Folkestone Invicta 0-3 Tooting & Mitcham United
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 9th August, 2008

Folkestone Invicta's final pre-season game of the summer ended in disappointment as they lost 3-0 at home to Tooting & Mitcham United in the annual Sid Burvill Cup match at a wet Buzzlines Stadium.

Tooting were promoted to the Ryman Premier League via the play-offs last season and won the game thanks to goals from strikers Paul Vines (2) and Ben Abbey.

Invicta have seven days in which to re-group before beginning life in the Ryman League Division One South with an away trip to Worthing, the club whom Tooting beat in last season's play-off semi finals.

Invicta gave a first start to most recent signing Mark Green at left back and a first home start to goalkeeper Naz Jevrons as Charlie Mitten sat it as a precaution over a calf injury.

The home side made a positive start as captain Lee Gledhill burst forward down the right hand side and hit the crossbar with a cross-shot after beating his man.

At the other end, a Dave Stevens shot was deflected for a corner.

And it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a well-taken strike from VINES who found the net past goalkeeper Jevrons from just outside the left hand side of the penalty area.

Tooting looked as though they were going to increase their lead in the 37th minute when Jason Pinnock put a good ball through to Dean Hamlin, but the latter's shot was smothered for a corner.

Invicta nearly equalised two minutes later when a James Corbett (pictured right) shot fell into the path of James Dryden and his subsequent strike was headed off the line for a corner by Jamie Byatt.

But Tooting soon went 2-0 up in the 40th minute when VINES struck again as he beat goalkeeper Jevrons to brother Joe's cross and headed home.

Striker Vines had proved to be the difference during the first half but did not come out after the interval.

Invicta themselves replaced Corbett and Lee Spiller with Byron Walker and James Everitt at half time.

And the home side threatened at the start of the second half when Craig Wilkins should have done better as he side-footed his shot wide when striking partner Dryden played the ball in from the left.

Tooting left back Byatt sliced his 63rd minute shot wide when he got forward to meet a cross from right back Hamlin as the visitors remained in control and Jevrons then kept out an overhead strike from substitute Abbey four minutes later.

And it was ABBEY completed the scoring in the 70th minute when he headed in from close range after Jevrons had partially saved when Byatt got in on the end of substitute Jon Henry-Hayden's cross from the right.

A Dryden shot was deflected for a corner when Wilkins broke down the right hand side, but this was not to be Invicta's afternoon as the rain continued to fall.

Invicta's Micheal Everitt had dropped out minutes before the kick off after feeling unwell.
