Folkestone Invicta 0-2 Kingstonian
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 4th April, 2009

Folkestone Invicta’s three-match winning run came to a halt on Saturday afternoon when they went down to two first half goals at home to Ryman League Division One South leaders Kingstonian.

Invicta did not enjoy the rub of the green as they conceded from a penalty and a deflected shot.

The division’s leading goalscorer Bobby TRAYNOR opened the scoring with a 21st minute spot kick after fellow striker Carl Wilson-Denis had gone down under challenge from Josh Vincent.

And defender Adam THOMPSON made it 2-0 in the 31st minute when his shot on the turn deflected into the net after a ball across from the right hand side of the box.

Invicta’s best chance had come in the 12th minute when captain James Dryden blasted over when he collected a return pass after playing the ball to Josh Burchell on the left who broke down the flank and pulled the ball back.

And midfielder Darren Smith hit the post with a 36th minute shot from 30 yards.

Invicta had gone into the game with James Everitt back in the starting line up in place of the injured Liam Friend (thigh) and striker Jacob Arnold-Smith made his home debut following his hat-trick at Crowborough the previous Saturday.

The versatile Everitt took his place at the heart of the defence following a recent hamstring injury but had to be replaced within half an hour.

Tommy Williams shot over or the visitors with the game’s first chance in the fifth minute when Wilson-Denis laid the ball back.

Dryden then had his clear chance to put Invicta ahead.

But Kingstonian had made a purposeful start as home goalkeeper Jack Delo kept out a x15th minute Dean lodge shot from the left hand side of the penalty area following a slip by James Everitt and Williams shot over from the edge of the penalty area two minutes later.

Williams was at the heart of Kingstonian’s early play and shot at Delo from the right hand side of the penalty area in the 19th minute.

Kingstonian’s penalty rocked Invicta, but the home side responded as Micheal Everitt shot at Kingstonian goalkeeper and captain Luke Garrard from the edge of the penalty area after a Smith ball.

Delo saved from Williams in the 28th minute when Traynor pulled the ball back after James Everitt had gone down on the left.

Everitt had to be replaced by teenager Jon Driscoll and as the home side re-grouped, they found themselves 2-0 down within a minute when Thompson struck.

Arnold-Smith played Vincent in down the right in the 37th minute and the full back advanced into the penalty area and played a low ball across goal, with Dryden just unable to convert in the middle.

Substitute Driscoll fired wide in the 43rd minute after a Jimmy Jackson corner on the right, and centre half Liam Dickson shot over with the very last kick of the first half after another corner on the right.

Goalscorer Thompson was over in the 52nd minute with a free header after a corner from Williams on the left.

Wilson-Denis then shot wide in the 62nd minute after a ball over the middle of the Invicta defence.

At the other end, Lodge blocked a 66th minute Driscoll shot for a corner after a Smith through ball in a counter attack also involving Arnold-Smith and Micheal Everitt.

Kingstonian thought that they had increased their lead a minute later when Simon Huckle thumped the ball into the net after a Liam Collins ball over the defence, but the ‘goal’ was ruled out by an assistant referee’s flag for offside.

Huckle was out of luck again in the 72nd minute when Burchell cleared his header off the line after a Williams corner on the left.

An 83rd minute Traynor cross flashed just in front of Wilson-Denis in a move also involving Collins.

Delo got up to save Collins’ 85th minute deflected shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Late substitutions saw Invicta give a first home appearance to Dan Garrity and a first senior appearance for Peter Williams. Sam Henson was also on the bench for the first time as an unused substitute.

Dryden was just wide with a faint 90th minute touch after a Jackson corner on the right.
