Folkestone Invicta 4-1 Sevenoaks Town
Author: Richard Murrill
Published: 2nd September, 2008

Folkestone Invicta went through Tuesday night’s F. A. Cup Preliminary Round replay against Sevenoaks Town thanks to goals from James Everitt (2), Mark Green and Nick Humphrey and will now play at home to Ramsgate in the next round on Saturday September 13th.

In the end it was a fairly routing victory for the home side after Saturday’s dramatic 4-4 draw, although the Kent League side had again threatened further heroics as they equalised three minutes after Invicta had taken an early lead.

Invicta opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a great header from James EVERITT (right) after a Lee Gledhill cross from the right.

A deep cross from captain Gledhill then came back off the far post as Invicta attacked again two minutes later.

But Sevenoaks again upset the applecart in the 15th minute when captain Andy CONSTABLE equalised by shooting in off the post.

The visitors then enjoyed a good spell as a Chris Walker shot was tipped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Charlie Mitten for the game’s first corner in the 25th minute and striker Constable hit a low shot at Mitten from the subsequent set piece.

But Invicta regained the lead in the 38th minute courtesy of a superb strike from left back Mark GREEN after a move involving Gledhill and James Everitt down the right hand side.

Centre half Liam Friend then headed just over following a 42nd minute corner from Jimmy Jackson on the right.

And Invicta had two clear chances to increase their lead during first half stoppage time as James Everitt shot against a post after being put through and James Dryden headed over after a Jackson cross from the right.

The home side continued to create chances straight after half time as Jackson threatened to walk the ball into the net before a defender cleared for a corner.

And James EVERITT soon made it 3-1 in the 51st minute when a dangerous Humphrey cross from the left flashed across the Sevenoaks goal mouth. The versatile younger Everitt brother was revelling in the attacking role which had also brought him a vital goal in Saturday’s initial tie.

Sevenoaks brought on Saturday’s match-saving hero Dwayne Gibbons and the substitute soon tried his luck again as he shot at Mitten in the 56th minute.

But Invicta put the result beyond all reasonable doubt in the 57th minute when centre half HUMPHREY met a Jackson corner on the right with a spectacular header.

Humphrey (left) threatened again after a 63rd minute Jackson free kick and the home side were desperately close again two minutes later after another Jackson cross from the right.

The ball then somehow stayed out in the 68th minute when strikers Dryden and Everitt couldn’t quite force the ball over the line from close range after a Jackson cross on the left.

A 72nd minute Dryden shot was touched round the post by Sevenoaks goalkeeper Jamie Williams after a Green ball and Humphrey was close again from Jackson’s subsequent corner.

Sevenoaks had further chances of their own as substitute Gibbons’ shot flashed past the post and Steve Evans then shot at Mitten in the 74th minute.

Substitute Marlon Button curled a shot just over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area and an 87th minute cross from Button on the right was headed wide by Constable in the middle.

At the other end, Dryden headed wide when substitute Byron Walker played the ball in from the left after 85 minutes.

There were bookings for Invicta’s Gledhill and for Sevenoaks’ Adrian Griffiths and Tom Olson.

Invicta brought in new signing Lee Spiller for his debut after a five-match suspension and had player-coach Scott Lindsey as an unused substitute on his return to the Buzzlines Stadium.
