Folkestone Invicta moved three points clear at the top of the Ryman League Division One South when they recorded a second 3-1 home victory in four days and overcame Ramsgate on Tuesday night.
There is currently a feelgood factor at the Buzzlines Stadium which is becoming hard to ignore. The Folkestone side has won eight and drawn two of its last ten league matches, is playing with a growing confidence, has started to score goals to go with their excellent defensive record, the terrace support is more vocal than it has been for years and manager Neil Cugley was chosen as the division's Manager of the Month for November.
Almost unbelievable after the dark days of the summer when the club seemed to be heading towards administration and an uncertain future.
The goals on Tuesday night were special as well. Darren Smith opened the scoring with a contender for Invicta's goal of the season, but visiting captain Warren Schulz headed his side level midway through the second half.
Josh Vincent then restored Invicta's lead with another good strike. And substitute Peter Williams increased the lead with a quite extraordinary goal as he ran half the length of the pitch to score when Ramsgate goalkeeper Sam Mott went up for a late free kick and the visitors left their goal completely unguarded and were made to pay by a throw from home goalkeeper Jack Delo.
Invicta went into the game with an unchanged starting line up for an eighth successive match as they faced the challenge of Ramsgate who had proved to be something of a bogey side in the past.
And the home side looked to carry on from where they left off against Burgess Hill on Saturday as Jimmy Jackson's 14 th minute shot was charged down inside the penalty area after captain Micheal Everitt had tried to find a way through.
SMITH then opened the scoring when he received the ball from former Gravesend team mate Jackson and unleashed a stunning 25-yard strike which curled into the top right hand corner of the net via the angle of bar and post.
It was Smith's fifth goal of the season, making him Invicta's top goalscorer so far this season and his second in successive matches. He will have scored few better.
Invicta were again playing well as striker Simon Austin headed at Mott when Micheal Everitt played the ball in and a 19 th minute Jackson shot struck Ramsgate defender James Dolby when Smith turned provider.
Dolby cleared a dangerous 32 nd minute Smith ball in following a good one-two with James Everitt down the right hand side and Micheal Everitt shot over a minute later when he let fly from the edge of the penalty area after receiving the ball from younger brother James.
Ramsgate goalkeeper Mott intercepted a 37 th minute Vincent ball across the visitors' goal following a Jackson pass and then got down to keep out a James Everitt shot from the left hand side of the penalty area.
Another Smith shot was deflected over the crossbar after a well-worked 41 st minute free kick following a handball decision against Dolby and James Everitt headed Smith's subsequent corner over at the far post.
Ramsgate were still in the game but had barely threatened the Invicta goal during the first half, though a dangerous James Gregory free kick from the left was deflected out for a corner by Invicta captain Everitt just before half time.
It had been a typically competitive encounter between these two Kent sides and things briefly threatened to spill over at the start of the second half following a full blooded challenge involving Micheal Everitt and Andy Hadden.
Ramsgate came close to an equaliser in the 51 st minute when Invicta goalkeeper Delo made a point blank save against his former club to push away a close range effort from Schulz following a cross from the left hand side as the visitors won a corner.
But Invicta threatened again as substitute Williams played a 58 th minute ball in from the right hand side of the penalty area just above striking partner James Everitt in the middle and Williams himself shot over the crossbar from the right hand side of the penalty area in a move also involving Vincent two minutes later.
James Everitt then hit a low shot at goalkeeper Mott when he created a 64 th minute chance for himself after a ball from Williams and Smith was close again two minutes later when he warmed the goalkeeper's hands after a Micheal Everitt pass.
But Ramsgate were level in the 70 th minute when SCHULZ headed in a Gregory corner from the right.
Invicta responded as a James Everitt shot was kept out by goalkeeper Mott, only for a goal kick to be awarded when players from both sides lined up for a corner.
And the home side regained their lead in the 76 th minute when VINCENT curled a shot in from the right hand side of the penalty area which goalkeeper Mott could only touch into the far corner of the net (above). The ball had come back out to Vincent after Smith and Josh Burchell had combined down the left hand side following a free kick and the cross was touched away.
Like Smith, Vincent had thus followed up his goal on Saturday with another strike at the same end.
And Invicta's third goal will be talked about for some time as WILLIAMS kept his cool in the 87 th minute to make the points safe when Ramsgate threw all 11 players forward and left nobody back.
Ramsgate goalkeeper-cum-striker Danny Twyman had scored a stoppage time winner at home to Corinthian-Casuals on Saturday, but quite why the visitors threw such caution to the wind this time with over seven minutes to play, including stoppage time, is a question that they must themselves now be asking.
Substitute Twyman headed a Gregory free kick at Delo right at the end of stoppage time, but this was Invicta's night.
Williams had been booked for celebrating his goal, joining Invicta's Vincent and Burchell and Ramsgate's Dolby, Hadden and Sam Jones in referee Gary Croft's notebook.
James Everitt was chosen as Invicta's man of the match by the sponsors for a third successive home match.
Teenager Ashley Easton was on the Invicta substitutes' bench for the first time after scoring four goals for the reserves in their 6-5 defeat away to Lordswood reserves at the weekend.
