Folkestone Invicta 0-4 Aveley

Published: 10th November, 2009

Folkestone Invicta crashed out of The Championship Manager (Isthmian League) Cup when they went down 4-0 at home to Aveley in Tuesday night's Second Round tie.

Ryman Premier League side Aveley gave Invicta a lesson in finishing as they inflicted the heaviest defeat of the season on the Folkestone side, who had not previously lost by more than a single goal so far during 2009-10.

But it was an entertaining game in which the final scoreline hardly reflected the balance of play, possession or chances created.

Ryan Edgar had given the Essex side an early lead and the visitors later ran away with the tie with three goals in the final 20 minutes courtesy of Piers Wixon (2) and Junior Dadson.

Invicta kept the same starting eleven which had won at Corinthian-Casuals on Saturday which made it a momentous night for captain Micheal Everitt who equalled friend and team mate James Dryden's record of 324 starting appearances for his hometown club.

27-year-old Everitt gave a typically wholehearted performance and was denied a first half equaliser by a stunning save from visiting goalkeeper James Marrable.

The visitors made the early running as a cross from the left hand side flew in front of striker Ian Luck in the middle.

And the visitors opened the scoring in the eighth minute when EDGAR headed in the game's first corner, taken by Mitch Hahn on the left.

But Invicta responded with three chances in as many minutes ten minutes later.

James Everitt first made a chance for himself but shot wide, left back Josh Burchell then burst through the middle and dinked the ball over Marrable but wide of the post and striker Simon Austin then shot at the Aveley goalkeeper when Burchell broke down the left and pulled the ball back.

For Aveley, Matthew Johnson hit a low shot wide of the post from outside the penalty area.

But it was Invicta who were creating the majority of the chances as Marrable got up to make a fingertip save to touch over a well-struck 25-yard shot from Invicta captain Everitt as the home side won their first corner of the game in the 23 rd minute.

Strikers Everitt and Austin were then just unable to force the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble six minutes later when right back Josh Vincent headed a Burchell cross from the left back across goal at the far post.

Centre half Liam Friend then got forward in the 37 th minute but the ball carried through to goalkeeper Marrable when Jimmy Jackson and James Everitt combined to put the ball through to him.

And a 42 nd minute James Everitt shot was deflected over the crossbar for a corner when he received the ball from elder brother Micheal.

The home side continued to create chances after the interval as Jackson let fly from 25 yards but shot wide when Micheal Everitt squared the ball to him in a move also involving James Everitt, Vincent and Darren Smith.

And Frankie Chappell shot over in the 51 st minute after both Burchell and Liam Dickson had battled in an attempt to convert Vincent's cross as Invicta got defenders into the oppositions' penalty area.

Aveley's Dadson cut in from the left and hit a fierce 53 rd minute shot at Invicta goalkeeper Jack Delo and left winger Dadson then hit two further efforts towards the home goal ten minutes later to remind the Folkestone side that Aveley still carried a further threat.

A misunderstanding between Austin and Burchell saw an Invicta chance go astray when Vincent played the ball across from the right hand side in a move also involving James Everitt and Smith.

Visiting goalkeeper Marrable then denied Invicta again when he kept out a 25-yard Jackson special in the 70 th minute following passes between midfield colleagues Everitt and Smith.

And the visitors then took control of the tie as WIXON received the ball from the right hand side and hit a great 71 st minute shot across goal and into the far corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Aveley had left top goalscorer Marin Tuohy on the substitutes' bench, but showed that they had strength in depth.

Invicta substitute Peter Williams volleyed wide with a spectacular 80 th minute volley from a Micheal Everitt corner on the right.

But Aveley went 3-0 up in the 81 st minute when Sam Holloway cleared the ball up to Dadson on the left and his subsequent low cross was converted at the far post by WIXON for the striker's second goal of the night.

An 85 th minute Burchell free kick from the edge of the penalty area was held by goalkeeper Marrable as Invicta sought a consolation goal.

But it was Aveley who completed the scoring in the 90 th minute when DADSON scored with a well-struck low shot after a good ball through from Johnson.

Whilst it was a record-equalling night for club stalwart Michael Everitt, at the other end of the scale, youth team player Tom King was given a first senior call up as an unused substitute.

The 164 attendance was Invicta's lowest gate at the Buzzlines Stadium since last season's League Cup tie at home to eventual winners Tilbury.
