Richard Murrill's Season 2000/1 Review

Folkestone Invicta achieved their target of survival in their first Dr Martens League Premier Division side, although it was often a bumpy ride before their late rally kept them safe.

Manager Neil Cugley initially by and large chose to stick by the squad which had won promotion last season, though the addition of former Dover Athletic captain Scott Daniels at centre half was essential at this higher level.

Knowing that he was never going to have as big a squad as the league's leading clubs, Cugley had stressed the need for his side to stay injury-free.

But that side of things was again a problem as experienced defender Lee Palmer picked up a knee injury in a pre-season friendly against Leyton Orient and did not appear for the first team until February and only managed one starting league appearances all season, and he was carried off injured in that game.

Triple Player of the Year and top goalscorer Nicky Dent had missed pre-season training with an achilles injury and broke down during the warm up in the club's opening game of the season at Bath. He was to be out until November. Dent still adds class to the Invicta side and can hold his head up in the exalted company of the Premier Division but it soon became clear that the team couldn't place too higher a reliance on the 33-year-old's natural ability alone at this level.

But Invicta gave a good account of themselves in their opening 2-1 defeat at Bath, with captain Paul Chambers opening the scoring.

Chambers was to score six goals in the opening five games to top the Premier Division goalscoring charts, including a hat-trick in an exhilarating 4-3 win over Cambridge City in the club's opening home game and both goals in a 2-1 win at Moor Green as Invicta recorded their first away win at this level.

Three wins from the opening five matches left Invicta in a healthy league position.

Big goalkeeper Dave Wietecha and experienced centre half Daniels were to excel during the first couple of months of the season.

Crawley's magnificent Broadfield Stadium was to highlight the improved facilities at Premier Division level, but after going a goal ahead through James Dryden, refereeing decisions went against Invicta at Crawley as they eventually crashed 4-1 with both Richard Ponsford and Peter McCann sent off.

Invicta soon found that at this level there is a greater emphasis on physical strength, fitness and tactical awareness. Their honeymoon period came to a crashing end with a 4-0 home defeat against Liam Daish's Havant & Waterlooville side at Cheriton Road in September when Invicta gifted their opponents the opening three goals.

At lower levels a cavalier Invicta side might have been able to afford the luxury of going a couple of goals down before storming back to win at the other end, but goals are harder to come by at this level and conceding soft early goals was to become a problem for Invicta, particularly at home where they were to lose an alarming 11 games.

An F. A. Cup exit against Hastings Town added to the club's woes and a 3-0 home defeat against fellow strugglers Clevedon Town was the low point of a run which saw the club win just one out of 13 league games from the defeat at Crawley at the start of September to a 3-0 reverse at Stafford at the beginning of December.

Invicta's away form was good during the autumn and winter - with draws at Weymouth, King's Lynn, Welling United and Salisbury - but these useful points were often followed by home defeats which took the club back to square one.

Cost-cutting exercises saw the departure of player/joint assistant manager Billy Manuel and loan signing McCann from Barnet, but results picked up during December as Invicta won important home games against both Tamworth and Fisher Athletic (London) and had a comfortable F. A. Trophy win over Worthing.

The New Year's Day trip to high-flying Margate brought out the best in Invicta as they twice led but suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat with the winner coming in the last-minute.

That was to signal to the start of another poor run which also included a home F. A. Trophy exit against King's Lynn.

Invicta found themselves back in the relegation zone when they travelled to meet leaders Burton Albion on a Tuesday night in February, but came home with a magnificent 2-0 victory which was to be Nigel Clough's side only home defeat of the season at Eton Park.

But the club's injury problems were to reach crisis proportions as the win at Burton was followed by a 5-0 drubbing against Newport County on an industrial estate in south Wales. It was difficult to predict just what would happen to Invicta as another makeshift side then went up to Havant & Waterlooville and came away with an emphatic 4-1 win on another excellent Tuesday night excursion.

Midfield had been the weak link in Invicta's side for the past couple of seasons where the lack of fitness of both Chambers and Manuel was always a potential problem against the better sides, though Chambers' goals continue to be an asset and he finished the season as top goalscorer with 16 strikes and also made the most appearances.

Teenager Martin Chandler's first two full games for the club were the against-the-odds wins at Burton and Havant and he added both energy and creativity to this area of the park, where new signings Steve Smith from Hastings Town and Anthony Hogg, on loan, from Dover Athletic were crucial to Invicta's survival during the second half of the season. James Virgo was to add Conference experience whilst on loan at left back.

Popular striker Steve Lawrence suffered a broken leg after a horrendous challenge on him at Merthyr Tydfil.

But Invicta's great spirit was in evidence as they rallied and secured their survival with a season's best run of 13 points out of 15, including an unforgettable 2-2 home draw at home to champions-elect Margate when Invicta had both Dent and Andy Larkin sent off after 28 minutes when they were already a goal down. Right back Andy Morris turned in another exceptional performance and showed once again that he is the man for the big occasions as he was on his way to the Supporters' Player of the Year award.

The return of people's champion Ricky Reina after a six-year absence from the club was to prove another decisive factor in Invicta's survival and Reina's performances over the Easter weekend cemented his already strong bond with spectators. Reina's first goals came as Invicta lost an extraordinary Kent Senior Cup semi final tie 5-4 after extra time away to holders and eventual winners Gravesend & Northfleet.

Other popular players fell by the wayside along the way, namely Ian Hayes and Richard Ponsford, and teenage striker John Ayling endured a frustrating season after seemingly falling out of favour despite the plaudits of the previous season.

But Invicta had other young players to cheer as 21-year-old striker James Dryden enjoyed another good season, 19-year-old left back Darren Winfield emerged from the youth team, 18-year-old Michael Everitt looked more and more like a first team player and 17-year-old Roy Guiver scored his first Premier Division goal and also made his debut starting appearance.

At the other end of the scale, 35-year-old left winger Jeff Ross and 37-year-old utility man Stuart White again showed an excellent example to the younger players on the type of commitment required to succeed at this level.

MARGATE RESERVES 1 FOLKESTONE INVICTA RESERVES 1
After extra time Margate win 4-2 on penalties.

Folkestone Invicta reserves had the Bass Brewers Kent Football League Division One Cup snatched from within their grasp when they lost a dramatic penalty shoot out at Hartsdown Park after Margate reserves had grabbed an injury time equaliser to force extra time.

Invicta had enjoyed the better of the initial 90 minutes and they seemed to have done enough to win last Wednesday night's final when Michael Everitt headed in Dan Smith's cross from the right after 78 minutes. But with echoes of the first team's last ditch defeat at Margate on New Year's Day, the home side equalised with a header from a corner after three minutes of stoppage time through Russell Hughes. And when it came to penalties Invicta left themselves with a mountain to climb when both Farrell Cox and Darren Winfield missed their opening two kicks despite the fact that Margate goalkeeper Marc Smith collapsed in his goalmouth with cramp after the first penalty. Tom Carr did save Margate's third penalty to give Paul Fisk's side some hope, but successful strikes from Dan Fisk and Roy Guiver were not enough as Margate emerged as 4-2 shoot out winners.

Invicta had the ball in the net after just two minutes but Everitt's 'goal' was ruled out for offside after Smith had played the ball in from the right, while Margate went close at the other end three minutes later. There was then controversy as Margate had a goal disallowed after 21 minutes following a foul on goalkeeper Tom Carr and Invicta were denied a penalty after 25 minutes when centre forward Roy Guiver was awarded just a free kick when he went down after running into the area. Tempers flared when Guiver was booked after 33 minutes following a bad challenge. Margate's Dean Yorath was booked right on half time for a foul on John Ovard and Farrell Cox's free kick from the edge of the box struck the crossbar.

Invicta got on top after the interval as they attacked down the slope which still exists at Hartsdown Park and Cox was close within minutes of the re-start. Goalkeeper Smith tipped over an Everitt header from a good Guiver cross from the left after 61 minutes and Invicta again had penalty appeals turned down when Cox went down in the box after 64 minutes. Cox's shot was smothered by Smith after 68 minutes but crawled onto the post and Invicta's Smith forced a corner from his Margate namesake after 72 minutes. Ovard's drilled left wing cross only needed a touch after 75 minutes and a minute later Smith won another corner. It was Smith who beat his man to set up what looked like being Invicta 's winner. Carr made a good save to preserve Invicta's lead after 81 minutes, but there was to be a cruel sting in the tale as even Margate goalkeeper Smith went up for their fateful last-ditch corner.

The first period of extra time saw both sides go close as Margate headed wide after 102 minutes and Ovard brought another save round the post from Smith a minute later. Margate had the better of the second period of extra time as Carr made a good save after 110 minutes and there was another scare in the Invicta goalmouth three minutes later. But Smith was called into action again by Invicta's Guiver and Smith and for the third time on the night Invicta might have had a penalty for an apparent handball with just one minute remaining. But it was to be penalties which decided the issue as the game went on long into the night.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Tom Carr, Justin Lemar (Toby Brazier 85 mins), Darren Winfield, Paul Morris, Leigh Pearce, Michael Everitt, Dan Fisk, Farrell Cox, Roy Guiver, Dan Smith, John Ovard (Craig Maxwell 112 mins). Unused sub: Michael Yianni.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0 STAFFORD RANGERS 3

Folkestone Invicta's first season in the Dr Martens League Premier Division ended with a whimper as they were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Stafford Rangers at Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon. Stafford had beaten Invicta by the same scoreline back in December and became the eleventh visiting side to win at Cheriton Road in the league this season. The visitors thus end the season in the seventh place after winning the Western Division last term, though Invicta had already achieved their aim of avoiding relegation.

All three goals came during the second half on Saturday as Stafford made their territorial advantage count after the interval. Antony Eccleston opened the scoring just a minute after the re-start with an acrobatic volley after Dave Wietecha had saved from striker Joe O'Connor. Darren Shaw made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after 58 minutes following a foul by Stuart White on O'Connor after the stand-in Invicta centre half had initially given the ball away to Craig Lovatt. And having played his part in the opening two goals, O'Connor made it 3-0 after 75 minutes when he chested the ball down and slid it under Wietecha. The visitors could even have added to their tally as Wietecha saved from O'Connor after 76 minutes following an initial save from Shaw when the Stafford midfielder raced through the middle. And Eccleston's header was cleared off the line following a corner after 80 minutes.

Stafford had enjoyed the better of the first half exchanges as Eccleston shot at Wietecha after five minutes and Shaw's shot was blocked by he Invicta goalkeeper when the ball fell to him on the let hand edge of the box after 25 minutes following a move involving O'Connor and Scott Dundas. Dundas just failed to make contact when O'Connor nodded the ball down to him in the 33rd minute and Shaw shot wide a minute later after a move involving Lovatt and O'Connor. Invicta's closest moment to a goal came after 39 minutes when Anthony Hogg shot over from the edge of the box after Ricky Reina had surged down the left hand side of the penalty area. Martin Chandler shot just over during first half stoppage time and Hogg's shot was deflected for a corner after 51 minutes. Invicta's Chandler was the game's only booking when he was cautioned by referee Martin Yerby after 89 minutes.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Virgo, White, Daniels, Hogg, Chandler, Chambers, Reina, Dryden, Smith (Ross 54 mins). Unused subs: Guiver, Everitt.
STAFFORD RANGERS: Williams, Everitt (Jones 85 mins), Jones, Boughey (Thompson 80 mins), Brindley, Simkin, Shaw, Lovatt, O'Connor, Eccleston, Dundas (King 55 mins).

ILKESTON TOWN 3 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0

Folkestone Invicta's five-match unbeaten league run came to a crashing end in their final away game of the season at Ilkeston Town on Saturday afternoon. A run of 13 points from a possible 15 during April had ensured Invicta's Premier Division survival and the fact that they were already safe did take the edge off Saturday's trip to Derbyshire.

Manager Neil Cugley kept the same starting line up which had beaten Crawley Town in midweek to make mathematically sure of staying up. But the visitors were well beaten at the New Manor Ground as Ilkeston became the third side to complete a league 'double' over Invicta this season, following in the footsteps of Bath City and Worcester City. Indeed the Robins must wish they could play Invicta every week as they had not scored three goals in a game for 30 matches since winning 3-1 at Cheriton Road back in November.

The early damage on Saturday was done by right winger Paul Eshelby who had scored twice in that previous encounter at Cheriton Road. It was a foul on Eshelby by Martin Chandler which led to the on-loan David Holmes opening the scoring for Ilkeston from the penalty spot after ten minutes. Left back Darren Winfield blocked from Eshelby as the home side threatened again in the 14th minute. But Invicta were almost level in the 15th minute when Ilkeston goalkeeper Mark Hales touched a James Dryden shot onto the post after he got the better of the home defence from a Winfield ball. It was to be Invicta's only serious effort on goal all afternoon. Eshelby was also involved in the second goal as his low ball in from the right was turned in by striker Carl Wright. Anthony Hogg was booked for a foul on Eshelby after 28 minutes as Invicta struggled to cope with Ilkeston's record signing who has played in the Football League for both Exeter and Scarborough.

Only another inspired performance from goalkeeper Dave Wietecha kept the score down for Invicta after the interval. Wietecha made a great tip over from Holmes' far post header following a cross from James Whitehead after 51 minutes. But the big goalkeeper was given no chance a minute later when centre half Chris Timons let fly to send the ball into the top corner from 30 yards for the goal of the match. It was Timons' first Premier Division strike of the season and he seemed to be a popular choice as Ilkeston's Player of the Year in the clubhouse after the game. Eshelby was wide when he ran onto Emeka Nwadike's ball after 57 minutes.

Invicta replaced youngsters Roy Guiver and Winfield with John Ayling and Jeff Ross after 66 minutes, but Ayling was soon to be replaced by Ricky Reina as his hamstring injury flared up again. Ilkeston were still creating all the chances as Nwadike shot over and Wright put substitute Jamie Clarke's low cross wide. Wietecha made a point blank save from Wright after a low 86th minute cross from the right and saved again from Clarke when fellow substitute Abbott put him through in the closing seconds.

ILKESTON TOWN: Hales, Cox (Abbott 28 mins), Middleton, Timons, McKenzie, Whitehead, Sissons, Nwadike (Clarke 67 mins), Holmes, Wright (Helliwell 86 mins), Eshelby.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, White, Virgo, Winfield (Ross 66 mins), Daniels, Hogg, Chandler, Chambers, Guiver (Ayling 66 mins, Reina 77 mins), Dryden, Smith.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2 CRAWLEY TOWN 1

Folkestone Invicta confirmed their Dr Martens League Premier Division safety when second half goals from Anthony Hogg and James Dryden gave them victory over Crawley Town at Cheriton road on Tuesday night. The win gives Invicta 13 points out of 15 as they are finishing the season with their best run of the campaign.

Hogg has been in good form of late and it was the midfielder who opened the scoring after 52 minutes when he shot home from the left hand edge of the box after good work by Dryden. And it was Dryden who made it 2-0 after 79 minutes when under pressure Crawley goalkeeper Andy Little fumbled the ball from Martin Chandler's right wing cross. The visitors pulled a goal back after 87 minutes when Dean Wordsworth's corner from the left was deflected in seemingly off Leroy Huggins after Invicta goalkeeper had touched Huggins' shot round for a corner.

Without Andy Larkin, Ricky Reina and Nicky Dent, Invicta brought 17-year-old striker Roy Guiver in for his first starting appearance after he had scored for both the reserve and youth teams over the weekend. 19-year-old Darren Winfield came in at left back for only his fourth start and 37-year-old Stuart White was back in the side just two days after finishing the Flora London Marathon in a time of 3 hours 52 minutes. Crawley themselves must have been feeling the effects of playing their fourth game in just six days. But the Newtowners made a bright start as a Wordsworth shot flashed past the post after 10 minutes following a move involving Huggins and Dave Powell. Wietecha saved from both Danny Carroll and Powell on the quarter of an hour mark and Winfield cleared off the line when Powell wanted too much time to shoot in the 22nd minute. Invicta captain Paul Chambers shot over after a marauding 26th minute run through the middle and the home side had their best moment of the first half after 40 minutes when Little turned Dryden's shot round the post for a corner. Debutant Guiver lobbed just wide after 47 minutes, while at the other end Wietecha continued to thwart Crawley when he saved from former Bromley team mate Wordsworth after 50 minutes. Wordsworth was close again after Hogg's opening goal when Wietecha saved again after 55 minutes and the Crawley striker blasted the rebound high and wide. Guiver forced a corner after 77 minutes and Wietecha made another good save moments before Invicta's decisive second goal. Wietecha saved well with his feet to deny Huggins after 82 minutes before Crawley's somewhat bizarre goal. But Invicta could have increased their lead when Chandler's shot from the right came back off the post after 89 minutes.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, White, Virgo, Winfield, Daniels, Hogg, Chandler, Chambers, Guiver (Ross 90 mins), Dryden, Smith. Unused subs: Ayling, Morris.
CRAWLEY TOWN: Little, Payne, Wackett, Doherty, Pullen (Holmes) Ugbah (Hynes 68 mins), Carroll, Anderson, Wordsworth, Huggins, Powell (Collins 78 mins).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 3 MERTHYR TYDFIL 1

Folkestone Invicta made it 10 points out of 12 when two goals from captain Paul Chambers and one from James Dryden gave them a 3-1 victory over Merthyr Tydfil at a sunny Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon.

Chambers opened the scoring after 16 minutes when he headed home a James Virgo corner after goalkeeper Neil Thomas had palmed over a Nicky Dent piledriver when Ricky Reina nodded the ball on. Merthyr were level in the 24th minute thanks to a Darren Ryan penalty after Invicta goalkeeper Dave Wietecha had brought down Justin Perry. Dryden restored Invicta's lead with a well-taken goal in the 33rd minute after a Virgo ball in from the left. The points were made safe after 80 minutes when top goalscorer Chambers was there again to score his 16th goals of the season after Reina had touched on a Dryden ball from the left.

Invicta had created chances from the start as Martin Chandler's shot flashed past the post when a Dent through ball put him in within 60 seconds of the start. Dryden was close from a Virgo ball in after four minutes as Invicta set about their task of getting the three points to all but ensure their survival. Merthyr's best spell of the game came after their equaliser and Colin Loss' shot was blocked for a corner by Invicta centre half Scott Daniels in the 29th minute after an Adrian Needs ball. Invicta had to re-adjust after 36 minutes when centre half Andy Larkin limped off, with Jeff Ross coming on, Dryden dropping back and Virgo moving across to centre back.

An injury to one of the officials saw Invicta accountant and treasurer Bryan Pearce running the line for the second half. The second half brought more chances for the home side as Dent shot against the post after 46 minutes following a flowing move involving both Chandler and Chambers. Thomas saved from Ross after 53 minutes when Chambers put him through and Anthony Hogg fired over when Reina tee-d him up after 66 minutes. Merthyr centre half Gareth Elliott cleared an audacious Chandler chip off the line after 72 minutes when visiting goalkeeper Thomas juggled the ball outside his own penalty area. Chambers was denied a hat-trick when Thomas turned his shot round the post during injury time after a Hogg ball.

There were bookings for Invicta's Daniels, Chambers and Hogg and for Merthyr's Ryan, Dean Clarke and Loss.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Smith, Virgo, Larkin (Ross 36 mins), Daniels, Hogg, Chandler, Chambers, Reina, Dent (Everitt 59 mins), Dryden. Unused sub: White.

GRAVESEND & NORTHFLEET 5 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 4
(After extra time)

Folkestone Invicta lost a dramatic Kent Senior Cup semi final at Stonebridge Road when they went down to a penalty two minutes from the end of extra time in a repeat of last season's final.

Invicta had themselves forced the extra half hour with a James Virgo penalty deep into stoppage time after coming back from 4-1 down. Gravesend had dominated the early exchanges as Invicta right back Andy Morris cleared off the line from Jimmy Jackson after just 30 seconds and Jackson shot just wide after only two minutes following a one-two with the dangerous Che Stodhart. It was Jackson who opened the scoring after 11 minutes when he shot low into the net after another good move involving Stodhart. Invicta were under the cosh and Danny Jeffery was close when he got a touch to a corner after Invicta had cleared the ball off the line again after 17 minutes. There was some respite when Ricky Reina forced a good save from home goalkeeper Darren Smith after 19 minutes when the ball came to him on the right hand side of the box. But it was 2-0 in the 24th minute when Stodhart's delicate chip from the left was nodded in by midfielder Darren Smith.

Invicta began to create chances themselves as Martin Chandler shot wide with a low shot from outside the box after 31 minutes and James Dryden's shot was blocked for a corner two minutes later when Nicky Dent put him through. But the tie appeared to be over when Invicta centre half Andy Larkin let the ball slip under his foot to allow Nick Hegley run clear down the left and cross for Jeffery to nod home and make it 3-0 after 36 minutes.

Hegley forced a corner with a good 25 yard strike after 40 minutes and Invicta goalkeeper Dave Wietecha made an excellent reflex save to deny Stodhart a minute later. But Invicta were thrown a lifeline after 43 minutes when Reina volleyed home his first goal since re-joining the club when Paul Chambers nodded on a Virgo free kick. Gravesend restored their three-goal advantage after 52 minutes when Jeffery's ball in from the left was turned in by Stodhart. Gravesend replaced goalkeeper Smith with the back-from-injury Jamie Turner but Invicta had pulled a goal back within a minute of Stodhart's strike as Reina fired home his second goal of the night. It was 4-3 after 57 minutes when Virgo's free kick was nodded back out and Anthony Hogg found the net with a low shot from outside the area. Wieteche made another good save from a free kick on the edge of the Invicta area after 67 minutes, but Virgo had a free kick saved by Turner after 88 minutes.

There was a final twist when referee Ian Gosling from Ashford awarded Invicta a penalty four minutes into stoppage time for a push on Dryden by Scott Lindsey and Virgo stepped up to equalise with virtually the last kick of normal time. Invicta enjoyed the better of the opening period of extra time and Reina came agonisingly close to putting them ahead for the first time after 103 minutes. But Gravesend dominated the last 15 minutes as Robert Owen shot over. There were changes at both ends after 112 minutes when substitute Roy Guiver nearly put Invicta ahead and Wietecha had to save Hegley's dangerous left wing cross. But a late penalty for the Ryman League Premier Division side saw Jackson settle the issue and thus avoid the tension of a penalty shoot out. There were bookings for Gravesend's Stodhart and for Invicta's Hogg, Chandler and Guiver.

GRAVESEND & NORTHFLEET: Smith (Turner 53 mins), Lee, Jackson, Lindsey, Barnett, Wilkins, Smith, Owen, Jeffery, Stodhart, Hegley. Unused subs: Crawley, Hanford, Spiller, Duke.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris (Guiver 60 mins), Virgo, Larkin, Daniels, Hogg, Chandler (Winfield 86 mins), Chambers, Reina, Dent (Ross 51 mins), Dryden.

FISHER ATHLETIC (London) 1 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2

Two goals from captain Paul Chambers all but ensured Folkestone Invicta's Dr Martens League Premier Division survival as they completed their first league 'double' of the season over now seemingly doomed Fisher at the Surrey Docks Stadium on Easter Monday.

Top goalscorer Chambers scored both the goals to take his tally to 14 for the season as Invicta came from behind to win . But Ricky Reina shared equal top billing as he set up both goals with another performance of awesome power which shows that he is back to his best. Reina's 'never-say-die' attitude and willingness to chase apparently lost causes has always endeared him to supporters. And his sheer persistence was never more in evidence than for Invicta's winning goal as Reina took the ball from defender John Maloney down the left flank and played the ball across for Chambers to score from close range after 70 minutes.

Invicta had forced a succession of early James Virgo corners. But it was Fisher who opened the scoring after nine minutes when former Ashford Town centre half Ross Edwards headed home a corner from the right. Invicta were level just four minutes later when Chambers beat his former Ashford team mate Maurice Munden after Reina had nodded on a James Dryden thrown in from the left. Wayne Grant got down the right hand edge of the Invicta penalty area and shot dangerously across goal. But Invicta were enjoying the better of the first half as Reina lobbed at Munden from a Martin Chandler ball and Munden touched over a Virgo free kick after a handball.

Fisher's need for victory was greater and the home side came out with a real sense of urgency after the interval. Edwards was close again when Ray Powell put the ball in from the right following another corner after 52 minutes. But Invicta also had further chances as Chambers forced a corner at the far post when Reina nodded on another throw in after 58 minutes and Anthony Hogg couldn't quite get enough on Virgo's free kick after Reina had been fouled five minutes later. Sam Tydeman shot just over from outside the penalty area as things became more desperate for Fisher after 81 minutes. And there was a scare for Invicta five minutes into injury time when substitute Lee Bircham hit the post after a one-two between Tydeman and Grant.

There were bookings for Invicta's Virgo and Nicky Dent.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2 MARGATE 2

One of the most remarkable matches at Cheriton Road for years saw nine-men Folkestone Invicta stun league leaders Margate with a sensational second half comeback on Easter Saturday. When Mark Munday opened the scoring for Margate after 25 minutes and Invicta's Nicky Dent and Andy Larkin were both sent off just three minutes later, the outcome appeared to be a formality. But Invicta played better with nine men and were level after 57 minutes when the magnificent Andy Morris beat Lee Turner from the penalty spot after Ricky Reina was held in the box. Morris loves derby occasions such as these and typified Invicta's passion and character during a stirring second half. When Morris put a ball in just ahead of the equally heroic Anthony Hogg's lunge after 62 minutes you began to sense that the impossible might just happen. Three minutes later Morris headed off the line as Phil Collins tried to tee up striking partner Leon Braithwaite. But Invicta fans were delirious after 67 minutes when against all the odds their team went 2-1 up as Martin Chandler got in ahead of Bill Edwards to head home Paul Chambers' lob at the far post. Only a deflection saved the day for Chris Kinnear's Margate as Munday's 81st minute strike went in off little John Keister to leave Invicta defenders distraught. Hogg made a saving tackle to deny Collins after 85 minutes as Invicta survived a tense finale.
Margate had been the better side for the opening half hour and a Collins shot was deflected against the crossbar when a corner wasn't fully cleared as early as the 6th minute. Collins dribbled through the Invicta defence on the quarter of an hour mark before eventually being dispossessed by Larkin. Invicta were hardly in it, but Chambers surged past three challenges through the middle after 23 minutes and Reina's low shot from distance forced a corner from Turner. However it came as no surprise when Margate opened the scoring as Munday's shot from outside the penalty area went in off the crossbar.

Dent showed great skill on the ball before shooting at Turner from James Virgo's ball forward after 27 minutes. But Dent was shown the red card a minute later for a retaliatory elbow to the chest on Graham Porter after being fouled by the Margate right back. And the game looked like degenerating into farce when centre half Larkin was also sent off for comments made to referee Wills from Greenhithe over the incident. It was the fourth time in three years that Invicta had been reduced to nine men and takes their tally of sendings off to eight this season.

The floodgates might have been opened had Margate been awarded what looked like a blatant penalty when Collins was bundled over in the box. But Invicta began to rally and Chambers headed over from Virgo's free kick after 39 minutes. Collins shot wide when Keister put him through after 44 minutes but there seemed no way Margate could fail to win as the two teams went in at half time. But the second half will be talked about for years to come at Cheriton Road. There were bookings for Invicta goalscorers Chandler and Morris and for Margate's Jay Saunders.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Virgo, Larkin, Daniels, Hogg, Chandler, Chambers, Reina (Dryden 86 mins), Dent, White. Unused subs: Ross, Winfield.
MARGATE: Turner, Porter, Keister, Edwards, Williams, Blackford (Marshall 70 mins), Munday, Martin, Braithwaite, Collins, Saunders. Unused subs: Azzopardi, Ponsford

CLEVEDON TOWN 0 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1

Folkestone Invicta took a huge step to securing their Dr Martens League Premier Division survival when a free kick from James Virgo at the end of the first half gave Neil Cugley's side all three points from Saturday's trip to fellow strugglers Clevedon Town. Virgo is renowned for his sweet left foot and when Invicta were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Clevedon box right on half time it was the defender who sent the ball under the diving body of goalkeeper Mark Hervin. It was Virgo's first goal for Invicta since joining the club on a temporary basis from Conference neighbours Dover Athletic during January and it is perhaps one of the most important goals in the club's recent history.

Invicta went into Saturday's crucial relegation battle with big goalkeeper Dave Wietecha back in their ranks after missing six games through injury. But the visitors had to do things the hard way amidst the wind and rain in front of a 428 crowd at the Hand Stadium. Right back Andy Morris went off with a recurrence of his rib injury just before half time to be replaced by Scott Daniels, who himself had to come back a week earlier than expected after missing three games with a stomach muscle injury. And striker Nicky Dent limped off during the second half as his hamstring injury flared up again. Dent has not had much luck back in his native West Country as he had missed the opening game of the season at Bath after pulling up with an achilles injury during the warm up.

Clevedon had the first real chance on Saturday when Steve Lester shot wide with only Wietecha to beat after Paul Milsom had headed the ball on to him. At the other end Dent headed just wide after getting up well to meet a Virgo free kick and another Virgo set piece was blocked by the Clevedon wall in the 25rh minute. The home side had the ball in the net after 37 minutes, but Andy Mainwaring's 'goal' was ruled out for offside after Wietecha had done very well to keep out a Lester header. The home side were dealt a blow when Milsom was stretchered off with a shoulder injury in the 43d minute, to be replaced by young striker Graham McLean. And Virgo's goal deep into first half stoppage time only added to Clevedon's misery after a foul on the hard-working Ricky Reina.

The home side responded after the interval and Wietecha did well to turn away a free kick from Danny Haines, with Matt Coupe firing off target with the rebound. Both sides had further chances during the second half and hit the woodwork as Paul Chambers shot against the post for Invicta when a corner wasn't fully cleared and top goalscorer Mainwaring later struck the Invicta crossbar.

CLEVEDON TOWN: Hervin, Rollo, Haines, Peters, Jefferies, Coupe, Palmer, Harvey, Milsom (McLean), Mainwaring, Lester.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris (Daniels), Virgo, Larkin, White, Hogg, Chandler, Chambers, Reina, Dent (Dryden), Smith. Unused sub: Ross.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 KING'S LYNN 2

Folkestone Invicta suffered their tenth home Premier Division defeat of the season as in-form King's Lynn stretched their unbeaten run to eleven matches by taking all three points at Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon. The visitors were ahead as early as the second minute when Jon Palmer beat Kevin Hudson from the penalty spot after left back James Virgo had pushed debutant striker Zeke Rowe, a deadline-signing for the Linnets from Welling United. Nicky Dent equalised after 57 minutes when he headed home Virgo's free kick from the right at the far post after a foul by Craig Clark on James Dryden. But Palmer restored the visitors' lead with a superb strike from outside the penalty area after 70 minutes following a move involving Kristian Jones and Adie Hayes. The other major talking point was a double sending of after 63 minutes when Invicta's Steve Smith lashed out after being elbowed by another King's Lynn debutant Paul Raynor. Both players were dismissed.

Giving the visitors a goal start was exactly what Invicta did not need. But the home side took the game to King's Lynn in an attempt to retrieve the situation as Anthony Hogg shot at goalkeeper Chuck Martini in the 13th minute and Paul Chambers missed a good chance on the quarter of an hour mark when Dryden broke and squared the ball across to put the captain clean through. Kevin Hudson did well to save Wayne Anderson's 23rd minute shot, but Martini was the busier goalkeeper and made a double save from Dryden in the 25th minute. A well-struck shot from Dent was then well held by Martini in the 39th minute. Chambers had a shot deflected over the crossbar for a corner after 52 minutes and Dent's equaliser sent up a rousing second half. Dent forced a corner within a minute of levelling the scores and Moroccan goalkeeper Martini continued his virtuoso display by picking a Chambers shot out of the air following more trickery from Dent inside the penalty area after 61 minutes. Dent headed wide at the far post following a good move involving Virgo, Martin Chandler and Stuart White after 69 minutes. But Palmer's second goal a minute later came like a bolt out of the blue for the home side.

The best chances in the closing stages fell to the visitors as Palmer was denied a hat-trick first by a superb save at the far post from Hudson after 73 minutes and then by an upright after 81 minutes when he let fly from the left hand edge of the box. Substitute Tommy Wright was also close when the former Leeds, Leicester and Oldham man's shot flashed past the Invicta post after 88 minutes when Anderson put him through. There were bookings for Invicta's Hogg and Chandler and for King's Lynn's Kristian Jones.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Hudson, Morris, Virgo, Larkin (Ross 76 mins), White, Hogg, Chandler (Ayling 83 mins), Chambers, Dryden, Dent, Smith. Unused sub: Everitt.
KING'S LYNN: Martini, Dakin, Clark, Robinson, Fuff, Raynor, Anderson, Hayes, Rowe, Jones (Wright 72 mins), Palmer. Unused subs: Puttnam, McNeill.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0 BURTON ALBION 2

Folkestone Invicta's hopes of an unlikely double over championship-chasing Burton Albion were dashed when they conceded two soft first half goals at Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon.

The Brewers opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Aaron Webster did well to slot the ball past ten Invicta players when an indirect free kick inside the home penalty area was touched to him. The free kick had been awarded when goalkeeper Kevin Hudson could only pick up Andy Larkin's back pass when dangerous striker Dale Anderson looked like getting in behind the Invicta centre half. Worse was to come when it became 2-0 after 38 minutes when Hudson appeared to be impeded and as the ball slipped from his gasp Stuart White belted it off the line, only for the ball to cannon back off helpless fellow defender Andy Morris and into the Invicta net.

The Brewers had made all the early running as captain Darren Stride headed at Hudson in the 2nd minute when David Rennie's crossfield ball found Webster on the left and the Invicta goalkeeper saved from Pat Lyons after ten minutes. Invicta's best chance of the first half came on the half hour mark when James Dryden shot wide when captain Paul Chambers surged through and tee-d him up after a good move also involving Ricky Reina and Martin Chandler. Burton's Webster had the ball in the net again in the 50th minute but this time nobody else had touched the indirect free kick after Morris had checked Anderson on the right hand edge of the box. Invicta rallied as Burton goalkeeper Matt Duke saved Dryden's good shot on the turn after 62 minutes and Anthony Hogg's 20-yard shot was deflected for a corner after 75 minutes. But Burton were close once again when substitute Phil Starbuck shot against the post when Webster played him in after a well-worked move in the 79th minute and Anderson's rebound was blocked.

There were bookings for Invicta's Larkin (pulling down Anderson after 24 minutes), Chambers (kicking out after 34 minutes), Ricky Reina (late tackle on Darren Wassall after 36 minutes) and White (foul after 66 minutes) and for Burton's Wassall (disputing a goal kick decision after 21 minutes) and substitute Gary Crosby (dissent after 90 minutes).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Hudson, Morris, Virgo, Larkin, White (Ross 68 mins), Hogg, Chandler (Everitt 83 mins), Chambers, Reina, Dryden, Smith. Unused sub: Winfield.
BURTON ALBION: Duke, Rennie, Henshaw, Glasser., Wassall, Kavanagh, Stride (Davies 79 mins), Anderson (Crosby 83 mins), Moore, Lyons (Starbuck 60 mins), Webster.

. FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2 DORCHESTER TOWN 0

There were huge sighs of relief all round as Folkestone Invicta won Tuesday night's crucial relegation battle with Dorchester Town amidst the wind, rain and snow at Cheriton Road. The goals came midway through the second half from midfielders Paul Chambers and Martin Chandler in a match Invicta simply had to win. Top goalscorer Chambers got the all-important first goal after 67 minutes when he shot home at the second attempt after James Virgo's corner had skidded across the wet surface. Captain Chambers was involved again as Invicta added a superb second goal just four minutes later. The Invicta captain was played in by hard-working striker Ricky Reina, skipped past two challenges down the left and sent the ball across for teenager Chandler to open his account for the club at the far post.

The Magpies did have chances to get themselves back into the game as Andy Sargent chipped at Kevin Hudson when put through after 75 minutes and Martyn Sullivan was denied by Hudson's feet two minutes later. But Chambers missed with two good chances to increase Invicta's lead during the final minute.|

With the wind at their backs, Invicta began to create the more chances after the interval as Andy Larkin was close at the far post from a corner after 47 minutes and fellow centre half Andy Morris burst through and shot at goalkeeper Mark Ormerod after 66 minutes. There had been few clear chances during the first half in a game played amidst appalling conditions throughout. Chambers headed wide across goal with Invicta's first real chance after 29 minutes and Reina shot low at goalkeeper Ormerod after 44 minutes. At the other end Sullivan battled through the middle and shot low at Hudson in the 13th minute and Matty Holmes chipped tamely over the crossbar on the half hour mark.

There were bookings for Invicta's Anthony Hogg (rash 60th minute challenge on Holmes) and Stuart White (late tackle after 87 minutes) and for Dorchester's Sullivan (dissent after 76 minutes) and Andy Harris (retaliation after 87 minutes).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Hudson, Morris, Virgo, Larkin, White, Hogg (Everitt 81 mins), Chandler, Chambers (Winfield 90 mins), Reina (Ross 83 mins), Dryden, Smith.
DORCHESTER TOWN: Ormerod, Jermyn, Harris, Ferrett (Groves 83 mins), Impey, Gittens, Lonnon, Sullivan, Murray, Sargent, Holmes. Unused subs: White, Oldbury.

MERTHYR TYDFIL 2 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0

Folkestone Invicta went down 2-0 in Saturday's relegation battle away to Merthyr Tydfil amidst the light snow of Panydarren Park in an often acrimonious match in Wales. To make matters worse, striker Steve Lawrence suffered a broken leg and will miss the rest of the season. Lawrence was only on the field for five minutes after replacing hamstring victim Nicky Dent in the 55th minute, but was involved in two explosive incidents before being stretchered off following a horrendous challenge by big centre half Graham Abraham.

The touchpaper was lit within a minute of Lawrence's arrival as a second half substitute when the striker collided with home goalkeeper and captain Neil Thomas with a challenge which incensed the Merthyr team who surrounded Lawrence, with punches appeared to be thrown. No further action was taken then by referee Kevin Johnson from Bristol. But within minutes, however, giant defender Abraham had executed his own retribution with a vicious swing at Lawrence close to the half way line and incredibly escaped with just a yellow card. Invicta's Andy Morris was also booked for comments made to referee Johnson as Lawrence was stretchered off. There had been a flare up within ten minutes of the re-start after the interval and Merthyr goalkeeper Thomas had confronted Dent towards the end of the first half after a late challenge had left a home defender collapsed in a heap.

But the Martyrs won the game with goals in each half on a good playing surface to ease their own relegation worries. Danny Carter opened the scoring after 32 minutes when he shot home when Invicta couldn't get the ball clear from a free kick after Anthony Hogg was booked for bringing his man down on the half way line as Merthyr broke. The goal inspired the home side and Invicta goalkeeper Kevin Hudson made two good saves during first half stoppage time to deny both Carter and Grant Thomas. The visitors were unlucky when Dent's spectacular shot on the turn came back off the crossbar in the 50th minute. But it was soon 2-0 when Justin Perry headed against the crossbar at the other end after 51 minutes, the ball broke loose and Michael Regan's low ball back in from the right was turned into his own goal by James Virgo.

The Lawrence incident left an ugly taste, though fortunately things did calm down after that. Hudson had to touch a stray cross-cum-shot from the left onto and over the crossbar in the 70th minute, while at the other end Thomas turned Ricky Reina's shot round the post for a corner after 75 minutes. With Steve Smith acting as an emergency striker, it was desperation time for Invicta but substitute James Dryden did go close from a corner during injury time. But the home side had done enough to win and Abraham nearly scored at the far post with what would have added insult to injury for Invicta. Hudson also had to make a double save deep into injury time to prevent a third Merthyr goal.

With Reina, captain Scott Daniels and Paul Chambers back in the starting line up, Invicta had made an encouraging start and Virgo forced the game's first corner with an audacious 35 yard chip which nearly embarrassed goalkeeper Thomas after just five minutes. Daniels became the game's first booking when he held his man down as he tried to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick after 24 minutes. And Invicta had to re-adjust when Daniels went off with a stomach muscle injury two minutes later. Merthyr's Thomas (kicking the ball away after 65 minutes) and Invicta's Reina (late 87th minute challenge on Thomas) were also booked.

MERTHYR TYDFIL: N. Thomas, Regan (Ryan 73 mins), Price, Carter, Abraham, Philpott, Needs, Clarke, Perry, G. Thomas, King. Unused subs: Griffiths, Giles.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Hudson, Morris, Virgo, Larkin, Daniels (Dryden 26 mins), Hogg, Chandler, Chambers, Reina, Dent (Lawrence 54 mins, White 62 mins), Smith.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 WORCESTER CITY 2

Worcester City completed a league 'double' over Folkestone Invicta this season when they came away from Cheriton Road with a 2-1 victory despite having goalkeeper Danny McDonnell sent off after 23 minutes for handling outside his penalty area. McDonnell was dismissed when he slid out to challenge James Dryden to Nicky Dent's through ball and after consulting one of his assistants, referee Mick McCoy applied the letter of the law and ignored Worcester's furious protests to give McDonnell his marching orders. Worcester's most experienced player Ian Cottrill reluctantly donned the goalkeeper's jersey, but was to have a good game between the posts. And, ironically, it was during the first half stoppage time caused by those protests that the visitors opened the scoring when leading goalscorer Mark Owen flicked the ball home after a stray headed back pass from Invicta captain Andy Larkin.

Invicta equalised after 53 minutes when striker Dryden headed in James Virgo's corner from the right after stand-in goalkeeper Cottrill had palmed over a 25 yard shot from Martin Chandler, who was making his full home debut after impressing in the away wins at Burton and Havant. But Worcester restored their lead just three minutes later when Carl Heeley headed home after Andy Bradley had headed the ball back at the far post from Andy Ellis' right wing cross. Stand-in custodian Cottrill secured the points for the Faithfuls by saving from substitute Jeff Ross after 86 minutes and Dryden deep into stoppage time. But the Worcester strikers had given the Invicta defence a difficult afternoon and substitute Mike Wyatt had three late chances to increase the visitors' lead. Worcester had enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges as Owen saw his shot come back off the post in the 7th minute.

There were first half bookings for Invicta's Chandler (7th minute foul on Heeley) and Worcester defender Paul Carty (dissent after 28 minutes).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Hudson, Morris, Virgo, Larkin, Everitt (White 80 mins), Chandler, Hogg, Smith (Chambers 64 mins), Dryden, Dent, Winfield (Ross 52 mins).
WORCESTER CITY: McDonnell, Carty, Greenman, Bradley, Heeley, Weir, Lutz, Ellis, Owen (Wyatt 72 mins), Shepherd (Burrow 87 mins), Cottrill. Unused sub: Tucker.

HAVANT and WATERLOOVILLE 1 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 4

Folkestone Invicta recorded their biggest league win of the season when they came back from Hampshire with a resounding 4-1 victory after Tuesday night's game at a very wet West Leigh Park on Tuesday night. Invicta led 2-0 at half time thanks to goals from fit-again right back Andy Morris and young striker James Dryden and there were second half goals for midfielder Anthony Hogg and substitute Roy Guiver, both opening their accounts for the first team.

This game will be best remembered for the atrocious conditions as the heavy rain throughout the game left big puddles all over the pitch and reduced much of the second half to a farce. With the game beyond them at 0-3, Havant were urging referee Paul Hammick from Hampshire to abandon the game, which would have been a cruel blow to an Invicta side desperate for the points. But the referee was clearly determined that the match would be completed and Invicta were due a bit of luck in that department after losing 1-0 at Dorchester on an equally unplayable surface back in February.

Invicta went into the game with another makeshift side. Dover Athletic's stand-in custodian Kevin Hudson made his first appearance of the season in place of injured goalkeeper Dave Wietecha. In front of him was a new-look defence missing the injured trio of Scott Daniels, Lee Palmer and Richard Ponsford. Stand-in captain Andy Larkin was back in the side and put in a great performance against the in-form veteran David Leworthy in a central defensive three with James Virgo and Stuart White. Morris' return at right back was a bonus, while 19-year-old Darren Winfield came in for his full Dr Martens League debut at left back. Injuries to midfielder Steve Smith and striker Ricky Reina and a bout of bronchitis for striker Steve Lawrence further weakened an Invicta squad who for the second successive away game could only name two substitutes. But the return of teenage midfielder Martin Chandler and striker Nicky Dent added a touch of quality and creativity to the Invicta side.

The visitors thought that they had opened the scoring as early as the 2nd minute when Michael Everitt picked Dent out from the right, but the 'goal' was ruled out by a linesman's flag. Havant responded as Dave Wakefield's 4th minute shot flashed across the Invicta goal and Hudson did well to tip former Dover and Fisher man Timmy Hambley's 7th minute free kick over the crossbar as the home side forced the game's first corner. Invicta opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Morris crowned his returned by slotting the ball home after it had been played back form the right hand side of the box. There was almost an instant reply as Jamie O'Rourke squared the ball back to Paul Wood, but Invicta got bodies in the way to block the shot and the home side themselves had a 'goal' ruled out by a linesman's flag in the 22nd minute. Hambley was close again when his well-struck 41st minute free kick struck the crossbar after a handball decision. But Invicta were given breathing space with a superb 44th minute goal when Everitt dispossessed David Wakefield in the right back position, found Dent who turned and sent a great ball out left to Dryden who executed a clinical low finish across goal.

Havant were unbeaten at home in the league since September but their chances of saving the day were reduced by the farcical conditions during the second half. The home side forced a couple of corners at the start of the second half and wood shot over in the 49th minute. Wood worked his way through the Invicta defence to force a 60th minute corner, but with only the visitors' second corner of the game White played the ball in from the right and Hogg opened his account for the club with a glorious finish into the top corner to make it 3-0. Chandler picked Guiver out after 78 minutes but his short deflected for a corner. The pa announcer also put the referee under pressure by declaring the situation a farce and it was all too much for Havant's player-manager Liam Daish who demonstrated his frustrations with a crude challenge on 18-year-old Everitt after 80 minutes which brought about the game's only yellow card. It could easily have been a red one.

Havant finally worked their way through to score courtesy of Taylor after 86 minutes. It was Taylor's first league goal since Havant won 4-0 at Cheriton Road back in September, and the former Bashley striker has now scored in all four games he has played against Invicta over the past three seasons. But the visitors were to have the final say when first Guiver and then the Havant defence were beaten by the puddles before Guiver recovered to round off an excellent night for the club. It was his first goal at this level after a hatful for both the youth and reserve teams.

HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE: Nicholls, Anstey, Wakefield, Cook, Gale (Connolly 77 mins), Daish, Wood, Hambley, O'Rourke (Taylor 60 mins), Leworthy (Blake 60 mins), Champion.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Hudson, Morris, Winfield, Larkin, Virgo, Hogg, Everitt, Chandler, Dryden (Guiver 69 mins), Dent (Ross (88 mins), White.

NEWPORT COUNTY 5 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0

Folkestone Invicta were brought back down to earth when they suffered their biggest defeat of the season with a 5-0 hammering in at the Newport Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After recording their best win of the season with their midweek heroics at leaders Burton Albion, a depleted Invicta side found themselves 4-0 down at half time in south Wales. And to complete the quirky turnaround, Burton recovered form their midweek disappointment to win 2-1 at home to Conference high-flyers Yeovil Town to reach the quarter finals of the F. A. Umbro Trophy. It truly is a funny old game.

Missing from the win at Burton were injured defenders Lee Palmer and Andy Larkin, which left Invicta vulnerable at the back, and both midfielder Martin Chandler (representing West Ham at Under 19 level) and striker Nicky Dent, which took away much of the side's creativity. And when captain Scott Daniels limped off with a hamstring injury after 29 minutes it meant that Invicta were missing their five first choice defenders. By then the visitors were already 2-0 down and with goalkeeper Dave Wietecha clearly limping with a knee injury the writing was on the wall for Neil Cugley's side. After a nondescript opening quarter of an hour, Newport suddenly found themselves 2-0 up. Garry Shephard fired home Gary Thorne's deep cross from the left after 16 minutes to open the scoring. And teenager Nathan Davies made it 2-0 after 19 minutes when he beat James Virgo to a looping ball virtually on the Invicta goal line after Matthew Rose had found Shephard on the right when Newport broke after an Invicta attack.

Invicta had gone into the game with Stuart White partnering Daniels at centre half, with Michael Everitt at right back and the returning Virgo at left back. Daniels' injury led to another re-shuffle as Darren Winfield came on at left back, Virgo moved up to left midfield, Anthony Hogg dropped back to centre half and Jeff Ross moved into the centre of midfield. Within a minute of Daniels' exit it was 3-0 as Carl Dale lobbed home a pass from striking partner Shephard. And Newport made it 4-0 during first half stoppage time when Hogg got caught out at the back and Shephard fired home.

Virgo switched to centre half for the second half, with Hogg moving back up to midfield and Ross taking up his familiar position on the left flank. Invicta rallied somewhat after the interval as the game petered out, but Wietecha had to come out to deny Shephard a hat-trick after 58 minutes when Virgo could only head the ball into the striker's path. Gary Kemp completed the scoring after 66 minutes when he headed home a corner which had been won on the right by Dale. Invicta's only real serious effort on goal came after 80 minutes when James Dryden forced a corner from goalkeeper Pat Mountain. The injured Wietecha came out to save from substitute Chris Bale after 89 minutes following Davies' ball over the Invicta defence. Invicta's Steve Smith was the game's only booking after a 61st minute flare up with Rose.

NEWPORT COUNTY: Mountain, Robison, Benton, Davies, Kemp, Thorne, Rose (Bale 75 mins), Hill (Beckett 82 mins), Dale, Shephard, James (Hall 59 mins).
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, White, Virgo, Everitt, Daniels (Winfield 29 mins), Hogg, Ayling, Smith, Lawrence (Guiver 82 mins), Dryden, Ross.

BURTON ALBION 0 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2
Folkestone Invicta enjoyed their best win of the season on Tuesday night when goals from strikers Nicky Dent and Steve Lawrence ended leaders Burton Albion's unbeaten home record in the Premier Division at Eton Park. There were heroes all over the pitch for Neil Cugley's side as centre backs Andy Larkin and Scott Daniels were a tower of strength and James Dryden proved to be an unlikely defensive hero at left wing back after Lee Palmer went off with a knee injury following a bad by Phil Starbuck as early as the 13th minute. Steve Smith and Anthony Hogg battled away tenaciously in midfield, where debutant Martin Chandler and substitute Michael Everitt combined very well during the second half. Nigel Clough's Burton had most of the chances, but when Invicta did get a sight of goal their finishing was clinical in front of the watching Clough senior.

Dent opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a goal of real quality when he took the ball down and planted it into the top corner after an outstanding pass from Lawrence. And it was Lawrence who made it 2-0 when teenager Chandler showed great vision to pick him out first time after 50 minutes in a move also involving Smith and Hogg. Invicta needed goalkeeper Dave Wietecha to have a good game to have any chance in this fixture and the big man did not let them down with former Nottingham Forest striker Phil Starbuck's 25th minute header after Aaron Webster's left wing cross.

A lovely playing surface greeted Invicta, but they were soon in the wars as Dent picked up an early knock and Palmer was forced out of the action. When the injured Dent was replaced by teenager Everitt at half time, Invicta left the hard-working Lawrence to battle away on his own up front and at time had 10 men behind the ball to hold on to their lead. Dent's opener gave Invicta something to cling onto and they held on until half time as Larkin got in the way of Pat Lyons' piledriver after 33 minutes and Wietecha saved from both Christian Moore and Lyons before the interval. Lawrence needed treatment during first half injury time after a heavy challenge from Darren Wassall but was to carry the fight to the Brewers after the interval.

Terry Henshaw headed wide from a corner after 48 minutes as Burton made a purposeful start to the second half, but Lawrence's goal gave Invicta just the cushion they needed. Burton brought on striker Dale Anderson for defender Jason Kavanagh but could not find a way through Invicta's stubborn resistance. Wietecha made another good save to deny Starbuck again after 66 minutes and Starbuck shot over with a god chance after 75 minutes when Webster's left wing cross fell to him at the far post. Lyons was inches wide when the ball was nodded back to him after 78 minutes, but this was not to be Burton's night. There were bookings for Burton's Henshaw and Invicta's Everitt and Lawrence.

BURTON ALBION: Duke, Kavanagh (Anderson 52 mins), Henshaw, Glasser, Blount (Rennie 45 mins), Wassall, Stride, Starbuck (Holmes 84 mins), Moore, Lyons, Webster.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, White, Palmer (Ross 12 mins), Larkin, Daniels, Hogg, Chandler, Smith, Lawrence, Dent (Everitt 45 mins), Dryden. Unused sub: Guiver.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 WEYMOUTH 2

Two Weymouth goals in the opening quarter of an hour gave Folkestone Invicta too much to do as they went down 2-1 at Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon. The Terras opened the scoring the eighth minute in bizarre circumstances as Matthew Hale scored direct from the games first corner. And it was soon 2-0 in the 13th minute when former Exeter City striker Darren Rowbotham headed home brother Jason's 13th right wing cross in a move started from the Terras' second corner.

Invicta already found themselves in the position of chasing the game again, but they nearly found a much-needed lifeline when striker James Dryden headed at goalkeeper Danny Potter in the 17th minute when Stuart White's right wing cross presented him with a chance. James Virgo brought another save from Potter after Steve Lawrence's ball in and centre half Andy Larkin headed over on the half hour mark when Nicky Dent met Virgo's corner. A minute later Dent's shot cannoned off Dryden and into Potter's hands as the rub of the green continued to desert Invicta in front of goal.

Jeff Ross replaced Virgo on the left flank at half time, but Weymouth were nearly 3-0 up just after half time when Mark Gammon slid the ball just wide of the post. White shot just wide of the post when Dent put him through in a move started by Steve Smith after 51 minutes, while at the other end Gammon shot just over from Darran Rowbotham's ball. There continued to be chances at both ends as Dryden brought another save from Potter after 58 minutes and Rowbotham's shot was deflected away to safety. But Invicta were enjoying a good second half and Larkin headed inches wide from Ross' 70th minute corner.

Things were not going the home side's way and Potter made a truly outstanding save to keep out Dent's 73rd minute shot when Anthony Hogg found Ross on the left flank. Jason Rowbotham threatened to add insult to injury for Invicta when he shot wide after 82 minutes from Michael Dean's ball. An earlier goal from Invicta could have set up a grandstand finish, but they had to wait until the 88th minute for Dent to score with an overhead kick at the far post after Lawrence had nodded on a Ross corner.

Making his debut for Invicta was wholehearted left sided defender John Farley, on loan from Welling United.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, White, Virgo (Ross 45 mins), Larkin, Daniels, Hogg, Dryden (Ayling 70 mins), Smith, Lawrence, Dent, Farley. Unused sub: Palmer.
WEYMOUTH: Potter, Hare (Hutchinson 41 mins), Hale (Browne 63 mins), Davies, Waldock, Cross, J. Rowbotham, Dean, D. Rowbotham (Phillips 81 mins), Laws, Gammon.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 3 ERITH & BELVEDERE 2

Folkestone Invicta went through to the semi finals of the Kent Senior Cup when an 85th minute winner from Nicky Dent finally broke the resistance of Eastern Division opponents Erith & Belvedere at Cheriton Road on Tuesday night. Dent controlled a cross from the left and smashed the ball into the roof of the net to settle the issue despite some late pressure from Erith which kept home supporters on their toes until the final whistle.

The visitors had opened the scoring after 40 minutes when Steve White received the ball with his back to goal inside the penalty area, wrong-footed two defenders and fired the ball past Dave Wietecha from ten yards. But Invicta were not behind for long as Steve Smith opened his account for the club just two minutes later when he sent the ball into the top corner of the net.

The home side brought on substitutes Jeff Ross and Martin Chandler at half time for Lee Palmer and James Virgo. Ross and Chandler (are they 'Friends'?) may be at different ends of their respective careers but both played their part as Invicta won through during the second half. It was Ross who put Invicta ahead after 55 minutes when his drive from the left went past goalkeeper Dean Lee. Home goalkeeper Wietecha had made a brave save at the start of the second half, while at the other end James Dryden headed against the post when Anthony Hogg found Ross out wide on the left. Invicta were in control of the game but could not quite shake their opponents off.

Kevin Spriggs was left unmarked in the penalty area to slide the ball home to make it 2-2 in the 78th minute. Dent was booked for arguing with the referee straight after Erith's equaliser, but soon set up striking partner Dryden who could not control the ball with the goal beckoning, his first mistake in an otherwise almost faultless display. But Dent was to have the final say with his late winner after missing Saturday's game at Dorchester through suspension.

The early chances had all fallen to the home side as Dryden shot wide and Steve Lawrence was tackled inside the penalty area when lining up his shot. The first real chance came after 20 minutes when Lawrence shot against the crossbar from Smith's ball after Dent had played the ball out to Dryden on the left. At the other end Martin Driscoll headed wide from a corner after 26 minutes and Jamie Kempster headed wide with a very similar chance nine minutes later. Smith and Dent were close with speculative long range efforts for Invicta, but there was a scare at the other end as centre half Andy Larkin cleared off the line when Dave Fisher took the ball round Wietecha.

DORCHESTER TOWN 1 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0

Folkestone Invicta came back from Dorchester wondering quite how they had lost Saturday's relegation battle after dominating the second half on a mudheap of a pitch after going a goal down after just 13 seconds.

Invicta's day started to go against them when their coach driver took a wrong turning via Portsmouth and Southampton which meant that the team arrived at the Avenue Stadium at 2.50pm, with the kick off put back until 3.15pm. With the middle of the pitch totally engulfed in mud, the match was in doubt right up until kick off and should really have been called off. As it was Invicta kicked off, the ball stuck in the mud as the visitors played the ball back and Dorchester nipped in for Matt Groves to find stand-in captain Owen Pickard who scooped the ball past Dave Wietecha to give the Magpies a sensational start. It is Pickard's testimonial season at Dorchester this season and he can surely never have scored a quicker goal.

The wind and rain made the conditions even more difficult for both sets of players. Playing against the wind, Invicta nearly fell further behind after ten minutes when Pickard shot against the post after receiving the ball from Chris Ferrett. Neil Cugley's side went into the game without suspended striker Nicky Dent and had captain Paul Chambers missing for the first time this season with knee ligament trouble.

Stuart White was back after work commitments abroad to replace injured right back Andy Morris. Captain for the day was left winger Jeff Ross, a day after his 35th birthday. Newcomer Steve Smith battled away in the mudheap of the middle of the park and fed Ross whose low shot across goal was saved by goalkeeper Mark Ormerod. Playing with 10-men for a while as Anthony Hogg received treatment, Invicta had to make another change when left back Richard Ponsford limped off with knee ligament trouble on the half hour mark. That marked the introduction of the experienced Lee Palmer for his first appearance of the season as substitute.

Dave Wietecha made a save from Marcus Oldbury as the Invicta defence couldn't get the ball away after 32 minutes, while Steve Lawrence's shot flashed across the Dorchester goal after 43 minutes. Invicta camped in the Dorchester half after the interval as Lawrence battled through the mud and shot at Ormerod after 51 minutes and striking partner James Dryden lobbed over from Wietecha's big 65th minute kick. As Invicta pressed for an equaliser, the ball ran away from Dryden when centre half Andy Larkin played the ball into the area after 68 minutes. Ormerod turned round James Virgo's 40 yard free kick in the 84th minute and a minute later centre half Scott Daniels headed just wide as Invicta got closer and closer to an equaliser. But when Dryden curled a 90th minute shot against the crossbar it just confirmed that this was not to be the visitors' day.

DORCHESTER TOWN: Ormerod, Sullivan, Ferrett, White, McIver, Morris, Oldbury, Groves, O'Hagan, Pickard, Jermyn. Unused subs; Cannie, Evans, Whalley.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2 HALESOWEN TOWN 1

Striker James Dryden was the toast of the town on Saturday as his goal after 63 minutes gave Folkestone Invicta victory in their crucial relegation battle against fellow strugglers Halesowen Town at Cheriton Road.

After five straight defeats in all competitions during 2001, you got the impression that this was a match Invicta simply had to win if they are to go on and retain their Premier Division status. But things were not going to plan as the visitors led 1-0 after an uninspiring first half.

The game was to turn on a 62nd minute penalty decision when Dryden was pushed after a left wing ball in from fellow substitute Jeff Ross. Left back Richard Ponsford stepped up to bring his side level from the penalty spot. It was only Ponsford's second league goal of the season, the first being a late equaliser from a free kick when these two sides drew 4-4 in the Midlands back in November.

And Invicta were 2-1 up within two minutes when Dryden applied an assured finish to Nicky Dent's excellent through ball. The relief was clear for all to see as manager Neil Cugley celebrated the goal on the sidelines.

Dryden, who celebrates his 21st birthday on Sunday, had come on within minutes of the second half in place of right bank Andy Morris who went down clearly in pain and was stretchered away to hospital with a suspected broken rib.  Captain Paul Chambers limped off in the 55th minute to be replaced by Ross as Invicta were in the wars.

On a very wet pitch this was perhaps never going to be a pretty match, especially given its obvious importance to both clubs. In the early exchanges, Leslie Hines fired over from the edge of the Invicta box in the 11th minute, while at the other end Chambers chipped over from a Steve Lawrence ball.

But it was the Yeltz who opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Ross Collins headed in Steve Piearce's ball in from the right. Collins was to limp off ten minutes later after giving his side just the start they had wanted.

The penalty decision was just the break the home side needed and Dryden's goal soon afterwards put a completely different perception on the game. Halesowen kept the result in doubt until the final whistle as Richard Crisp shot just wide after 85 minutes and Piearce's shot flew wide during injury time.

But teenage substitute John Ayling made a couple of useful contributions when he replaced debutant Steve Smith after 85 minutes. And Dent was denied by goalkeeper Andrew Quy when he went close down the right after Ayling's 90th minute ball.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris (Dryden 49 mins), Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, Virgo, Hogg, Chambers (Ross 55 mins), Lawrence, Dent, Smith (Ayling 85 mins).

WORCESTER CITY 2 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0

Two goals midway through the second half meant that Folkestone Invicta came back from Worcester with nothing to show for their efforts on Saturday afternoon. Invicta's stubborn resistance was broken in the 65th minute by a blast from the past just when they seemed on course for the 0-0 draw which would have suited them just fine.

But up popped former Dover Athletic striker Micky Cotter to score his first league goal for the Faithfuls and end the home side's barren run of eight hours of football without a goal. Cotter joined Worcester from Tamworth during the autumn after re-locating to the Midlands for a long non-league career in Kent which also saw a spell with Gravesend & Northfleet.

His name crops up each year at the time of the Malcolm Welsh Memorial Shield as it was his goal which settled the first of the annual inaugural contest in Dover's favour against the old Folkestone club as far back as 1989.

The first goal on Saturday became increasingly likely to settle the issue. And it came when Cotter pounced to squeeze the ball home after stand-in Invicta goalkeeper Kevin Readings had made a fine save from Steve Lutz, but the ball slipped out just when he seemed to have averted any danger.

The home side had drawn six of their previous 12 home matches this season and were under pressure to deliver the goods after two players had been placed on the transfer list and the others told that they could follow unless results improved. They made it 2-0 after 78 minutes when midfielder Lutz headed in Ian Cottrill's left wing cross at the far post.

With goalkeeper Dave Wietecha (knee injury) adding to Invicta's absentee list which already included Andy Larkin (suspended), Stuart White (work commitments abroad), Nicky Dent and Ricky Reina (both injured), Invicta brought in loan signings James Virgo (left back) and Anthony Hogg (central midfield) from Dover Athletic.

Hogg had previously sat on the bench at St George's Lane when Dover played Telford at Worcester back in September and had been on the bench again when Dover went out of the F. A. Umbro Trophy down the road at Hereford a fortnight ago.

Worcester, too, had notable team news with the return of midfielder Andy Ellis after a year out with a broken leg. Welsh semi-professional international Ellis is an intelligent player who had captained and scored for Woking during their 8-4 beating of Invicta in the F. A. Umbro Trophy back in January 1999.  The home side, though, were dealt a blow when top goalscorer Mark Owen limped off after half an hour following two heavy challenges from Michael Everitt.

Everitt was booked for the first of those two fouls as early as the 6th minute, with Hogg (8th minute foul on Ellis) and Steve Lawrence (kicking the ball away after it had gone out for a throw-in) also booked before half time, along with Worcester's Alan Davies (43rd minute foul on Jeff Ross).  Lutz shot wide in the 25th minute with Worcester's best chance of the first half, but Invicta went closest during the opening 45 minutes when goalkeeper Danny McDonnell kept out Paul Chambers' 40th minute header at the far post when Everitt won the visitors' only corner of the game, taken by new boy Virgo.

Substitute Carl Tranter shot wide across the Invicta goal in the 50th minute and Readings came to his side's rescue after 58 minutes when a ball over the defence put Cotter clean through.

Strikers Lawrence and James Dryden worked hard all afternoon but Invicta never looked like retrieving the situation after Worcester's two goals and finished the game with centre half Scott Daniels thrown forward as an emergency striker.

WORCESTER CITY: McDonnell, Davies, Bradley, Tucker, Heeley, Weir, Lutz, Ellis, Owen (Tranter 30 mins), Cotter (Wyatt 82 mins), Cottrill (Carty 80 mins).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Virgo, Daniels, Everitt, Hogg, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden, Ross (Ayling 75 mins). Unused subs: Winfield, Palmer.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 KING'S LYNN 3

Folkestone Invicta crashed out of the F. A. Umbro Trophy when they went down 3-1 at home to fellow Dr Martens League Premier Division side King's Lynn at Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon.  Centre forward Lyndon Rowland was the hero for the Norfolk club as his hat-trick to took the Linnets into the last 32 of the competition for the first time in their history.

With the scores level at 1-1 with 15 minutes remaining, one-time Sittingbourne striker Rowland struck twice to put this Third Round tie beyond the home side's reach.  Rowland hap opened the scoring during first half stoppage time when he was there at the far post to convert Simon Dakin's deep right wing cross. But Invicta were level just seven minutes into the second half with a similar goal as Stuart White tapped the ball home after Steve Lawrence put goalkeeper Chuck Martini under pressure following good work by Paul Chambers and James Dryden.

With a replay looming, Rowland restored the visitors' lead after 75 minutes when he knocked home fellow striker Jon Palmer's ball in from the right following a hopeful ball forward. And Rowland completed his hat-trick by making it 3-1 after 82 minutes when a ball in from the left had the Invicta defence in trouble again.

Invicta's two main injury doubts - captain Chambers and left back Richard Ponsford - both played the full 90 minutes, although Chambers' cause wasn't helped when he went down heavily under challenge from Palmer as early as the 3rd minute.

But Invicta were dealt a blow when striker Nicky Dent limped off on the half hour mark to be replaced by the eager Dryden who was to have a good game. Chances were few and far between during the first half as Lawrence lobbed wide for Invicta in the 17th minute and centre half Scott Daniels blocked Tommy Wright's 34th minute strike at the other end.

It was to be a much better second half as Invicta attempted to cancel out Rowland's opener. Chamebrs shot against the post after 50 minutes following good play from Dryden and the pair were involved again two minutes later for White's equaliser.

But King's Lynn were able to regain the initiative as Rowland shot wide from the edge of the penalty area and then headed over from virtually on the Invicta goal line. Rowland missed a good chance when Wright found Dakin down the right after 66 minutes, but was soon to be his club's hero. The introduction of teenager John Ayling for the closing ten minutes injected some much-needed pace into the Invicta line up and the substitute was denied by goalkeeper Martini in the 84th minute.

There were bookings for Invicta's Daniels (19th minute) and King's Lynn centre half Glenn Fuff (64th minute).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, White (Ayling 80 mins), Briggs, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent (Dryden 32 mins), Ross. Unused subs: Everitt, Winfield.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 4 ST LEONARDS 6
(After extra time.)

Folkestone Invicta went out of the Dr Martens League Cup when they lost an extraordinary First Round tie 6-4 after extra time against struggling Eastern Division side St Leonards at Cheriton Road on Tuesday night.

Trailing 2-0 at half time, Invicta hit back to lead 3-2 before the visitors forced extra time with an equaliser five minutes from time.Invicta restored their lead during the first period of extra time but were pegged back again and it was the visitors who came out on top and now play hosts to Langney Sports in the Second Round.

The home side enjoyed the early ascendancy, but it was St Leonards who opened the scoring in the 28th minute when midfielder Desmond Boateng dribbled through the middle of the Invicta defence and poked the ball past furious goalkeeper Dave Wietecha. It was 2-0 just four minutes later when striker Dominic Barclay scored at the second attempt after Wietecha had saved his initial effort when centre half Andy Larkin failed to cut the ball out.

Richard Ponsford cleared off the line from Ross Venables in the 43rd minute as Invicta were reeling. A triple substitution at half time highlighted the home side's desperation. But they were thrown a lifeline after 67 minutes when Andy Morris made it 2-1 from the penalty spot after Danny Moody was booked for going through the back of Nicky Dent.

Captain Paul Chambers picked his spot but shot against the post after 75 minutes, but Invicta were level seconds later when centre half Scott Daniels headed home substitute Jeff Ross' cross from the left.

And the home side appeared to have completed their comeback when Ross opened his account for the season with a glorious 83rd minute strike after a move involving both Dent and Steve Lawrence. But Barclay latched onto a through ball to save the day for St Leonards two minutes later.

Defender Larkin popped up to volley his side ahead again in the 96th minute. It was Larkin's first goal of the season and only his second in Invicta colours, exactly two years to the day after his previous effort at home to Witney Town.  But again Invicta could not hold on to their lead and as Barclay completed his hat-trick with a great finish after 101 minutes. And substitute Shaun Loft made it 5-4 to the Sussex side from the penalty spot after Boateng had gone down under a 105th minute challenge from Larkin.

Goalkeeper Graham Bannatyne touched over substitute Ricky Reina's 111th minute effort from the right, but there was to be no way back and Venables made it 6-4 in the 118th minute.

Dent joined Michael Everitt in the referee's notebook in the final minute to sum up Invicta's frustration. Dent had almost started the game in sensational fashion when his lob from within his own half left goalkeeper Bannatyne stranded but ended up just wide of the post.

Invicta's Chambers finished the game clearly struggling with what appeared to be a groin strain as he dropped back to be the last man from towards the end of the 90 minutes with the home side having already used all three substitutes.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford (Winfield 45 mins), Larkin, Daniels, Everitt (Ross 45 mins), Briggs, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent, Dryden (Reina 45 mins).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0 BATH CITY 2

Folkestone Invicta endured another frustrating afternoon on Saturday when they were well beaten by a strong Bath City side and had centre half Andy Larkin sent off by referee Gavin Hoare from Strood.

The Romans were always in control of the game as they took the lead as early as the forth minute through centre half Colin Towler and increased their lead in the 54th minute thanks to top goalscorer Martin Paul. And while it did not affect the result of the game one of the big talking points on Saturday was the performance of the referee.

Mr Hoare has never endeared himself to the Folkestone club over the past few years and he will once again be off their Christmas card list after booking six home players and sending off both Larkin and manager Neil Cugley.

Larkin was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 67th minute for a tangle with big centre forward Graham Colbourne when it appeared that the Invicta defender had initially been fouled. And Cugley was sent into the stands three minutes later for the second time this season by the same referee, the only two times it has happened to the Invicta manager in over ten years as a boss.

But all that cannot disguise the fact that Invicta were always second best in this game as they slumped to their sixth defeat in eleven home Premier Division games so far this season. The rot set in as early as the fourth minute when captain Paul Chambers waywardly headed the ball behind his own goal and Towler headed home Scott Walker's subsequent corner.

It was exactly the start Invicta did not want after conceding three goals from set pieces at Margate on New Year's Day. In a lively opening period Andy Morris was denied by goalkeeper Sal Bibbo after a neat one-two with Nicky Dent after six minutes, while at the other end Paul sidefooted wide after ten minutes when Mike Davis combined with Jimmy Fraser down the right.

There was a flashpoint in the 18th minute when Invicta left back Richard Ponsford was lucky to escape with just a yellow card after a horror tackle with Fraser which infuriated the away side. Stuart White soon followed him into the referee's notebook, but the home side were close in the 34th minute with a deft chip from Dent after a Chambers ball.

But Bath finished the half strongly as Dave Wietecha got down to save Davis' 37th minute shot and Mark Harrington fired over in the 44th minute after a Colbourne ball. And Invicta had a mountain to climb when Paul headed home a cross from the right to make it 2-0 within ten minutes of the second half.

Larkin was booked in the 56th minute for pulling down Colbounre right on the edge of the area. A double substitution after 58 minutes heralded the much-anticipated re-appearance in Invicta colours of former hero Ricky Reina after a five-year absence, but he was unable to make a fairytale impact here.

Scott Daniels became the next Invicta player to be booked and Invicta's problems increased with Larkin's dismissal following another melee involving both sets of players. The controversy spread to the touchline with Cugley's dismissal and things became somewhat farcical as both Chambers (dissent) and Dent (challenge on the goalkeeper) were also booked as the referee had lost control of the game.

Invicta hold their position away from the relegation zone but have again conceded more goals than any other side in their league.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, White (Everitt 58 mins), Briggs, Chambers, Lawrence (Dryden 85 mins), Dent, Ross (Reina 58 mins).

BATH CITY: Bibbo, Vickerman, Walker, Holloway, Towler, Tisdale, Davis (MacLean 82 mins), Fraser, Colbourne (Allison 88 mins), Paul, Harrington (Gosling 74 mins).

MARGATE 3 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2

Folkestone Invicta suffered a heartbreaking defeat on New Year's Day when they went down to an injury time goal away to new Dr Martens League Premier Division leaders Margate at Hartsdown Park.

Invicta were only behind for about 20 seconds throughout the game but came back with nothing to show for their efforts as Lee Williams' last-ditch winner won the day for the home side. Invicta had twice been ahead in front of the 950 crowd and appeared to have earnt a point when goalkeeper Dave Wietecha saved Eliot Martin's penalty after 85 minutes.

The penalty decision was dubious when Phil Collins went down as Jeff Ross dived in and referee Bottomer from Chislehurst further infuriate the visiting contingent with the free kick decision that led to Margate's last-ditch winner.

Captain Martin slung the ball in and defender Williams was there to secure Margate's ninth straight home win in all competitions. Margate's success is based on strong defensive organisation and the danger they pose from set pieces. And it was the latter which was to prove to be Invicta's undoing as home centre half Iain O'Connell helped himself to two goals from corners. Attacking down the slope it was Margate who created the early chances as Jay Saunders fired over in the 8th minute.

But it was Invicta who opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a low shot on the turn from Ryan Briggs which went in off the post after Richard Ponsford's free kick was nodded down.

On a windy afternoon, former Dover Athletic centre half O'Connell made it 1-1 when he headed home Mark Munday's 27th minute corner from the left. Right back Andy Morris shot high and over for Invicta when he ran nearly the whole length of the pitch with the ball after 40 minutes, while striker Steve Lawrence forced Invicta's first corner of the game a minute later when it was captain Paul Chambers' turn to run at the home defence.

Margate themselves were close when Wietecha saved from the Premier Division's leading goalscorer Phil Collins during first half stoppage time. Invicta were playing the better football at the start of the second half and within a minute of the re-start Briggs shot over after running through the middle.

Morris restored Invicta's lead in the 52nd minute when he took the ball on and unleashed an absolute screamer from 25 yards. Local lad Morris always seems to thrive in big derby games such as this and lapped up the applause.
But Margate were level again in familiar fashion in the 65th minute when O'Connell met Martin's corner from the right after Leon Braithwaite had chased a seemingly lost cause to force a set piece from Richard Ponsford.

Margate signalled their intent by replacing defender Dean Yorath with a third striker Mo Tako after 73 minutes.
Invicta's Nicky Dent worked himself into a shooting position after 75 minutes and fired wide and a minute later was booked for kicking the ball away in anger when he wanted the referee to play the advantage rule after a foul on Lawrence. But Morris moved across from right to left to send the subsequent free kick crashing against the Margate crossbar as luck began to desert the visitors.

Centre half Andy Larkin made a saving tackle on Braithwaite in the 84th minute when the Margate striker seemed set to score. But again things went against the visitors when Ross' seemingly innocuous challenge resulted in Margate's penalty. But justice seemed to have been done when Wietecha came to his side's rescue to deny Martin.

There was to be that last final cruel twist as Margate played their get-out-of-jail card. Invicta will hope that such moments will even themselves out during the second half of the season as they bid to stay up, while Margate go into the New Year as leaders after title favourites Burton Albion were beaten 2-1 at Ilkeston Town. Margate's Munday was booked as his side celebrated their last gasp winner.

MARGATE: Turner, Yorath (Tako 73 mins), Lamb, Edwards, Williams, O'Connell, Munday, Martin, Braithwaite, Collins, Saunders.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, White, Briggs, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent, Ross. Unused subs: Winfield, Dryden, Everitt.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2 FISHER ATHLETIC (London) 1

Folkestone Invicta made it three consecutive home wins during December as they overcame fellow strugglers Fisher Athletic (London) at a cold Cheriton Road on Boxing Day. On a heavily sanded pitch Invicta took a stranglehold on the game when first half goals from Steve Lawrence and Paul Chambers gave them a 2-0 lead.

But Leroy Huggins pulled a goal back for the visitors just before half time to leave the result in doubt until the final whistle. Invicta went into the game with an unchanged line up, but it was Fisher who had the first chance of the game in the 7th minute when Invicta centre half Scott Daniels headed off the line to deny Peter Overton after Huggins had pulled the ball back. The home side responded two minutes later as Nicky Dent brought the best out of goalkeeper Maurice Munden at the other end.

Invicta opened the scoring in the 16th minute when the unmarked Lawrence nodded home when right back Andy Morris' throw in worked its way across to him. Dent blasted over in the 30th minute when Jeff Ross' deep left wing cross presented him with a good chance to increase Invicta's lead.

But Chambers made it 2-0 after 33 minutes when he fired home after his initial shot had been saved when Morris' up-and-under put his former Ashford Town team mate Munden under pressure. Daniels's effort was cleared off the line after 36 minutes when the home side forced their first corner of the game and appeared to be well in control of proceedings.

But Invicta's grip on the game was loosened when Sam Tydeman made a good 41st minute run to set up Huggins to fire low into the far corner of the net. It was the first goal Invicta had conceded in 340 minutes of football.  Clear cut chances were few and far between after the interval. Richard Ponsford's free kick flew just wide after 68 minutes following a foul by Tydeman on Chambers. But Invicta had an escape at the other end when the ball held up in the sand after 74 minutes when centre forward Overton appeared to be through for the visitors. Munden touched over a Dent header from a Ponsford free kick after 81 minutes as the home side went forward again.

There were bookings for Invicta centre half Andy Larkin (foul on Ray Powell after 52 minutes) and for Fisher's Tydeman (challenge on Dent after 26 minutes) and Powell (lunge at Daneils after 81 minutes).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, White, Briggs, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent, Ross. Unused subs: Winfield, Everitt, Dryden.

SALISBURY CITY 0 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0

Folkestone Invicta came back from Wiltshire with a creditable point away to sixth-placed Salisbury City from their first ever visit to the Raymond McEnhill Stadium on the Saturday before Christmas. This was Invicta's third consecutive clean sheet and also their fourth draw in their last five away league games which suggests that this side is capable of surviving at Premier Division level as long as it begins to win of its home matches.

On a bitterly cold afternoon deep amidst the Salisbury Plains, Invicta went into the match with the same starting line up which had comfortably beaten Worthing in the F. A.. Trophy. And on a good playing surface the visitors always looked capable of getting something from the match as they became the first team to prevent Salisbury from scoring in a home game so far this season.

The 428 crowds had to wait until the 20th minute for the first serious efforts on goal when man of the match Tyrone Bowers for Salisbury and Steve Lawrence for Invicta forced corners from goalkeepers Dave Wietecha and Justin Shuttlewood respectively. Shuttlewood did well to hold Richard Ponsford's 39th minute shot, with Lawrence waiting to convert any rebound. But with home supporters growing restless, having not been beaten at home all season, top goalscorer Paul Sales shot over from 25 yards in the 43rd minute and Wietecha had to keep out Martin Shepherd's looping effort just before half time.

Salisbury put Invicta under slightly more pressure after the interval as Wietecha came out quickly to save at Jimmy Smith's feet after a 56th minute ball in from the left and Wietecha was there again after 57 minutes when Sales let fly from outside the box. Invicta replaced left winger Jeff Ross with teenager Darren Winfield after 70 minutes as they looked to dig in for a point.

Smith couldn't quite work out an opening for himself inside the Invicta penalty area in the 80th minute, but the visitors nearly stole the lead a minute later when Shuttlewood touched over Ryan Briggs' header when a Ponsford free kick was nodded on. There was a scare for Invicta when Bowers got to the bye line down the right hand flank after 82 minutes, but centre half Scott Daniels was there to clear the ball away to safety.

SALISBURY CITY: Shuttlewood, Bartlett, Cook, Lush, Emms, Turk, Bowers, Sales, Shepherd, Smith (Harbut 85 mins), Riohardson. Unused subs: Curtis, Simpkins.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, White, Briggs, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent, Ross (Winfield 70 mins). Unused subs: Everitt, Dryden.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 4 WORTHING 0

Folkestone Invicta won through in their much delayed F. A. Umbro Trophy Second Round tie on Monday night as goals from Steve Lawrence (2), Scott Daniels and Nicky Dent set up a Third Round meeting with fellow Dr Martens League Premier Division side King's Lynn at Cheriton Road on Saturday January 13th.

It was perhaps fitting that the rain should return on Monday night after the tie had previously been postponed three times, but it was not enough to dampen Invicta's parade as the Folkestone side cruised to their most comfortable victory of the season so far.

Invicta were on top from the start as left back Richard Ponsford sent a screamer flying just over the Worthing crossbar in the opening minutes. Dent headed wide after six minutes following an excellent run from within his own half to the Worthing bye line by left winger Jeff Ross. The Worthing defence just about managed to scramble the ball away from their own goal line when they seemed set to concede an own goal after 14 minutes.

Paul Chambers was close when a great ball from Dent put him through. But Invicta were ahead after 20 minutes when centre half Daniels touched in his second goal in three days after goalkeeper Richard Waters touched Ponsford's 30-yard free kick into his path.

It was 2-0 in the 28th minute when Lawrence headed home Ponsford's corner from the right. Mark Burt for Worthing and Ponsford again for Invicta were close from outside the area, while Invicta goalkeeper Dave Wietecha saved Gary Green's long range shot at the second attempt just before half time.

It was 3-0 after 50 minutes when Dent collected the ball from striking partner Lawrence, took it in and rifled the ball low into the net across the wet surface. Worthing improved after the interval with the introduction of striker Ben Carrington who headed over from Spencer Mintram's cross. Mark Rice missed a good chance when he shot wide across goal as the visitors began to throw players forward.

The fourth goal was a copy of the second as Lawrence headed home another Ponsford corner from the right in the 70th minute. With the game now well won, Stuart White shot wide when Lawrence played him in. Green became the only player to be booked by referee M. John from Croydon.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels (Everitt 77 mins), White, Briggs, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent, Ross (Winfield 67 mins). Unused subs: Dryden, Ayling.

Folkestone Invicta recorded their first Dr Martens League Premier Division victory for nearly three months thanks to a 24th minute goal from Scott Daniels at Cheriton Road.  Former Dover Athletic centre half Daniels half volleyed the ball into the net to notch his first goal for the club when a free kick was only half cleared to give the home side a much-needed three points. It was Daniels' first game back after a hamstring injury and he later collected the Man of the Match award from sponsors British Energy.

Invicta's long wait for a league win had dragged on for too long, but there was an element of fortune to Saturday's victory as Tamworth controlled much of the game. With both sides struggling at the wrong end of the table, this was perhaps always going to be something of a tense affair. There was an explosive opening to the game as Invicta were close within a minute when visiting goalkeeper Darren Acton tipped over a typically speculative chip from Nicky Dent. And after just two minutes punches appeared to be thrown during a flare up between Billy Manuel and several Tamworth players, although referee M. John from Croydon chose to take no action.

The visitors had a great chance to open the scoring after 14 minutes when Warren Haughton was given on-side to be put clean through, only for Dave Wietecha to turn the ball round the post for a corner. Wietecha did well again to pick Scott Huckerby's shot out of the air after 15 minutes and Invicta had an even more narrow escape after 20 minutes when Huckerby's shot deflected against the crossbar.

Daniels' goal was just what Invicta needed and the home side were close again with a Richard Ponsford free kick after 27 minutes. Daniels was in more familiar territory when he made a saving tackle on Nick Colley after 30 minutes and Huckerby shot over for Tamworth from the right hand edge of the box after 34 minutes.

Invicta were riding their luck and Colley shot against the post after 35 minutes. David Foy shot wide as the Lambs continued to create chances and Rob Warner's right wing cross caused more danger in the Invicta box. There was another flare up right on half time when Dent clashed with goalkeeper Acton. Tamworth started the second half strongly and Huckerby headed just wide after 65 minutes. Wietecha touched the ball away acrobatically as Invicta faced more pressure after 75 minutes.

But the home side dug in and there was some respite when Dent shot over after 81 minutes following a great run from Ryan Briggs. Foy finally became the game's only booking after 83 minutes.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Briggs, Daniels, White, Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence (Dryden 83 mins), Dent, McCann. Unused subs: Ross, Ayling.

TAMWORTH: Acton, Warner, Mutchell, Colley, Howard, Hatton, Foy, Turner (Hallam 65 mins), Huckerby, Haughton, Carter (Haywood 62 mins). Unused sub: Clark.

STAFFORD RANGERS (1) 3 FOLKESTONE INVICTA (0) 0
Folkestone Invicta came away from Stafford empty handed after conceding goals at the start of each half on a heavy and bobbly pitch at Marston Road on Saturday afternoon. The home side were ahead as early as the 3rd minute when Antony Eccleston opened the scoring and put the result beyond doubt with two goals within the first ten minutes of the second half. Invicta fell behind when the ball fell to Ecclestobn who prodded the ball home after Leigh Everitt had combined with Darren Middleton down the right flank. All the first half chances fell to the home side as Andy Larkin made a great tackle to deny Eccleston after ten minutes and Dave Wietecha saved at his near post to deny Everitt on the quarter of an hour mark. Wietecha was to keep the visitors in it during the first half as he tipped over Middleton cross-cum-shot and made an excellent double save after 30 minutes when Middleton put in another dangerous low cross from the right. And the Invicta goalkeeper was at it again after 40 minutes on his 100th appearance for the club with another good save after a throw in from the left was headed on.

But any hopes Invicta had of salvaging something from the game evaporated during the opening period of the second half as Craig Lovatt made it 2-0 after 48 minutes when Wietecha could only touch away Paul Kiely's drive from the left. And it was 3-0 just four minutes later when dangerous centre forward Joe O'Connor ran through the middle to round Wietecha and touch the ball into an empty net. It was turning into another miserable afternoon for Invicta, but the bitterly cold weather did not deter one male streaker who ran onto the pitch after 63 minutes. Invicta were in trouble again after 64 minutes when Wietecha managed to keep out O'Connor's attempted chip, with Andy Morris there to clear off the line. Middleton shot over in the 66th minute after a move involving O'Connor and Kiely, but there was some respite for Invicta as substitute James Dryden headed a Morris cross wide.

Prompted by Billy Manuel, Invicta enjoyed their best spell of the game during the final 20 minutes as Nicky Dent's shot flashed across the goal after 70 minutes. But the visitors had Peter McCann to thank three minutes later as the young Scot saved a certain goal with a block in the middle of the Invicta box. Home goalkeeper Richard Williams tipped over Manuel's shot after 76 minutes and Paul Chambers volleyed against the post when Ryan Briggs played the ball in from the left. Stafford's Eccleston became the game's only booking after a flare up in the 90th minute.

OXFORD CITY 3 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 4

Folkestone Invicta at last graduated into the Second Round of the F. A. Umbro Trophy when they won Monday night's First Round replay by the odd goal in seven at Oxford City's Court Place Farm. Invicta now face Worthing, who like Oxford City play in the Ryman League Division One, at Cheriton Road in the next round this Saturday afternoon.

The visitors got just the start they did not want as Michael Thorp opened the scoring for the home side after just two minutes when he let fly from outside the penalty area after the ball had come back off an upright when Matty Whitehead forced the game's first corner. But Invicta were not behind for long as striker Steve Lawrence made it 1-1 after five minutes when he slotted the ball home from Billy Manuel's through ball after Darren Winfield had laid Jeff Ross' throw in off to his more experienced colleague. 18-year-old Winfield was in the starting line up for the first time as a left back, with Richard Ponsford moving into the heart of the defence to replace the injured Scott Daniels who had pulled a hamstring in Saturday's 2-1 home defeat against Moor Green.

It was 2-1 to Invicta after 20 minutes when Ponsford's free kick skidded off the wet surface and into the net after Shaun Wimble was booked for a foul on Paul Chambers. Whitehead was at the centre of everything the home side created during the first half and he tested Dave Wietecha with shots after 35 and 43 minutes, but Invicta finished the first half well in control. There was incident even during the half time interval as assistant referee Read had to be replaced after himself pulling a muscle. Invicta themselves had injury problems of their own as Nicky Dent was replaced a minute after the re-start with a groin injury.

Oxford's danger man Dwaine Strong began to feature as he shot just over after 47 minutes, but Invicta were close two minutes later with a glancing header from substitute James Dryden from Jeff Ross' left wing cross. It was 3-1 after 52 minutes when Lawrence capitalised on a stray back pass, went round goalkeeper Alan Foster and squared the ball unselfishly for Dryden to score.

That should have been that, but Oxford responded as a goalmouth melee ensued when Wietecha let a 57th minute corner slip and Strong went close a minute later. As in the first game Oxford got better as the game went on and substitute Danny Wise headed in a free kick from the right to make it 3-2 after 67 minutes. Invicta re-established their two-goal advantage after 80 minutes when the linesman's flag did not go up for once and Stuart White slid the ball under the goalkeeper for what was to prove to be the winner, with Chambers there to make sure the ball had crossed the line.

Wise brought Oxford back into it at 4-3 with his second goal of the night and third of the tie after 86 minutes. And Invicta had to endure an uncomfortable finale as the home side had the ball in the net again from outside the penalty area after 88 minutes, only for an offside flag to come to the visitors' rescue. And Wise's control let him down when he was put through again in the final minute.

OXFORD CITY: Foster, Sweeney (Ferreira (85 mins)), Dark. Peirson, Thorp (Wise 62 mins), Emsden, Organ, Whitehead, Druce, Strong, Wimble.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Winfield, White, Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent (Dryden 46 mins), Ross (Everitt 85 mins). Unused sub: Ayling.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 MOOR GREEN 2

Folkestone Invicta's suffered another defeat in the Dr Martens League Premier Division when they went down 2-1 at home to high-flying Moor Green amidst atrocious conditions at Cheriton Road.  Played against a backdrop of torrential rain, this was a proverbial game of two halves as Invicta played well during the first half, but for the third consecutive home game relinquished a lead and let their visitors back into the game.

Nicky Dent had opened the scoring with a spectacular over head kick after 20 minutes for his fourth goal in four games since returning from an achilles injury, but the visitors hit back to win with two goals after the interval.
The conditions made things difficult for everyone on Saturday but Invicta set about their task well. Dent headed wide at the far post after 17 minutes from Peter McCann's deep left wing cross following a good move involving Billy Manuel and Steve Lawrence, and Dent opened the scoring three minutes later when he acrobatically met Stuart White's right wing cross after left back Richard Ponsford had switched the play across the field.

It could have been 2-0 before half time but Moor Green goalkeeper Andy De Bont saved from Paul Chambers after an excellent 37th minute cross from right back Andy Morris. Moor Green had not seriously threatened the Invicta goal throughout the first half, but the visitors were to dominate the second half. It was 1-1 after 58 minutes when the unmarked Steve Pope equalised after Richard Softley had touched on a free kick from the right.

The visitors were now on top, though Invicta were close on the hour when Chambers headed over Manuel's cross.
With the rain at its worst, Moor Green took the lead when Softley bundled the ball over the line after an almighty melee on the Invicta line. Invicta goalkeeper Dave Wietecha made a great save to deny substitute Jamie Petty after 72 minutes, but Invictah ad a good chance to equalise in the 86th minute when De Bont saved from White after Dent had poked the ball through. This was another disappointing result which put Invicta back into the bottom four, with Moor Green climbing to second in the table, but few could fault the efforts of the players in such horrendous conditions.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels (Briggs 86 mins), White (Maunder 86 mins), Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent, McCann (Ross 72 mins).

MOOR GREEN: De Bont, Gillard, Brighton (Woodley 45 mins), Stanley, Pope, Hayde (Crisp), Softley, Baddams, Hall, Shepherd (Petty 68 mins), Martin.

Attendance: 336.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2 OXFORD CITY 2

Folkestone Invicta and Oxford City will have to do it all again on Thursday night when their F. A. Umbro Trophy 1st Round tie was finally played at Cheriton Road on Tuesday night but finished in a draw after three postponements.

In atrocious conditions the home side twice let the lead slip and face a replay at Oxford's Court Place Farm to see who plays at home to Worthing in the 2nd Round on Saturday December 2nd. Invicta went into the game with new Australian striker Adam Maunder in the starting line up for the first time alongside Steve Lawrence and Nicky Dent. The home side had all the early chances as Dent shot against the far post after just five minutes when Andy Morris' right wing cross skidded across the wet surface and left back Richard Ponsford was close when he let fly from 25 yards after 15 minutes.

Invicta opened the scoring on the half hour when Ponsford's corner went into the net off Oxford centre half Michael Thorp, with Dent in close enough attendance to claim his 50th Invicta goal in 77 starts since joining the club during September 1998. But the visitors were level right on half time with their first real strike on goal when Andy Larkin failed to intercept a ball forward and the dangerous Dwaine Strong rounded goalkeeper Dave Wietecha to tap the ball into an empty net.

Invicta signalled their intent at the start of the second half, but captain Paul Chambers could only direct his header into the hands of goalkeeper Alan Foster after another Morris cross. There was no doubting the identity of the second Invicta goalscorer as Dent picked his spot to restore Invicta's lead after 53 minutes following another ball in from the right.

Invicta were in complete control of the tie, but Dent was booked for his protests when the home side had strong penalty appeals waved away when Stuart White went down in the box in the 70th minute. And temperatures were raised when goalkeeper Foster went down under a late challenge from Dent. A replay was the last thing Neil Cugley's side wanted, but substitute Wise got the faintest of touches to head Strong's left wing cross into the net after 75 minutes. A saving block kept Oxford alive when Chambers was denied following an excellent Ponsford ball after 86 minutes, but the visitors were now playing with more belief and Wise shot wide with a chance to win in after 89 minutes. Ponsford was booked for a rash tackle in the 90th minute.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, S. White (Ayling 83 mins), Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence (Ross 60 mins), Dent, Maunder (Dryden (62 mins). Unused subs: Everitt, Readings.

OXFORD CITY: Foster, Sweeney (Creer 75 mins), Dark, Thorp, Peirson, Emsden, Organ (Wise 64 mins), Whitehead, Druce, Strong (Scares 90 mins), Wimble. Unused subs: Rutter, Abbassi.

HALESOWEN TOWN 4 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 4

Folkestone Invicta staged an incredible comeback to salvage a point from Saturday's trip to fellow strugglers Halesowen Town. Things were looking pretty grim as Invicta trailed 4-1 with half an hour remaining. But with nothing to lose the visitors threw players forward to completely turn the game around with three goals in an 18-minute spell as Steve Lawrence hit a hat-trick and Richard Ponsford equalised with a 30-yard free kick after 10 minutes.

Invicta could even have won the game as both captain Paul Chambers and new boy Ryan Briggs went desperately close to finding an unlikely winner in the closing minutes. With Peter McCann back on loan, Invicta had gone into the game with a 3-5-2 formation, with the Barnet youngster and Andy Morris acting as wing backs.
But the central defensive three of Ponsford, Larkin and Daniels did not look comfortable and Invicta fell behind after just ten minutes when Daniels' headed back pass put goalkeeper Dave Wietecha in trouble and Peter Sutton was given the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net.

It was 1-1 after 24 minutes when home goalkeeper Andy Quy dropped McCann's deep cross and Morris' brave header presented Lawrence with the chance to equalise.
Halesowen restored their lead when Stuart Payne played a one-two with Lee Hines after 33 minutes and played the ball low across goal from the left for Sutton to strike again. It was to get worse for Invicta after 43 minutes when Wietecha made a good save from Payne but the Halesowen striker made it 3-1 from the rebound.

And there was action from the start of the second half as Chambers was denied by Quy at one end and Payne latched onto a ball over the defence at the other end to make it 4-1 after 46 minutes. Invicta replaced Stuart White with new Australian striker Adam Maunder after 55 minutes to finish the game with three forwards and reverted back to a flat back four.
They were thrown a lifeline after 62 minutes when Lawrence headed in Ponsford's corner to make it 4-2.

It was 4-3 after 73 minutes when Nicky Dent found Maunder on the right and the substitute's low cross was converted at the far post by hat-trick hero Lawrence who had more than doubled his tally for the season in this one game. The comeback was complete after 80 minutes when Ponsford's 30-yard free kick crept in after a foul on Daniels.

The game was now completely open and Wietecha did well to save from Sutton after 85 minutes which kept Invicta level.
Chambers was agonisingly close after Maunder had met Morris right wing cross after 86 minutes and goalkeeper Quy somehow kept out Briggs' 89th minute volley which appeared to have goal written all over it.
Chambers became the game's only booking in the 89th minute.

HALESOWEN: Quy, Comyn, Owen, Wood, Lloyd, Collins, Cartwright, Sutton, Payne (Crisp), Smith, Hines. Unused subs: Ford, Aldridge.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, S. White (Maunder 55 mins), Briggs, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent, McCann (Ross 78 mins). Unused sub: Dryden.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 ILKESTON TOWN 3

Folkestone Invicta's poor home run continued when they went down 3-1 against Ilkeston Town at a blustery Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon. It had all appeared to be going so well for Neil Cugley's side as Nicky Dent marked his long-awaited return from injury by opening the scoring in the 38th minute. But Invicta soon fell behind to goals either side of half time from Ilkeston's record signing Paul Eshelby and never recovered as former Nottingham Forest captain John McGovern began his managerial career with the Robins with a victory.

There were new faces in the Invicta line up as reserve team goalkeeper Kevin Readings came in for the suspended Dave Wietecha and teenager Ryan Briggs replaced the suspended Billy Manuel in midfield for his first appearance since joining the club on loan from Barnet. And the home side held their own during the opening period as visiting goalkeeper Andy Love made the first save of the game when he denied Jeff Ross in the 16th minute after Dent threaded the ball through.

At the other end Ilkeston forced the game's first corner when Eshelby's shot was blocked when Mark Clifford squared the ball across to him from the right. Readings made a good save when he palmed away Paul Challinor's fierce free kick from the edge of the box in the 33rd minute, but Invicta themselves were close when right back Andy Morris nearly headed them ahead from close range two minutes later. And Dent opened the scoring when he virtually passed the ball into the net when the danger appeared to be over as Steve Lawrence was dispossessed from Briggs' ball.lkeston came straight down the other end and Glenn Kirkwood shot against the post when put through. But the visitors were level in the 43rd minute with a looping header from Eshelby. And Readings was called into action again to deny Clifford just before half time.

The second half belonged to Ilkeston as Eshelby made it 3-1 in the 49th minute when his free kick from the left bounced straight into the Invicta goal as the rain began to fall heavily. It was 3-1 in the 70th minute when Clifford finished well after substitute Jamie Clarke had played the ball across from the left. Invicta soon made a triple substitution, but there was to be no way back. Readings saved from Clarke in the 81st minute, while Richard Ponsford was close for Invicta with a trademark free kick in the final minute.
There were bookings for Invicta's Lawrence, Andy Larkin and Morris.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Readings, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels (Everitt 73 mins), Hayes (Ayling 73 mins), Briggs, Chambers, Lawrence, Dent, Ross (Dryden 73 mins).
ILKESTON TOWN: Love, Gould, Whitehead, Timons, Middleton (Clarke 53 mins), Challinor, Eshelby, Knapper, Helliwell, Kirkwood, Clifford. Unused subs: Poppleton, Todd.

KING'S LYNN 0 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0
Folkestone Invicta picked up their second successive away point when they recorded their first clean sheet of the season at a windy King's Lynn on Saturday afternoon. Invicta never looked like losing at the Walks Stadium but again lacked that extra cutting edge which could have won them all three points. Manager Neil Cugley stuck with the same 4-4-2 formation which had won a midweek point at Welling and the visitors will have been happier with the result than their home counterparts. Invicta had the better of the few chances on Saturday after a long drive into Norfolk.

There was little to chose between the two sides from the start in a low key opening spell which saw Invicta goalkeeper Dave Wietecha acrobatically touch the ball around the post as King's Lynn forced a succession of early corners. Invicta nearly went ahead after 33 minutes when Stuart White's diving header clipped the crossbar from James Dryden's deep left wing cross, with home goalkeeper Chuck Martini stranded outside his penalty area after Dryden had beat him to Jeff Ross' forward ball. The home side were close themselves two minutes later when Wietecha saved at point blank range from Adie Hayes when everybody was waiting for an offside flag from centre forward Lyndon Rowland's mis-hit shot. And Scott Daniels came to Invicta's rescue with a 40th minute tackle on Lee Wilson after a move involving Emeka Nwadike and Hayes.

Invicta had the better of the second half as Martini saved from Paul Chambers within a minute of the re-start after Steve Lawrence touched the ball back to the Invicta captain from Richard Ponsford's left wing cross. James Dryden headed wide when perhaps Lawrence was better placed to meet Ross' left wing cross after an excellent 50 yard throw from Wietecha had started the attack. Daniels had to temporarily leave the field with a facial injury, but Invicta held on without him, though Wietecha did have to come out and save from Wilson. Chambers almost won it for Invicta when he headed inches wide from another Ross cross after Lawrnece had battled to dispossess a defender. But King's Lynn almost snatched it in the dying minutes when right back Chris Dakin headed over at the far post as the rain began to pour down. The 547 crowd was King's Lynn's lowest home attendance of the season so far.

KING'S LYNN: Martini, Dakin, March (Spearing 45 mins), Robinson, Fuff, Hayes, Nwadike, Mills, Thomas, Wilson (Palmer 72 mins), Wright. Unused sub: Bullimore.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Webster, Ponsford (Hayes 65 mins), Larkin, Daniels, S. White, Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden, Ross (Ayling 75 mins). Unused sub: Neal.

WELLING UNITED 1 FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1
A spectacular strike from captain Paul Chambers gave Folkestone Invicta a much-needed point from Tuesday night's visit to sixth-placed Welling United. Chambers collected the ball just before half time and hit a fantastic 25 yard strike which flew past home goalkeeper Glen Knight and into the corner of the net. It was Chambers' 10th goal of the season and the shaven-headed midfielder raced towards the Invicta supporters in delight as the visitors showed a far greater spirit and resolve than they had during Saturday's dismal performance at home to Clevedon.
Former Dover Athletic player John Budden had given Welling the lead with a fierce free kick inside the opening ten minutes of the game at Park View Road. But Invicta got stronger as the game went on and held on for a point despite having Billy Manuel sent off for dissent five minutes from time.
Both sides went into the game in need of a boost as Invicta looked to bounce back after three games without a goal and early pacesetters Welling looked to end a run of four successive Premier Division defeats.
On an excellent playing surface Invicta brought in left winger Jeff Ross from the start to give them a better balance. But the visitors were dealt an early blow when Budden's fast and low free kick flew past the Invicta wall and into the far corner of the net. Lew Watts' shot flashed past the Invicta goal after a crossfield ball from left back Mick Harney, while at the other end Chambers headed wide from a Ross cross. Dave Wietecha dealt comfortably with Hanley's free kick when Chambers was adjudged to have fouled Anthony Riviere and Wietecha saved from the dangerous Riviere when the Welling midfielder ran through the middle. Striker Paul Whitmarsh forced a corner from Wietecha right at the start of the second half and the big Invicta goalkeeper was grateful to see the ball ricochet into his arms from Welling centre half Mark Hone. Goalscorer Chambers was there to make a saving tackle on Riviere when Watts put him through as Welling looked to regain the lead. But Invicta were beginning to make in-roads of their own as centre half Scott Daniels was wide with a free header from a Ross corner and Richard Ponsford hit a free kick at Knight after Chambers' run through the middle had been interrupted by Budden, who was booked for his efforts. Welling seemed to run out of ideas as the game wore on but Wietecha had to make an important save with his feet to deny Dean Canoville. And Invicta threatened to take all three points when young striker James Dryden was put through but bundled over in the penalty area, with there also being a suspicion of handball by a home defender. Manuel's persistent protests saw him dismissed for foul and abusive language to referee Gavin Hoare from Strood, his third dismissal in Invicta colours. And referee Hoare was in the wars on the final whistle when he was poleaxed by the ball as Welling striker Canoville belted towards him in frustration.

WELLING UNITED: Knight, Harney (Farley), Watts, Horne, Edwards, Budden, Riviere, Rutherford, Canoville, Whitmarsh (Rowe), Chapman (Dolby).
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Webster, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, Manuel, White, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden, Ross. Unused subs: Ayling, Hayes, A. Morris.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0 CLEVEDON TOWN 3
Folkestone Invicta slipped back into the bottom four when they slumped to a desperately disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to bottom-of-the-table Clevedon Town at Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon. Invicta introduced new signing Adrian Webster from Ashford Town in place of injured collar bone victim Danny White and welcomed both Richard Ponsford and Steve Lawrence back from injury. But this was to be a poor performance from the start as Clevedon were the more purposeful side throughout.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Mark Badman fired home at the second attempt after Scott Daniels had blocked his initial effort. Clevedon were close again three minutes later when Badman shot over after Dave Wietecha had saved from Andy Mainwaring. Lawrence headed wide from Stuart White's right wing cross with Invicta's first real attempt on goal after 37 minutes. A deep left wing cross from Iain Harvey came back off the Invicta post after 41 minutes, while at the other end Paul Chambers's shot flashed across the Clevedon goal after he had cut in from the right just before half time.
The second half did not get any better for the home side as Daniels had to clear Jim Rollo's dangerous free kick after 47 minutes and Ponsford had to clear after 56 minutes when Paul Milsom sent in a tricky low ball from the left. James Dryden shot just wide from a Lawrence ball but was soon replaced by John Ayling, with Jeff Ross coming on for Ian Hayes at the same time. Right back Rollo came across to the left to send in another dangerous free kick after 65 minutes after a foul on Mainwaring.
At 1-0 Invicta still harboured hopes of salvaging a point and Lawrence fired over after 74 minutes when Ayling slid the ball through to him on the left hand edge of the box. But it was 2-0 to Clevedon after 77 minutes when Mainwaring tapped the ball in after a low ball in from the right. The game was now beyond Invicta's reach, but things were to get worse in a controversial finale. Goalkeeper Wietecha was sent off for catching Badman as the Clevedon goalscorer latched onto Danny Haines' through ball and substitute Andy Morris had to don the big goalkeeping jersey. Morris saved from Steve Lester but was soon beaten from the penalty spot when Mainwaring got up to fire home his second of the game during injury time after being fouled by Ponsford. Invicta's Lawrence (handball) and Andy Larkin (foul on Mainwaring) had earlier been booked on a miserable afternoon which saw the home side slip back into the relegation zone as Clevedon themselves moved off the bottom of the table.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Hayes (Ross 57 mins), Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, S. White (A.Morris 83 mins), Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden (Ayling 57 mins), Webster.
CLEVEDON TOWN: Hervin, Rollo, Haines, Peters, Jefferies, Coupe, Badman, Harvey, Milsom, Mainwaring, Lester. Unused subs: Skidmore, Ball, Groves.
21-Oct-00 Richard Murrill Attendance: 398.

TAMWORTH 1 - 0 FOLKESTONE INVICTA
No Sunday roasting at the Lamb Ground in a match which failed to sizzle, was settled by a solitary goal on the stroke of half time with Tamworth leap frogging Folkestone Invicta who dropped to 18th position in the table. Andy Morris returned from injury and was given a torrid time by Brian Gray (ex Telford forward) who provided several dangerous crosses on the left which fortunately for Invicta were not taken advantage of by his colleagues. John Neal had his first senior start for Folkestone and partnered Jimmy Dryden up front. Invicta missed an oportunity to take the lead midway through the first half when Paul Chambers (who else this season!) went clear but unfortunately saw his shot blocked by Tamworth's Nick Colley. Tamworth's keeper inadvertantly gave Invicta there best opportunities to score with his poor clearance kicks, with Chambers, Dryden and Neal all going close. The all important goal came in the 43rd minute against the run of play, Mark Turner burst through to test Invicta's Wietecha and the keeper parried well only to see the rebound fired home by Mark Hallam. After the interval Folkestone could find little inspiration and there were few memorable moments. Invicta failed to take advantage of numerical superiority for the last 10 minutes of the game during which time Tamworth were without there red carded keeper Acton, sent off for handling the ball outside the area. The Whites (Stuart and Danny) added to there collection of yellow cards Had they been able to field a fully fit side, Invicta would surely have dealt comfortably with this modest Midlands outfit.

HASTINGS TOWN 2 - 0 FOLKESTONE INVICTA
Folkestone Invicta were dumped out of the AXA Sponsored F. A. Cup when they went down 2-0 away to Hastings Town in Tuesday night's 2nd Qualifying Round replay at the Pilot Field. It was a case of 'under new management' for Hastings as former Bromley and Ashford Town boss George Wakeling was in charge for the first time after Dean White had resigned following Saturday's 1-1 draw at Cheriton Road to take up the post of assistant-manager at Brighton & Hove Albion. But it was White's 33-year-old cousin Terry who kept the family name alive in Hastings by opening the scoring from the penalty spot after 35 minutes and crossing for Danny Simmonds to make it 2-0 after 75 minutes.
It was the second year running that an injury-hit Invicta side had gone out of the F.A. Cup against a side from a league below them. Invicta brought in left winger Jeff Ross for injured midfielder Michael Everitt (back), but were again second best during the first half. Goalkeeper Dave Wietecha carried on from where he left off on Saturday by keeping out Duncan McArthur's long range shot when Hastings forced the first corner of the game after ten minutes. It was Hastings who were creating the better chances as Stuart Playford just failed to get in on the end of a free kick after 13 minutes and Stuart Myall headed wide with a good 19th minute chance. And the home side were ahead after 35 minutes when the burly White beat Wietecha from the penalty spot after McArthur had gone down after the combined challenge of Invicta's own Whites, Stuart and Danny. The latter was booked after the incident. 19-year-old Mcarthur was the outstanding outfield player of the two ties but found himself booked in the 44th minute. Invicta's best moment of the first half came a minute before the interval when captain Paul Chambers sent an audacious chip just over the crossbar.
The visitors came out for the second half with a greater sense of purpose and John Ayling shot over after 54 minutes when he collected the ball outside the penalty area from Billy Manuel. Invicta's best attempt on goal came on the hour when former Hastings centre half Andy Larkin's header was tipped over by goalkeeper Tony Kessell to force Invicta's first corner of the night. But the Sussex side went straight back up the other end and McArthur should have scored when Paul Jones shrugged off Stuart White down the right and pulled the ball back to him. Chambers was booked after 63 minutes and was close a minute later from a free kick. Wietecha was called into action again when he tipped over a dangerous cross-cum-shot from the left after 68 minutes. Wietecha kept out McArthur's chip after another piece of skill from the highly rated Hastings prospect after 73 minutes. And the outcome was put beyond doubt two minutes later when Simmonds headed in White's chip from the right flank. Hastings goalkeeper Kessell was booked for kicking the ball away after 83 minutes and then touched over James Dryden's free kick. And it is George Wakeling's new side who now go on to play hosts to Horsham in the 3rd Qualifying Round on Saturday October 14th.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 - 1 HASTINGS TOWN
Folkestone Invicta and Hastings Town have to do it all again on Tuesday night after 90 minutes at Cheriton Road was not enough to separate them in their AXA Sponsored F. A. Cup 2nd Qualifying Round tie. The winners will be at home to Horsham in the 3rd Qualifying Round on Saturday October 14th. Top goaslcorer Paul Chambers opened the scoring for Invicta after 53 minutes, but striker Paul Jones equalised for the Sussex side five minutes later to set up Tuesday night's replay at the Pilot Field. But this game will be best remembered for the magnificent performance of Invicta goalkeeper Dave Wietecha who, not for the first time this season, was comfortably man of the match. Invicta went into the game without striker Steve Lawrence, whose groin strain added to their injury woe. But they did have Danny White available again after he had made his debut at home to Newport County the previous week. Hastings signalled their intent by taking the game to Invicta from the start as Danny Simmonds first shot at Wietecha and then couldn't quite get on the end of Jones' ball within the opening five minutes. Invicta responded when Chambers chipped the ball up and volleyed into the side netting after latching onto a 7th minute touch from striker James Dryden. But the highlight of the first half came in the 39th minute when Wietecha turned Duncan McArthur's fierce 25 yard strike round the post for a corner. Wietecha was called into action again a minute later when he palmed Jones' shot over for a corner after a move involving McArthur and Simmonds. At the other end Dryden shot at goalkeepet Tony Kessell following a rare Invicta corner after 44 minutes. Wietecha made another great save in the 53rd minute when he turned McArthur's well-struck shot round the post for another Hastings corner. And Invicta were soon ahead when Chambers slotted the ball under goalkeeper Kessell after Dryden's shot had been blocked from substitute Jeff Ross' left wing cross. Wietecha came to Invicta's rescue again after 58 minutes when Jones ran through the home defence, but the visitors were level when the subsequent corner was pulled back for Jones to score. It was no more than Hastings deserved and Wietecha made a point blank save to deny Stuary Myall after 70 minutes. But Invicta had the better of the late chances as John Ayling couldn't quite get on the end of Ross' 79th minute cross after Billy Manuel had picked the left winger out. And Tony Burt did well to block Dryden's 83rd minute shot when Manuel threaded the ball through again. There were bookings for Invicta's Danny (first half foul on Steve Smith) and Stuart (foul on McArthur) White and Dryden (second half aerial challenge on Stuart Playford) and for Hastings' McArthur (foul on Ayling).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 3 - 1 NEWPORT COUNTY
Folkestone Invicta picked up a much-needed three points with a 3-1 victory over Newport County at a sunny Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon. Captain Paul Chambers led the way with two more goals, with striker Steve Lawrence also on the scoresheet as teenager John Ayling played a part in all three goals. Injuries and suspensions had left manager Neil Cugley short of personnel as Invicta went into the game having slipped into the dreaded bottom four in the Premier Division table. Centre half Andy Larkin was back after his recent groin injury and Invicta introduced new player Danny White, from Gravesend & Northfleet, on the right hand side of midfield. It was Newport who had the first chance of the game when a tremendous strike from Garry Shephard was kept out when it hit a defender close to the line. But Invicta opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Chambers rounded goalkeeper Pat Mountain and tapped the ball into an open net after some trickery from Ayling. A good run from Lawrence forced a save from Mountain two minutes later and Chambers was also close on the quarter of an hour mark, but this time chipped over. Gary Thorne and Jason Eaton were both close with header for Newport, and it looked as though the visitors had equalised after 27 minutes when Shephard lobbed Dave Wietecha, only for the ball to fall just wide of the post. But it was 2-0 to Invicta in the 29th minute when Lawrence smashed the ball in off the crossbar after Ayling again touched the ball through. There was a scare for Invicta on the half hour mark when referee Hayto from Chelmsford awarded a free kick right on the edge of the area when any contact with Newport's Matthew Rose appeared to occur inside the penalty box. Perhaps still hyped up by that, Rose was booked a minute later for a nasty challenge on Ayling. Invicta had a good chance to increase their lead further after 33 minutes when Lawrence won the ball off Thorne to set up Ayling who was denied by Mountain, with Lawrence himself hitting the rebound wide. Newport themselves never gave up and Chambers stopped Jason Donovan's 43rd minute shot close to his own goal line and Shephard headed at Wietecha before half time. Danny White was denied a debut goal for Invicta by a saving 48th minute tackle by Steve Benton. But it was 3-0 after 55 minutes when Chambers jinked his way through the Newport defence to sot the ball under the advancing Mountain after another Ayling ball. It was the goal of the game and took Chambers level at the top of the Premier Division goalscoring charts with eight goals. Lawrence shot over after 59 minutes following another good run from Ayling. But it was Newport who finished the game strongly. Donovan made it 3-1 in the 66th minute when his shot from the right was deflected in off Stuart White after a ball from Benton. White redeemed himself by blocking Shephard's 83rd minute shot when Newport substitute Shaun Chapple created the chance. Billy Manuel was there to intercept when Eaton and substitute Mike Flynn combined to set Donovan up again. And Darren Robison's corner spun off Manuel and was touched over by Wietecha in the closing minutes. Invicta new boy Danny White was booked in the 90th minute.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, S. White, D. White, Larkin, Daniels, Everitt, Manuel, Chambers (Hayes 67 mins), Lawrence, Ayling (Ross 79 mins), Dryden. Unused sub: Winfield.
NEWPORT COUNTY: Mountain, Robison, Benton, Davies (Chapple 65 mins), Kemp, Thorne, Rose (Hill 60 mins), Donovan, Eaton, Shephard, James (Flynn 60 mins).

CAMBRIDGE CITY 2 - 0 FOLKESTONE INVICTA
Folkestone Invicta suffered defeat on Monday night when they went down to two first half goals from Cambridge City striker Kevin Wilkin at a rainy Milton Road. Wilkin also scored twice when Invicta beat Cambridge 4-3 in that epic opening home fixture of the season back in August. Despite the wet conditions which made it difficult for defenders, Invicta's injury hit squad never looked like repeating that goal feast of the two clubs' previous meeting. And Neil Cugley's side found it difficult to contain an attractive Cambridge side in front of a 311 crowd. Both sides had chances in the opening minutes as Tesfaye Bramble shot wide following Richard Skelly's through ball in the opening minute and James Dryden forced a corner for Invicta from home goalkeeper Martin Davies. But that was about as good as it got for Invicta during the first half on a frustrating night for their front two. With centre half Andy Larkin adding to Invicta's growing injury list, the visitors brought left winger Jeff Ross in for his first starting appearance of the season in a 4-4-2 formation. But they found themselves under pressure as Bramble had a chance at the far post from a right wing cross and Dave Wietecha made a good save to deny Wilkin when Scott Daniels' attempted clearance fell to Bramble. Cambridge opened the scoring when Wilkin met Andy Pincher's near post corner. And it was soon 2-0 when Wilkin turned in Bramble's ball from the right. It looked as though Invicta might be on their way to a heavy defeat, but Wietecha came out bravely to save from Adam Wilde after a good crossfield ball from Skelly and Wilde sliced his volley wide after another cross from Bramble. To their credit Invicta came out with a bit more urgency in the second half, but it was Cambridge who went close when Steve Wenlock shot at Wietecha. Richard Ponsford shot at former Dover goalkeeper Davies when Bilyl Manuel's corner wasn't properly cleared and Steve Lawrence went close from a corner as Invicta sought a lifeline. Cambridge substitute Warren Waugh's delicate lob went just wide of the post as the ball was glanced onto him and it could have been 3-0 when Wenlock shot against the post and Wietecha made yet another excellent save to keep out Wilde's rebound. There were bookings for Invicta's Ponsford (foul on Bramble), Daniels (foul on Wilkin) and Dryden (fowl on substitute Neil Coburn).

CAMBRIDGE CITY: Davies, Linton (Coburn), Wardley, Holden, Girling, Wenlock, Skelly, Pincher, Wilkin, Bramble (Waugh), Wilde (Tovey).
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, White, Ponsford, McCann (Winfield), Daniels, Everitt, Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden, Ross (Ayling). Unused sub: Fisk.

WEYMOUTH 1 - 1 FOLKESTONE INVICTA
A 69th minute equaliser from James Dryden gave Folkestone Invicta a share of the spoils as they recorded their first draw of the season away to Weymouth on Saturday. Dryden glanced in a header from Stuart White's left wing cross to give the visitors a deserved point in front of an 850 crowd at the Wessex Stadium. Desperate for a positive result after the previous weekend's capitulation at home to Havant and Waterlooville, Invicta always looked capable of getting something from this game. But the home side had the best chances as Invicta goalkeeper Dave Wietecha saved a first half penalty and the visitors survived a late scare when Weymouth missed an open goal. With Andy Morris not making the trip due to a back injury, Invicta started with a three-man defence and gave 17-year-old midfielder Michael Everitt his first start at this level. There were few chances in the opening exchanges, but with home supporters beginning to turn against their team, Weymouth were awarded a penalty out of the blue after 25 minutes for handball against Scott Daniels. It was the third successive game during which Invicta had conceded a penalty, but Wietecha saved from David Laws and Ryan Cross put the rebound wide when it looked easier to score. Invicta came straight back up the other end and came close to scoring themselves after Paul Chambers combined with Dryden. Wietecha saved from Hutchinson after 33 minutes as the Terras began to exert their first sustained spell of pressure. And the home side opened the scoring after 36 minutes when Hutchinson played the ball back at the far post when the danger seemed to have gone and David Robotham picked Laws out to score. The in-form Wietecha made another great save soon after the re-start and Robotham shot over after 53 minutes when he should have made it 2-0 from Matthew Hale's left wing cross. The ball somehow stayed out at the other end when goalkeeper Danny Potter managed to keep out White's far post header when Dryden reached the byeline down the left. Simon Browne headed wide Anthony Tilley's corner for Weymouth and Invicta were forced to change things around when Andy Larkin limped off the be replaced by Jeff Ross. Dryden's equaliser set up an interesting finale, but Invicta had Wietecha to thank again wen he somehow got down to keep out substitute Gary Funnell's low shot. And there was a real let off for Invicta in the 90th minute when Laws hit his rebound wide with a virtually complete open goal following another save from Wietecha. The game was also notable for a rare booking for Invicta substitute Ross.

WEYMOUTH: Potter, Sullivan, Hale, Cameron (Funnell), Waldock, Cross, Browne, Hutchinson, Robotham (Underhay), Laws, Tilley (Gammon).
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, White, Ponsford, Larkin (Ross), Daniels, Everitt, Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden, McCann. Unused subs: Ayling, Hayes.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0 - 4 HAVANT and WATERLOOVILLE
Folkestone Invicta crashed to their heaviest home defeat for over seven and a half years when they were comprehensively beaten by Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday afternoon. The home side failed to impose themselves on their strong opponents and slumped to their biggest home reverse since Ramsgate helped themselves to a 5-1 win at Cheriton Road back in January 1993. Invicta's downfall was largely their own doing as they gifted their visitors the opening three goals on a miserable afternoon for the home side. The first goal came after 35 minutes when Tim Hambley made no mistake from the penalty spot after a handball by Andy Morris in the Invicta area. It was 2-0 during first half stoppage time when after Invicta had threatened at one end, Peter McCann nodded the ball back to Andy Larkin, but a slip by the Invicta centre half enabled striker James Taylor to race through and score. Things did not get any better after the interval as close to his own goal line in the 59th minute Paul Chambers chested the ball into the path of Havant substitute Dave Wakefield who took full advantage to make it 3-0. Fellow substitute Dean Blake completed the rout in the 90th minute after combining with Taylor. Invicta welcomed back last season's top goalscorer Nicky Dent to the starting line up after his recent achilles injury and the striker shot at goalkeeper Paul Nicholls within a minute. Havant's own high profile marksman Dave Leworthy also forced a save from Invicta goalkeeper Dave Wietecha after just a minute. Chambers intercepted from Paul wood in the 5th minute as the home defence seemed to be strangely out of sorts in the opening exchanges and Wietecha had to race out to thwart Neil Champion in the 12th minute. Taylor shot tamely at Wietecha after a move involving Gary Connolly and Wood on the half hour in what up until then had been a tight game of few clear cut chances. But it all went wrong for Invicta after Morris handled Wood's right wing cross. Invicta's best chance of the first half came after 41 minutes when the stretching James Dryden latched onto a rare stray touch from Havant centre half Gary MacDonald after a big kick from Wietecha. Larkin made some amends for his error which cost Invicta the second goal when he headed away in the 48th minute after Aaron Cook had skipped past Stuart White down the left. Invicta had looked a better side after Jeff Ross replaced Dent at half time and the substitute was involved in a good 54th minute move which resulted in Dryden headed over Morris first time right wing cross. As Invicta chased a consolation goal when 3-0 down Dryden was denied by goalkeeper Nicholls after Billy Manuel had threaded him through. But it could have got worse at the other end as Champion headed over substitute Wakefield's left wing cross in a move started by Hambley and Wietecha did very well to keep out Leworthy's effort when the former Dover Athletic striker was given on-side to Taylor's ball. Manuel picked up another booking for his protests about the first half penalty decision.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, McCann, Larkin, Daniels, White (Everitt), Manuel, Chambers (Ayling), Lawrence, Dent (Ross), Dryden.
HAVANT and WATERLOOVILLE: Nicholls, Connolly, Cook (Wakefield), MacDonald, Gale, Daish, Wood (Blake), Hambley (Jones), Leworthy, Taylor, Champion.

CRAWLEY TOWN 4 - 1 FOLKESTONE INVICTA
A nightmare second half saw Folkestone Invicta crash 4-1 away to Crawley Town on Tuesday night. But the final scoreline certainly does not tell the whole story as both Richard Ponsford and Peter McCann were sent off in another game where the referee's decisions had far too much influence on the outcome of the result. Invicta's vocal travelling army could only look on in disbelief as their side survived a penalty miss, conceded two goals and were reduced to nine men after just 15 minutes of the second half. And all this after a 4th minute goal from James Dryden had given the visitors a first half lead amidst the plush surroundings of the impressive Broadfield Stadium. There was a real sense of occasion about this game played in front of a 832 crowd, Crawley's biggest gate of the season so far. But disgruntled away supporters could only talk about the controversial second half incidents which saw the game degenerate into farce. Trailing at the interval, Crawley made a strong start to the second half and were awarded a penalty in the 47th minute after a foul following a corner, only for Dean Wordsworth to blaze the spot kick high and way over the crossbar. But it was 1-1 after 55 minutes when former Dover Athletic striker Mark Hynes equalised after a move involving Matt Woolf and Wordsworth. Invicta defender Ponsford was then sent off by referee Kettle from Maidenhead for apparently kicking out at Hynes after the goal had gone in. It was a torrid start to the second half for Invicta as dangerous substitute Nigel Brake made it 2-1 in the 59th minute when he turned in Hynes' ball from the right. Billy Manuel was booked for his protests and worse was to follow two minutes later when McCamn was dismissed for a challenge on the edge of the penalty area. It was the third time in the past three seasons that Invicta were forced to finish an away game with just nine men. As the game settled down a little Stuart White was close to equalising at the far post from a quality Andy Morris cross. But the closing stages were cruel on Invicta as Woolf found Hynes down the left flank and his shot deflected in off Morris after 78 minutes. Dave Wietecha was once again in great form in the Invicta goal and did well to keep out Brake's close range effort after 80 minutes. But it was 4-1 in the 87th minute when Danny Carroll increased Crawley's lead after Wordsworth touched the ball back. Wietecha made one last defiant save from Woolf's 90th minute drive and the ball cannoned off the Invicta post deep into stoppage time as the visitors longed for the mercy of the final whistle as the game had been long finished as a contest. It was a hugely unsatisfactory second half after an absorbing opening 45 minutes. Invicta had got off to a dream start when Dryden opened the scoring after McCann had drilled the ball in from the left. Steve Lawrence forced a save in the 7th minute after a move involving White and Dryden and Dryden nearly made it 2-0 after being set up by Lawrence and Billy Manuel. At the other end Wietecha did well to tip over Andy Taylor's 12th minute header, Carroll headed just over in the 17th minute and Wordsworth hit a great 20 yard strike just over after 28 minutes. Referee Kettle added to Invicta's later sense of injustice by merely ticking off Keith Sharman for a heavy challenge on Lawrence as early as the 8th minute. Sharman was booked 12 minutes later for a foul on Paul Chambers. Crawley's Luke Anderson was stretchered off after 42 minutes when he felt the full force of big goalkeeper Wietecha after an aerial challenge. Crawley's Taylor was booked in the 88th minute on a night when the actual football had become something of a side show. Invicta had to be grateful for small mercies in the second half and the only good news was the first appearance of the season from last term's top goalscorer Nicky Dent as a late substitute.

CRAWLEY TOWN: Little, Sharman, Woolf (Vines 88 mins), Taylor, Pullan, Ugbah, Carroll, Anderson (Brake 44 mins), Wordsworth, Hynes, Powell (McAree 82 mins).
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, White (Dent 82 minutes), Manuel (Everitt 84 minutes), Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden (Ayling 82 minutes), McCann.

MOOR GREEN 1 - 2 FOLKESTONE INVICTA
Folkestone Invicta recorded their first away win in the Dr Martens League Premier Division when two first half goals from captain Paul Chambers put them in firm control in the Midlands against previously unbeaten Moor Green. Invicta looked to more than have the measure of their hosts during the first half at the Moorlands as Chambers brought his goals tally to six in five matches and could easily have had his second hat-trick of the season. Invicta opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Chambers headed home Steve Lawrence's right wing cross after a great ball down the flank by Stuart White in a move also involving James Dryden and Andy Morris. It was 2-0 in the 19th minute when Chambers struck again after a good touch from Dryden put him through to increase the lead. The home side sought a lifeline and Dave Wietecha had to touch Jamie Petty's free kick around the post after 20 minutes and Petty was close again in the 31st minute when his little dink was deflected for a corner after a touch from Derek Hall. But Invicta could have put the game beyond Moor Green's reach in the 34th minute when goalkeeper Andy De Bont saved Chambers' rebound after initially keeping out Lawrence's shot when Peter McCann found Dryden down the left flank. Michael Hayde was booked for a 35th minute foul on Dryden as things continued to go Invicta's way in front of a 323 crowd. But Wietecha did very well to keep the ball out at the second attempt in the 38th minute when Petty's deflected shot looked as though it was going to creep in. Moor Green came right back into things after the interval as Wietecha saved twice from top goalscorer Hall within the first ten minutes of the second half. With Scott Daniels winning everything at the back Invicta remained good value for their lead in a game between the two sides promoted as runners up in their respective divisions last season. But it was 2-1 in the 59th minute when Mark Shepherd turned Craig Woldley's right wing cross in at the far post and the goal stood despite the fact that referee Green from Berkeley had already blown for a penalty to the home side following a foul in the middle of the goal. Hayde shot wide for Moor Green in the 62nd minute after a move involving Woodley, Hall and Shepherd as the outcome was now in doubt. But Invicta brought on substitute John Ayling and the teenager caused the home defence all sorts of trouble as he showed just what he can do when the ball is played into his feet. Wietecha tipped over little substitute Craig Pountney's header after Dennis Mulholland's right wing cross in the 67th minute. But Invicta could have increased their lead when Chambers' free kick came back off the post after a 69th minute foul on Billy Manuel. Wietecha was called into action again in the 73rd minute when he saved with his feet to deny Hall after goalkeeper De Bont's big kick forward, but that was to be Moor Green's last real chance. The stretching Ayling put the ball into the side netting in the 80th minute after De Bont had done well to keep Lawrence's header out from Manuel's free kick. And Ayling was well on the way to scoring when he skipped past two defenders before being crudely brought down by centre half Chris Gillard who was lucky to escape with just a yellow card.

MOOR GREEN: De Bont, Mulholland, Brighton, Gillard, Smith, Hayde, Woodley, Baddams (Crawford 71 mins), Hall, Shepherd (Crisp 76 mins), Petty (Pountney 59 mins).
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford (Ayling 62 mins), Larkin, Daniels, White, Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden (Everitt 76 mins), McCann. Unused sub: Dent.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0 - 1 WELLING UNITED
Folkestone Invicta were brought back down to earth on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon when they went down 1-0 at home to a strong and compact Welling side in the Dr Martens League Premier Division. Invicta went into the game in fifth place in the league table but fell to a tremendous 37th minute strike from Tony Dolby which takes unbeaten Welling to the top of the table. After spending the last 14 seasons in the Conference, the Wings came to Cheriton Road with a strong defence and skilful strikers in a game of only a couple of clear cut chances at either end. But the home side could easily have taken something from the game as Welling goalkeeper Glenn Knight made two great saves to deny Neil Cugley's side in front of a 533 crowd.
There were half chances for strikers Steve Lawrence and James Dryden in the opening ten minutes and Richard Ponsford was close with a shot distance on the quarter of an hour mark. The best move of the game came in the 17th minute when Knight did very well to keep out Richard Ponsford's strike from Stuart White's right wing cross in an attack started by Ponsford himself. But the Wings began to get on top as the first half went on and Danny Canoville shot over on the turn after 33 minutes. The visitors scored the all-important goal four minutes later when Dolby let fly from 25 yards after Canoville's cross came back out to him. There was action at either end after 55 minutes as Simon Glover headed at Dave Wietecha from a deep right wing cross for Welling and captain Paul Chambers shot over for Invicta after a run at the other end. Former Welling stalwart White mis-cued at the far post when substitute Jeff Ross' left wing cross fell to him in the 59th minute. Zeke Rowe headed wide from a free kick after Scott Daniels had been booked for bringing down Canoville on the edge of the box in the 62nd minute. Dolby was booked for a foul on Invicta substitute John Ayling in the 75th minute and the home side were close when Ross' shot flew inches wide after Andy Morris' free kick had struck the wall. Knight was in action again in the 82nd minute to keep out an Ayling strike after some trickery from Ross down the left. But the save of the match came in the 86th minute when Wietecha did exceptionally well to keep out Anthony Riviere's point blank header after Rowe's right wing cross. Morris became the game's third booking for a 90th minute foul on Glover as Welling held out to repeat their 1-0 win at Cheriton Road which they had also achieved in the 1999 Kent Senior Cup Final.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford (Ross 45 mins), Larkin, Daniels, White (Everitt 72 mins), Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden (Ayling 63 mins), McCann.
WELLING UNITED: Knight, Taylor, Farley, Hone, Edwards, Dolby, Riviere, Rutherford, Canoville, Rowe, Glover. Unused subs: Harney, Chapman, Conmeally.
28-Aug-00 RM Attendance: 533.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2 - 1 SALISBURY CITY
An 81st minute header from right back Andy Morris gave Folkestone Invicta all three points as they beat Salisbury City 2-1 at Cheriton Road on Saturday afternoon. Morris rose to head home Stuart White's corner to clinch victory after Jimmy Smith had brought Salisbury level in the 69th minute to cancel out Steve Lawrence's opener for the home side. But the major talking point was the controversy surrounding Salisbury's equaliser which stemmed from a goal Invicta had disallowed during the first half when James Dryden's brilliant 33rd minute strike was ruled out for offside. It had appeared that Dryden had given Invicta 2-0 lead, but it was not to be and incensed manager Neil Cugley was sent from his dug out to the stands for his protests to referee Gavin Hoare from Strood. When Smith later volleyed home Salisbury's equaliser the goal was allowed to stand after Hoare had this time over-ruled his linesman who again had his flag up. Invicta had opened the scoring after 26 minutes when Lawrence headed home a White corner. The early chances all fell to Invicta as defender Scott Bartlett just got in before Lawrence to clear Morris' excellent cross as early as the 3rd minute and the sharp Lawrence tested visiting goalkeeper Justin Shuttlewood in the 7th minute. It looked as though it was going to be an afternoon of disallowed goals as apart from Dryden's strike, Salisbury had the ball in the net on three other occasions - twice courtesy of Invicta defenders --only to have their efforts ruled out for offside. But they were to be given the benefit of the doubt for Smith's equaliser. Tyronne Bowers was denied by both Andy Larkin and Morris as Salsibury briefly began to harbour thoughts of winning the game in the 77th minute. But this is exactly the sort of fixture Invicta must win to survive at this level and the home side got the three points they deserved courtesy of Morris' late header.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 4 - 3 CAMBRIDGE CITY
Folkestone Invicta recorded their first ever win in the Dr Martens League Premier Division with a breathtaking 4-3 win over Cambridge City at Cheriton Road on Tuesday night. On an unforgettable night of great tension, skipper Paul Chambers led the way with a hat-trick within the first 23 minutes and striker James Dryden struck in the 32nd minute to leave the home side 4-0 up. But the visitors had already created numerous chances of their own and came back into things with two goals from Kevin Wilkin before half time. Striker Ian Cambridge set up a grandstand finish by making it 4-3 in the 83rd minute.
Invicta got off to a dream start as Chambers converted Stuart White's right wing cross as early as the 2nd minute after a couple of deflections in the Cambridge penalty area. Player-manager Chris Tovey was close with a free kick for Cambridge after a 7th minute foul by Billy Manuel on the dangerous Tesfaye Bramble, while Invicta's own dead ball specialist Richard Ponsford was close with a set piece at the other end three minutes later. Tovey was close again in the 13th minute, but it was 2-0 in the 18th minute when Chambers ran at the Cambridge defence and beat former Dover goalkeeper Martin Davies again after a one-two with Steve Lawrence. Wilkin glanced a header wide with a good chance for Cambridge as more goals looked likely and Dave Wietecha did just enough to keep out Shane Wardley's shot, with right back Andy Morris there to boot the ball away to safety. Incredibly it was 3-0 after 23 minutes when Chambers completed his hat-trick after Dryden had unselfishly squared the ball across to him. Surely it couldn't get any better than this? It did as Dryden smashed home perhaps the goal of the night after a ball from Lawrence to make it 4-0 in the 32nd minute. Wilkin headed home Cambridge's opener after a 34th minute corner and it was Wilkin who made it 4-2 in the 39th minute after the ball had come back off the Invicta post. The game settled down somewhat after the interval, though Lawrence went close with a near post header for Invicta and big centre half John Girling headed narrowly wide for the visitors. With Richard Ponsford temporarily off the field receiving treatment, Cambridge rounded off another good move to make it 4-3 to leave home supporters praying for the final whistle. It eventually came after more than three minutes of nearly unbearable stoppage time to give Neil Cugley's side a first win at this level.
There were bookings for Invicta's Manuel and Morris and for Cambridge's Wardley.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, Daniels, White, Manuel, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden, McCann. Unused subs: Ross, Ayling, Everitt.

BATH CITY 2 - 1 FOLKESTONE INVICTA
Folkestone Invicta's first game in the Dr Martens League Premier Division ended in defeat when Neil Cugley's side went down 2-1 away to Bath City at a sunny Twerton Park on Saturday afternoon despite taking a first half lead. Captain Chambers opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a right footed stirke after John Ayling had played the ball back to him. But Invicta's lead was to last just three minutes as Jimmy Fraser brought Bath level after a good move from the home side involving player-manager Paul Bodin. Teenage centre forward Graham McClean broke Invicta's stubborn resistance to hit a 70th minute winner when the Invicta defence couldn't get the ball away, play was spread out to the left for substitute Scott Walker to cross in to former Bristol Rovers striker Steve White. The final corner count of 12-1 in Bath's favour reflects which was the busier of the two defences, but this was by no means a formality for the home side. Invicta had been dealt a huge blow before the kick off when Nicky Dent injured an achilles tendon during the warm up and had to sit the match out on his return to his native West Country, with his parents and nephew attending the game. But Invicta did have new centre half Scott Daniels and Scottish teenage wing back Peter McCann, the latter on loan from Barnet. The main threat from Bath came from the width provided by quality full backs Mark Code and former Welsh international Bodin. There had been fireworks behind Dave Wierecha's goal to herald the new season before the game, but the visitors more than held their own in the opening exchanges, though Richard Ponsford and Andy Larkin gad to block shots from Fraser and Bodin respectively. The home side almost took the lead in the 19th minute when Wietecha somehow kept out an effort from McClean with an outstanding save. But Invicta were ahead within 60 seconds as Chambers raced to embrace the jubilant travelling army behind the goal. If Invicta could have held the lead for slightly longer then they might well have gone home with at least a point. As it was they had Ponsford to thank for a goal line clearance in the 42nd minute after another Wietecha save following Invicta's only corner of the game at the other end. Mark Harrington's shot flashed past the Invicta post in the 50th minute as the Romans made a purposeful start to the second half as they attacked down the slope. But Invicta defended doggedly in the afternoon sun and might have regained the lead in the 57th minute but Ayling's shot lacked power after Steve Lawrence had battled to head the ball on. Wietecha was Invicta's man of the match and made another superb save to keep out Clode's equally good strike. The home side's pressure finally told as McClean scored on his debut, but Wietecha was still keeping his side in the game as he tipped over brilliantly to deny Harrington after White had touched the ball back. There was to be no way back for Invicta and they finished the game with 10-men as centre half Larkin suffered a head injury during stoppage time. Bath welcomed back striker Graham Colbourne after a lengthy break through injury and the substitute went close to adding a late third goal. By then referee Mike Gooding from Clutton had begun to lose control as Bath's Colbourne and Jon Holloway were involved in skirmishes with Invicta's Chambers and Stuart White.

BATH CITY: Salvatore Babbo, Mark Clode, Paul Bodin, Mark Harrington, Peter Tisdale, Colin Towler (captain), Mike Davis (Scott Walker) Jon Holloway, Graham McClean, Steve White (Graham Colbourne), Jimmy Fraser. Unused sub: Kevin Lloyd.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Dave Wietecha, Andy Morris (Michael Everitt), Richard Ponsford, Andy Larkin, Scott Daniels, Stuart White, Billy Manuel, Paul Chambers (captain), Steve Lawrence, John Ayling, Peter McCann (Jeff Ross). Unused sub: Nicky Dent.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 2 - 0 ASHFORD TOWN
Folkestone Invicta became the first winners of the Sid Burvill Cup with spectacular first half goals from Paul Chambers and Nicky Dent gaving Neil Cugley's side a 2-0 win over Tommy Sampson's new-look Ashford Town side. This was a much sharper Invicta side than had gone down in the midweek Malcolm Welsh Memorial Shield game against Dover Athletic, with Chambers, man of the match Steve Lawrence and goalkeeper Dave Wietecha all catching the eye. Chambers and Dent produced the highlights of the game when they conjured up two special goals that are already early contenders for Invicta's goal of the season. Chambers opened the scoring in the 35th minute when he got the better of centre half Jon Warden, flicked the ball up and fired home with a characteristically virtuoso goal. While fans were comparing that to Paul Gascoigne's Euro 96 effort against Scotland, Dent arguably went one better two minutes later with a 30 yard lob which sailed in between the despairing hands of goalkeeper Alan Williams and the crossbar. Dent's best three goals of last season had all come away from home at Margate, Dover and Spalding, so let's hope there's more to come from him at Cheriton Road this coming season. The home side had made a positive start as Chambers got in behind Warden to head against the crossbar and Chambers was close again after a Lawrence run. New signing Scott Daniels will be a major asset to Invicta at centre half and showed his worth with a saving tackle on Tony Eeles, who caught the former Dover defender. Wietecha had shrugged off his midweek shoulder injury and touched over a Warden header after an Ashford corner, but Invicta were soon 2-0 up as the game turned decisively in their favour. Wietecha made another great save just before half time to keep out an equally good strike from Deal Town's Wembley hero Roly Graham. The big goalkeeper was called into action again after the interval to keep out another Graham shot, while at the other end Williams did well to keep out a Dent header from substitute Jeff Ross' corner and Billy Manuel put the rebound into the side netting. Invicta substitute Jon Neal was close after Dent put him through, but Ashford came close again as Wietecha tipped over from substitute Ian Ross and Eeles shot wide after taking the ball on from Tristan Hodges. Manuel's shot was deflected against the crossbar as Invicta threatened again at the other end. Chambers was soon to collect the trophy from Bernie Burvill, the son of Sid, the Invicta gateman who died earlier this year and in whose memory this game was played. Lawrence collected the Man of the Match award for his first half efforts.

The Folkestone Invicta line up was: Dave Wietecha (Kevin Readings), Andy Morris, Richard Ponsford (Tom Ganley), Andy Larkin, Scott Daniels, Billy Manuel, Michael Everitt, Paul Chambers, Steve Lawrence (Jon Neal), Nicky Dent, Darren Winfield (Jeff Ross).

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 - 3 DOVER ATHLETIC
Dover Athletic retained the Malcolm Welsh Memorial Shield with a comfortable 3-1 victory at Cheriton Road on Wednesday night. The visitors went close within the opening minute as Richard Ponsford had to get across to deny Steve Brown and Michael Everitt soon had to head off the line for Invicta after an inswinging corner. Our problems soon increased when big goalkeeper Dave Wietecha fell awkwardly after a 5th minute collision with Jimmy Strouts and had to receive lengthy treatment. Dover were soon ahead when centre forward Joff Vansittart took full advantage of an error from Stuart White to open the scoring. Our best chance of the first half came on the quarter of an hour mark when the back-from-holiday Nicky Dent was given on-side down the left hand side and blasted over the far post. Wietecha's shoulder injury did not get any better and he was replaced in the 19th minute by Dover reserve custodian Kevin Hudson, who had also played for us in last year's Malcolm Welsh Memorial Shield. But it was 2-0 in the 44th minute when one-time Invicta striker Matt Carruthers was put through and finished first time to find the net. Things got marginally better after the interval as Ponsford moved to centre half, Darren Winfield dropped back to left back and White moved out onto the right flank. But it was still Dover who were creating the better chances as Carruthers shot wide across goal after 65 minutes following a Lee McRobert ball from the left and Strouts's shot was blocked for a corner four minutes later when Neil Le Bihan out him through. Home hopes were briefly raised in the 70th minute when substitute Jeff Ross rounded off a flowing move with some aplomb as he sent the ball into the roof of the net. But Dover soon restored their two-goal advantage as Storuts made it 3-1 in the 76th minute after combining with Vansittart to work his way through the Invicta defence again.
John Ayling, James Dryden and Ian Hayes will still be away for Saturday's Sid Burvill Cup game at home to Ashford Town, with Stuart White also unavailable.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha (Hudson), A. Morris, Ponsford, Larkin, White (Gangley), Manuel, Everitt (Ross), Chambers, Lawrence, Dent (Neal), Winfield.
DOVER ATHLETIC: Hyde, Munday (Brown), Norman, Leberl, Shearer, Strouts, Le Bihan, Carruthers, Vansittart, Brown, McRobert. Unused subs: Beard, Venables, Hogg.

WHITSTABLE TOWN 3 - 3 FOLKESTONE INVICTA
Folkestone Invicta drew their only away pre-season friendly of the summer when a late header from Billy Manuel gave them a share of the spoils as they came back from 2-0 away to Whitstable Town at the Belmont on Saturday afternoon. The Oystermen got off to a flyer as they led 2-0 with two early goals as they prepare for the start of their Bass Brewers Kent League campaign away to Hythe United this coming Saturday under new manager John Roseman. Darren Amos opened the scoring when he slotted home after Invicta goalkeeper Dave Wieteecha somehow let the ball slip back out after a free kick on the edge of the visitors' area. Mo Kadi soon put the ball in at the far post to make it 2-0 after a ball in from the left. Amos shot over with another excellent chance to score and John Gissings shot against the crossbar as Invicta could easily have fallen further behind after Neville Gordon had dispossessed James Dryden with a strong challenge. But Invicta were thrown a lifeline when centre half Richard Ponsford pulled a goal back with a bullet of a free kick after Farrell Cox had run at the Whitstable defence, only to be brought down on the edge of the penalty box. It was a different story after the interval as Invicta began to get on top of their hosts after making changes at half time. Danny Fisk came on for Jon Neal which pushed Michael Everitt into midfield and Steve Lawrence pushed up into attack. Ponsford and Dryden both went close just after half time. But Whitstable could have struck again themselves when Gissings went round substitute goalkeeper Kevin Readings but shot wide from an angle. Everitt made it 2-2 when the teenager took the ball on and hit a sweet low strike into the corner of the net after a pass from the back-from-honeymoon Jeff Ross. It looked as though Whitstable were going to snatch victory when Kadi was put through again to trump home despite looking suspiciously offside. But Manuel's headed equaliser was to save the day despite Billy McCarthy's efforts to clear off the line. A Dryden shot was cleared off the line after a Cox ball and Ponsford was close from another free kick with virtually the last kick of the game.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Dave Wietecha (Kevin Readings), Michael Everitt, Darren Winfield, Richard Ponsford, Paul Morris, Farrell Cox, Billy Manuel, Jon Neal (Danny Fisk), Steve Lawrence, James Dryden, Jeff Ross.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1-2 PORTSMOUTH
On Monday night (July 31st) Invicta went down 2-1 at home to Nationwide League Division One club Portsmouth in an entertaining friendly at Cheriton Road. Pompey won the game with goals either side of half time. Luke Nightingale opened the scoring after 44 minutes and nearly struck again before half time, but big home goalkeeper Dave Wietecha was there to save on the edge of his area. But Joe McNab slotted the ball home to make it 2-0 after 47 minutes. With number eleven Martin Phillips causing Invicta all sorts of problems it looked as though the professionals were going to run away with things. But a brilliant 25 yard finish from Ian Hayes past goalkeeper Chris Tardif made it 2-1 to bring Invicta right back into things after 59 minutes. Tardif had been in goal for Newport (Isle of Wight) when Invicta beat them 2-1 at Cheriton Road back in March. Nightingale poked the ball wide when it seemed easier to score for the visitors and Wietecha denied the Portsmouth centre forward again with another fine save. There were chances at both ends as Paul Chambers' shot flashed across the Portsmouth goal and substitute Invicta goalkeeper Kevin Readings made a good save to deny McNab when Phillips put the ball through. Invicta had a great chance to equalise when centre half Scott Daniels headed wide from Richard Ponsford's free kick and James Dryden was desperately close to an equaliser with the very last kick of the game after combining with Jon Neal.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Wietecha, Morris, Ponsford, Everitt, Daniels, Manuel, Hayes, Chambers, Lawrence, Dryden, Winfield. Subs (all used): Neal, Fisk, Readings.
PORTSMOUTH: Tardif, Crowe, Griffiths, Alford, Hiley, N. McNab, J. McNab, Pettifer, Nightingale, Johnson, Phillips. Sub: White.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 - 1 LEYTON ORIENT
The London side opened the scoring in this friendly with about 15 minutes remaining, but we equalised with the last kick of the game with a penalty from substitute Andy Morris. The down side of the night was an injury to centre half Lee Palmer. Lee injured his knee ligaments and is now a doubt for the start of the season.
FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Dave Wietecha, Deon Newby, Richard Ponsford, Scott Daniels, Lee Palmer, Billy Manuel, Ian Hayes, Paul Chambers, Steve Lawrence, John Neal, John Ayling. Subs (all used): John Ayling, James Dryden, Michael Everitt, Andy Morris, Andy Larkin, Kevin Readings

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 1 - 1 TONBRIDGE ANGELS
An explosive 69th minute equaliser from teenage substitute Darren Winfield gave Folkestone lnvicta a share of the spoils in Tuesday night's friendly at home to fellow Kent side Tonbridge Angels. 18-year-old Winfield let fly from the left flank in only his second substitute appearance for the first team to rescue the Dr. Martens League Premier Division newcomers as his shot sailed over goalkeeper Joe Radford, albeit with the help of a deflection.
Eastern Division visitors Tonbridge had opened the scoring in the 28th minute when striker Roy Godden tapped the hall home after centre half Nick Humphrey had met a deep free kick from the left at the far post. Both sides had chances to win the game as debutant substitute Invicta goalkeeper Kevin Readings did well to touch Gene Clout's shot over the crossbar and fellow Tonbridge substitute Mark Rust hit the crossbar from a tight angle on the left hand side of the Invicta box. At the other end a Richard Ponsford screamer was headed off the line by Clout.
lnvicta had the better of the early exchanges as Australian trialist Simon Arland was twice denied by Radford. Nicky Dent shot wide when Billy Manuel put him clean through down the left and James Dryden cut in from the left to curl another shot at experienced goalkeeper Radford.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Dave Wietecha (Kevin Readings), Andy Morris (lan Hayes), Richard Ponsford. Andy Larkin, Lee Palmer, Billy Manuel, Jason Moore (John Ayling), Paul Chambers (Michael Everitt), Simon Arland, Nicky Dent (John Neal), James Dryden(Darren Winfield).
TONBRIDGE ANGELS: Joe Radford, Danny Tingley, Jon Mayall, Nick Humphrey, Ian Gibbs, Alan Tutton (Gene Clout). Paul Bates (Colin Blewden), Greg Howell, Dave Arter (Michael Morgan). Roy Godden (Mark Rust). Simon Elliot.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA 0 - 0 BARNET
Nationwide Division Three Barnet brought down a full strength team for this first friendly of the new season. There was very little to get excited about with very few shots on goal. Barnet hit the bar twice and Invicta had a little flurry of pressure on the Barnet goal in the closing minutes of the game with the two Johns (Ayling & Neal) causing a few problems to the Barnet defence. All six Invicta subs were used and all of the squad looked fit and well. There are a few weeks to go before the season starts so there is plenty of time to develop the understanding between the players and the sharpness and committant will be there when its needed.

FOLKESTONE INVICTA: Dave Wietcha, Stuart White, Andy Larkin, Lee Palmer, Ian Hayes, Jason Moore, Paul Chambers, Billy Manuel, James Dryden, Nicky Dent, Simon Arland : Subs Andy Morris, Richard Ponsford, Michael Everitt, John Ayling, Joh Neal, Darren Winfield
