Godalming Town 0-2 Folkestone Invicta
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 9th February, 2010

Goals from defender Liam Dickson and Simon Austin gave Folkestone Invicta an impressive 2-0 win away to Godalming Town at a cold Wey Court on Tuesday night as Neil Cugley's side maintained their lead at the top of the Ryman League Division One South.

A first ever win over Godalming gives Invicta six points out of their three visits to Surrey in eight days and two successive wins and clean sheets since their first away defeat of the season at title rivals Croydon Athletic and news that the club had entered into a CVA arrangement.

Dickson opened the scoring in the 14 th minute with his first senior goal for the club and Austin thumped home a second goal in the 48 th minute.

Home manager Chuck Martini had been sent to the stands before half time by referee A Laver.

Godalming enjoyed plenty of possession but could not find a way past Invicta's young five-man defence that is enjoying such a tremendous season, having now conceded just 13 goals in 25 league matches so far and now having recorded 13 clean sheets in the league.

Invicta's striking eleven picks itself at the moment and there was no change to that here.

Austin hit a low fifth minute shot that was comfortably dealt with by home goalkeeper Rodney Chiweshe after a Josh Burchell cross came back out when Jimmy Jackson played the ball out to the left.

At the other end, Glen Stanley did not make the most of his ninth minute chance when he chipped wide after being given on-side following a ball over the Invicta defence.

But it was Invicta who went ahead from the game's first corner which was conceded somewhat cheaply by the home side. Darren Smith sent over the set piece from the left hand side, James Everitt headed it on and DICKSON pounced to strike the ball home.

21-year-old Dickson has been one of the unsung heroes at Invicta in the past couple of seasons, a consistent performer at the heart of the defence.

Dickson had been the first player to arrive at the ground having worked down the road at Guildford during the day. And his long overdue first goal for the club followed his 50 th starting appearance at Croydon Athletic the previous Tuesday night after having previously been carried off at Chatham Town and then having his nose broken at home to Chipstead recently.

Stanley shot wide of the far post with a speculative 25 th minute shot across goal from the left hand side of the Invicta penalty area.

But Invicta had a chance to increase their lead in the 33 rd minute when Chiweshe saved with his feet to deny James Everitt after striking partner Austin played him through following a forward pass from Burchell.

Godalming responded as a Richard Taylor shot lacked power two minutes later when goalkeeper Jack Delo punched a cross away and Stanley cut in from the left and shot at Delo in the 37 th minute.

Aryan Tajbakhsh then shot just over the Invicta crossbar from outside the penalty area in the 42 nd minute.

Invicta finished the first half going forward as captain Micheal Everitt let fly from 35 yards at Chiweshe on what was his 400 th appearance for the club, including games in which he has come on as a substitute.

And the visitors increased their lead at the start of the second half when AUSTIN hit a powerful shot into the roof of the net when a Burchell shot had fallen into his path after hitting James Everitt on the heel.

The home side appealed for offside against Everitt, but the referee confirmed that the goal would stand after consulting one of his assistants.

Austin now joins striking partner Everitt as Invicta's joint top goalscorer with six strikes so far this season.

It was a long way back for Godalming now and the home side had to wait until the 65 th minute for their first corner of the game when Invicta defender Liam Friend blocked from Stanley.

A well-struck 86 th minute shot from Peter Williams was palmed away for a corner by home goalkeeper Chiweshe when a good ball from Smith sent the Invicta substitute racing away.

At the other end, Godalming substitute Andy Ottley hit a good strike at Delo after Victor Kiri played the ball up the left hand side to Phil Williams.

There were bookings for Godalming's James Wade, Kiri and Russell Pym.

This win takes Invicta 11 points clear at the top of the table, though with the prospect of ten points to be taken away.

The show goes on. Still smiling in the face of adversity.
