Folkestone Invicta 1-0 Eastbourne Town
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 9th March, 2010

Folkestone Invicta made it three successive 1-0 wins to stay top of the Ryman League Division One South as new striker Brendon Cass made it two winning goals in two games as the league leaders narrowly overcame bottom placed Eastbourne Town at a cold Buzzlines Stadium on Tuesday night.

After a non-event of a first half, CASS got the final touch from close range in the first minute of the second half after visiting goalkeeper Pat Gannon had let the ball slip when Liam Dickson met a Darren Smith corner from the right hand side.

It was former Tonbridge and Dartford striker Cass' home debut for Invicta after he had scored the only goal of the game just before half time at Met Police on Saturday.

Invicta have now responded with four straight wins since their recent 2-0 defeat at Sittingbourne, starting with a 2-1 win at Chatham Town, for whom Cass scored the goal that night (meaning that he has scored in three of Invicta's last four matches)!

1-0 wins have become Invicta's trademark this season, this being their 11 th in the league as the Folkestone side has conceded just 16 goals in 30 league matches so far this incredible season.

After 17 successive league matches with the same starting eleven, Invicta were forced into their second consecutive change as Lee Spiller came in for his first start since September 2008 in place of Jimmy Jackson who was unable to shrug off the shin injury that had seen him be carried off at Met Police on Saturday.

But Invicta were to cerate very little during the first half, with a freak Josh Vincent cross-shot sailing just over the crossbar.

Eastbourne midfielder James Fraser had a couple of 25-yard strikes at goal, with Jack Delo saving the first one in the 36 th minute and the second one flying just wide of the post two minutes later.

It was a different story at the start of the second half as Invicta responded to whatever was said at half time by hitting something of a purple patch.

Left back Josh Burchell took the ball forward at the start of the second half and his shot was touched round the post by Gannon for the corner that led to Invicta's goal, with unsung hero Dickson again playing a big part in the breakthrough.

For the first ten minutes of the second half it was all Invicta as Dickson won a corner from a Vincent ball and a Cass shot was deflected for another corner within minutes of the goal.

A 55 th minute shot from striker James Everitt on the edge of the penalty area was then touched round the post for another corner by Gannon.

But Eastbourne responded and a good 59 th minute strike from Chris Dicker was saved by Delo when Scott McDonald pulled the ball back from the right hand side.

Dicker then hit a free kick over the crossbar on the hour mark and Brain Storrie cut in from the left hand side and hit a low shot at Delo in the 64 th minute.

But Invicta have become used to holding onto 1-0 leads and defender Dickson got forward again to try his luck from 25 yards in the 81 st minute with a shot that dipped just over the crossbar.

The match will also be remembered for Eastbourne wearing one of Invicta's change kits after a mix up over what shirts to bring.
