Invicta bench for the first time as an unused substitute on what may have been a memorable milestone for him personally, but was generally another night to forget for the Folkestone club.
