Folkestone Invicta 2-0 Dulwich Hamlet
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 6th September, 2008

Folkestone Invicta made it four Ryman League Division One South wins out of five as well-taken goals from James Dryden and Andy Pugh gave them victory over Dulwich Hamlet in a feisty encounter at the Buzzlines Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

DRYDEN opened the scoring in the 35th minute direct from a sweetly struck free kick on the right hand edge of the penalty area as the visitors were made to pay for one of several first half misdemeanours.

And PUGH (right) made the points safe in the 78th minute when he took down a Jimmy Jackson pass superbly and demonstrated his class by drawing goalkeeper Jamie Lunan and slotting the ball into the net.

The move which led to the second goal had been started when Liam Friend intercepted a cross from Scott Simpson and played the ball out to captain Lee Gledhill on the right.

Invicta made one change from their F. A. Cup starting line up as Pugh, on loan from Gillingham, returned to the attack in place of the unlucky James Everitt, who had scored three goals in the two ties against Sevenoaks.

But the younger Everitt brother was soon to be called into the action as Lee Spiller became the first victim of some strong early Dulwich challenges.

The home side also had a couple of early penalty appeals turned down, the first for handball and the second for a possible push on Dryden.

A 19th minute Mohame Coly shot from outside the penalty area had Invicta goalkeeper Charlie Mitten back-peddling before he pushed the ball over the crossbar for a corner.

At the other end, a Dryden cross-shot flashed across the Dulwich penalty area in the 22nd minute following a move involving Pugh and Jackson on the left.

But the fun and games were to follow as Invicta centre half Matt Bourne escaped a handball decision but was then taken out by a very late Laurent Hamici challenge which resulted in a booking for the Dulwich forward.

Ryan Bernard was then also cautioned for persistent dissent two minutes before Dryden broke the deadlock.

Some of Dulwich’s over-zealous tackling was like a throwback to a bygone footballing era. And Simpson somehow escaped with just a yellow card for a horrendous 37th minute lunge at centre half Friend.

Back to the football and Pugh shot over in the 40th minute after a great through ball from Micheal Everitt.

Invicta continued to create chances at the start of the second half as Dryden shot wastefully wide when a Jackson free kick picked him out on the right hand side of the penalty area. And Cedric Neakam then cleared when Gledhill drilled the ball in from the right as Jackson and Dryden worked the ball out wide.

Dulwich, though, came into the game without really threatening the Invicta goal, and Daniel Nwanze hit a low shot at Mitten in the 60th minute after Steve May’s ball forward.

Invicta’s Micheal Everitt was then booked following an altercation with Nwanze.

Invicta’s Friend (above) headed wide from Jackson’s 63rd minute corner on the right, while Dulwich’s Hamici was just unable to get a close range touch following a cross from the left six minutes later.

A Dryden shot was charged down by Billy Chattaway close to the line, but Pugh was to soon increase the home side’s lead.

James Everitt could not get enough power on an 84th minute header from a Jackson free kick after a foul by substitute Peter Martin on Micheal Everitt.

Dulwich had not endeared themselves to home supporters and were denied any sort of consolation as Mitten made a fingertip save to touch an 89tth minute May shot over the crossbar.
