Folkestone Invicta 2-2 Hastings United
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 6th August, 2009

A last ditch equaliser from striker Jon Driscoll gave Folkestone Invicta a share of the spoils in Thursday night's 2-2 pre-season friendly draw against Hastings United at the Buzzlines Stadium.

Teenage substitute DRISCOLL stretched Invicta's unbeaten summer run against fellow non-league opposition to six matches with a well-taken lob over goalkeeper Greg Nessling and into the net after being put through down the middle right on the 90 minute mark.

It had looked as though Hastings won win the game after substitute Ade OLORUNDA put them 2-1 up from close range in the 65 th minute when centre half Sean Ray had struck the post from a Lee Carey free kick.

Jimmy Elford's stunning 36 th minute opener for Hastings had earlier been cancelled out a minute later by Michael Yianni.

The bad news for Invicta was captain James Dryden being stretchered off with a knee injury within the opening quarter of an hour.

Dryden, the club's record goalscorer and appearance holder, was ever present for Invicta last season but has now been carried off twice in home pre-season fixtures this summer.

Invicta had gone into the game with new signing David Cory from Whitstable partnering Dryden in attack.

Dryden's injury came when he chased the ball back to contest possession close to the changing rooms as Hastings left back Elford sent a dangerous cross just wide of the far post.

Billy Sommerville came on in midfield, with Yianni pushing forward to partner Cory.

Hastings began to create chances as home goalkeeper Jack Delo made an excellent save to deny Sam Adams in the 28 th minute.

And Adams headed wide from close range following a ball in from the left hand side four minutes later.

ELFORD opened the scoring with a superb 25-ayd strike which flew into the far corner of the net with Delo powerless to do anything about it.

But Invicta were not behind for long as Cory capitalised on a slip by central defender Ray and squared the ball for YIANNI to equalise from close range.

Liam Upton then shot at Delo from outside the penalty area in the 40 th minute.

And the ball was headed off the Invicta line following a Hastings corner at the start of the second half.

Substitute Olorunda then restored Hastings' lead.

Invicta responded as Cory broke down the right hand side of the penalty area but shot wide and was not even rewarded with a corner for his efforts.

A 71 st minute Yianni shot was deflected over the crossbar by Elford when Carey gave the ball away to Jimmy Jackson in midfield.

And Ray blocked a Cory shot inside the penalty area three minutes later.

Left back Josh Burchell was pushed forward into midfield when Invicta made a host of second half substitutions.

And it was Driscoll who came off the bench to find the net.
